@@AleySoundz In terms of latency, it's actually pretty good especially if you connect a USB c cord. I've used it with Clip Studio Paint and it works well. The only real con to it that I've noticed is that you need to use two fingers for most navigation (like scrolling or rotating the canvas in Clip Studio Paint or even in other apps). The apple pencil always works though as a mouse but there's no cursor hovering over your screen which kind of sucks if you're used to using a traditional pen tablet. Overall it's good (using an m1 ipad pro).

Surface Laptop Studio has worked best for me, since I’ve mostly worked in the windows ecosystem, and I have used an iPad with an iMac in an office setting extensively, and being tethered in a cumbersome/inelegant way between a device and a portable drawing display vs the sheer convenience of having it all in one system/one cable makes it a no brainer. There is a huge missed opportunity in not having a pencil/touch enabled MacBook in some sort of 2 in 1 form factor, as even though MacOS is not my preferred OS at this time, I would have probably waited for that hypothetical device (if I thought they would ever do it) as opposed to jumping on the SLS. That being said, ironic that windows followed the nerfed MacBook port selection only for apple to immediately increase their port selection to something pros actually want. But yeah, my current setup is the i7/32gb SLS, with a Huion tablet stand to angle it up slightly in tablet mode for ergonomics, and a tourbox neo for hot keys. Also, there is a series of dongles and hubs to connect other peripherals if I need them. (I never said it was the perfect setup lol, but so far it has been the best for my purposes with fewer compromises, having worked professionally in the past with Wacom displays, iMac/iPad combos with astropad, as well as non display tablets from Wacom and the Surface Pro 5)
@AnalogKensho
@AnalogKensho 2 жыл бұрын
I am very curious to hear why the SLS feels less compromising to you than a desktop/laptop hooked up to a Wacom display - is it just the freedom that comes from not being tethered in place by the Wacom? It would seem to me that desktop + Cintiq would be the ultimate no-compromises solution, whereas an all-in-one like the SLS would compromise screen real estate for some degree of mobility and somewhat reduced price. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts on it as someone who’s used both.
@gormauslander
@gormauslander 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnalogKensho This is the great issue for me right now. It would be far more affordable to get a similarly specced desktop and auxiliary drawing tablet than the SLS. Is it worth paying an extra $1,000+ for portability?
@zephyr6913
@zephyr6913 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnalogKensho Being able to take a full featured workstation anywhere without any additional cables is primarily what I need right now, and these days I find Wacom to be way overpriced and in the past their QC has been pretty crappy. I’d much rather spend less for “good enough”, and honestly Wacom’s mobile devices are just way too overpriced and old hardware, and they are only recently responding to the market competition. Basically my preference is having a solid mobile all in one, that can handle sketching and full paintings, then at some point replacing my current Cintiq (a 10 year old Wacom that right now is having a weird power fault that I might need to open it up to get it working again) with probably the 24” 4k Huion. Basically I spent twice that for something that I can use everywhere and use exclusively for now, and save the desktop upgrade for later, and probably at some point see if I can get the Cintiq working again. But yeah my workflow really needs versatility over anything, and the SLS has a high enough resolution screen to be perfectly suitable for digital illustration. Before this I used a surface pro 5, which did pretty well but was anemic in its performance, and made it purely just a device for drafting, until it slowed down enough that it wasn’t even great for that, since Photoshop likes to get more and more bloated. SLS is a champ, I’ve purposely overburdened it and it still kept up (although it was pumping out a lot of heat and needed to be plugged in). My ideal config would be the form factor and drawing surface of the SLS with the new MacBook Pro Mac chips.
@zephyr6913
@zephyr6913 2 жыл бұрын
@@gormauslander that’s entirely personal preference. If you like taking your work around the house, like in front of the tv on your couch, or outside, then versatility makes more sense. It’s definitely not the best bang for your buck, but you can’t really toss a pen display in your backpack.
@AnalogKensho

@@zephyr6913 thanks for taking the the time to explain, that is very informative! You make a lot of excellent points, and as you point out the simplicity of an all-in-one solution is very tempting. Being a hobbyist, my art needs allow me to do much the same as you describe with an iPad Pro - and I’d probably be content to just keep using the iPad for some time, but there is some home recording gear I’d like to get that is just going to be so much easier to use with full Mac or windows PC. I haven’t used Wacom myself in many years, but I always sort of kept them in the back of my mind as the “gold standard” that I would eventually upgrade to if necessary. Unfortunately, as you point out it does seem like they’ve had a string of engineering and software misses in recent years. I hope that all the competition pushes them to do better, but I have this nagging fear that there may be limitations to what they can accomplish due to their size and the volume of devices they are able to sell.

As great as the M1 chip is I'm honestly only a fan of the iPad when it comes to apple...but the surface products with Windows 11 being more tablet-friendly and Android apps coming, I think I'm more interested in Windows. I'm actually mostly a Linux user but I love tablets for art like the ipad, but I also code on Linux, and now Windows 11 has pretty much full Linux environment support built in with WSLg along with a fantastic drawing experience. I can do everything with one device. It's pretty awesome. Especially for my wallet. The M1 chip is amazing but I'd rather wait and let MS come up with a competitor than just jump ship and switch. I know people love to hate MS but they're doing really great stuff these past few years. (Minus that surface duo thing)

Not an artist but switched after being 27 years Mac only to Surface. Starting with a Pro 2017 to test Windows (really!) and got the Studio 2 later - couldn't believe it when the first Studio was announced that it wasn't from Apple (yeah - owned THE iMac G4 too)... . Never looked back. But: there are some huge stones on the way of switching: E-Mail, Calendar and Contacts. The UWP apps are best described as advertisement for 365. But even more worse: CardDAV Contact groups are handled different. And Windows drag&drop - just don't use it as a Mac user... BTW: Pro 2017 - my Windows test machine - tempted to replace it with a Go as that would be much more portable for me. Hope it will get a better battery runtime in the near future.

Be interesting how well the Studio ages as it is a new product and based on the Duo being a dumpster dive I for one would not be jumping on any first gen MS Surface products? There are some online issues including QC so worth watching. This is not even released in Europe until next year (sometime), probably as we are not so keen to pay the MS premium and by then far better devices with the 12th gen will be incoming. So for me it is not of any interest especially at its steep price which is almost ridiculous and truly for the rich or MS fandom and affiliates!

Good to see the comparison. Nice Job! Have them both and I am pretty sure the screens of them have very similar performance with SDR stuff. They are both 100% srgb, 82% adobe rgb and 77-78% P3. Their brightness in SDR mode are both 500 nits, and both rate 0.20 delta-E. Tested and no visible difference except from resolution in SDR. When doing things like browsing web and Office work, they have very close battery life. I think SLS did 12 hrs with the PCMark 10 test and MBP hit 14. But when it comes to heavy load software ARM starts to totally beat x86.

The issue being versatility: I can pull out my SLS and do surfing on the couch, no cables or peripherals, then do some quick sketches in a full featured professional drawing app, maybe only needing to plug in after a few hours, versus trying to achieve that same setup on the couch with a Mac? Not going to be as slick or as easy as just picking up my SLS, sitting down, pulling the pen out from under the lip, and just working immediately, then instantly switching to browsing or whatever else I want to do, storing the pen very securely on the device at a whim. That being said, the SLS is basically half of my setup, as I wanted to have a full fledged compact mobile drawing setup, and eventually will reinvest in my desktop setup with a full scale (>20”) drawing tablet. I’m a huge fan of redundancy with specialization, so if one goes down I have options to finish what I’m doing on the other platform.

But, I think Microsoft are being far more innovative here. If it wasn't for my iOS-only dev work, I could certainly see myself with a Surface Studio. The real problem is that although Apple hold all the ace cards with chip performance now, their designs have stagnated. Their refusal to allow any form of touch on Macs has really hindered progress. We shouldn't need a highly expensive iPad AND a Macbook Pro to be able to use Procreate and development on the same machine.

In use I haven’t had any issues, it’s bright enough that it overcomes that. If you wanted to see if it works for you, it seems like Best Buy usually has them on display now. That being said, I’ve been used to drawing on reflective surfaces for over a decade, so. Your mileage may vary.

The macbook is well more trust worthy in my opinion. I've had both and there's a reliablity issue I have with Windows where it always needs an update, or a driver or something else when you just want to jot down an idea, or quick sketch... that always got to me and in ways the iPad pro fullfilled since it was ALWAYS ready... I've been on the hunt for a all in one device, the Surface Laptop Studio is getting closer to that but with bettter specs and RUNNING MAC OS!

Keep in mind the iPad only runs a stripped down tablet OS, where as the Surface runs a full desktop OS. There are so many functions not available in the mobile/tablet apps that make it a deal breaker for me, but everyone's use case is different. For me tablets are glorified Netflix devices, other people may be OK with the OS though.

I'm not sure if these are even comparable for artists, one of them you can draw with, the other one you cannot. That's kind of a dealbreaker I think. According to some of the patents, Apple is working on a device like the Surface Studio. Hopefully one day they bring it out. Call it like the "MacBook Artist" or something.

I think you need to compare the surface with iPads, Not MacBooks… I never seen any artists using only MacBooks for art…And Even then, they’ll have a Wacom with them… So, this video is not really a fair comparison. However, my point is that, now apps on iPad are being upgraded to sub-desktop levels… in fact, many apps like procreate and affinity suite are already there. Adobe is still trying to figure it out, but.. Apple allows you to connect your iPad to your MacBook with sidecar, and in a future software update of MacOS Monterey, you’ll get Universal Control. So, you can make your iPad a better external display… And not only that, you said scrolling through videos on Adobe Premiere Pro is kind of choppy, And although, you did admit this is because of premiere, I believe It’s mainly because Premiere is running through Rosetta 2. I think using FCPX for the time-being will fix this issue out for you…

Windows Tablets are poor experiences and I could not recommend them unless you are unwilling to change from default X86 apps that you have used for many years and try something new and better. Though I understand it is sometimes the devil you know? I swapped to macOS and appreciate it and am willing to adapt using native apps and trying different things because Apple Silicon is simply the new future in which others will move to when they catch up in a few years time.

I cant wait to see more laptops for all around visual artists but a possible deal breaker, is I really disslike the gray and black look that typically comes with Macs and prefer white and black or black and white, it's just cleaner looking. I hate the way the magnesium/aluminum exterior feels or the texture and Magnesium is a really soft metal and is likely why it gets those micro scratches. I also hate the really hard sharp edges of Mac like laptops, they hurt my hands. I also really want something like the M1 chip in there but Microsoft. Also, why an old school headphone jack? Might as well go with USB-C as well if there's no old school USBs.

It’s an interesting comparison… I think both are compelling machines, probably not for me. For art I use my refurb 2018 iPad Pro, and that is also my main computer, but for when I need a more traditional computer, for things like Inkscape and updating my website and stuff I use a 13” M1 MacBook which has all the power I need and then some. So I am a Apple ecosystem person… but the pro and the max are way more than I need. The Surface is much cooler than it’s predecessor, which seemed gimmicky. I am interested in the longevity of the Surface though… Sometimes Microsoft is very innovative and daring in the design without factoring in long time use, wear and tear etc. The hinge looks complicated and expensive to repair… Although it does seem to make a super solid use case, I would be interested to know what it is like to live with long term.

If you need a proper gpu for, let's say, 3D modeling, animation, and game development, Macbooks are a huge skip. That being said, the SLS is horribly overpriced. In fact, its $2600 and $3000 versions are $1600 and $2000 (respectively) more expensive than other laptops of similar specifications. And its cheaper versions aren't even worth money - you're ripping yourself off purchasing them. I'm hoping the SLS2 that had its specs leaked is announced at the end of the month, and I'm also hoping it's cheaper than its nonsensicallly overpriced first iteration. I also hope that the SLS2 doesn't throttle itself as draconianly as the SLS just to keep the surface cool. Or preferably, it gives us the option to adjust its thermal throttling in case we're doing heavy tasks. If not, then that 4070 will behave more like a 3070 or 3080 despite considerably driving up the price. Its form-factor makes it the perfect all-in-one device for people like me and most others watching (or at this point, who have watched) this video. But its ludicrous pricing paired with its underperforming specs and heavy throttling + low wattage make it a tough sell. I hope its next iteration fixes those flaws sooner rather than later.

I haven't seen any hands on art review yet on that end and hope you could show us how the M1pro as of today fares for animation artists using the most popular apps from the adobe suite and maybe the M1 beta toonboom storyboard pro or harmony if that's something you're ever using. Both are awesome machines. I do love the creative solutions both are making with their hardware. Apple being energy friendly, silent, and delivers excellent performance even on their entry level M1 machines and Microsoft pushing the conventions of the physical nature of a computer to further ergonomics for workflows. Once cloud gaming improves I could see myself sticking with Mac personally but dang I wish I had another $3k to throw at a Surface Studio Laptop!

I'm a designer as well and I've been a Surface user for many years now. However, unfortunately for me, I had to switch to a Mac now, due to Microsoft not coming out with a pro machine lately. The Surface Studio Laptop is a beauty, but it needs a bigger screen, a higher-resolution (more PPI) screen. Without these two, it's unfortunately useless for me. The Surface Book, with all its fault (especially that U processor which was much too slow), was, nevertheless a product made for professionals. The Studio Laptop is not. It's fancy, it's sexy but it lacks some essentials. The M1 Pro/Max chips on the other hand are definitely a winner for Apple.

I am an incredibly privileged poly-user! Gaming PC with Ryzen and Radeon Crap Windows laptop for work, docked at my desk Mac mini with M1 at my desk, so I always have a Mac there, and to run my audio interface to merge loq-latency audio from itself and whatever other computer I’m using into one set of desk speakers, act as an AirPlay receiver, etc. MacBook Pro 16” with M1 Max MacBook Pro 15” with GeForce graphics from waaaay back iPad Pro with M1. Genuinely, right now, each of these products have their uses for me. I look at the Surface Studio, and I think: well, shouldn’t this one PC replace all four of my computers, and my iPad? But it sits so squarely in the middle that it can’t do anything well! It’s a bad tablet because it’s over 3 lbs and not detachable. It has bad battery life. It is weak as a gaming PC. It has a reflective display. It’s 14” in size, which is too small for me, with my vision impairment. Plus, Windows Magnifier just doesn’t have the magnificent touch and trackpad gesture controls that iPadOS and MacOS system zoom have. The Mac has better speakers and microphones. The Surface doesn’t run MacOS, so it’s trash at live music production and editing. My iPad, and my modern Macs, are both wonderful for that, and my old MacBook runs some software to run my smart lights which, I’ve accepted, really needs to run natively on Windows. As a drawing/math/teaching tablet, the iPad + Apple Pencil is a more highly rated combo than the Surface + Slim Pen 2, even though I like how strongly that pen adheres to the bottom of the laptop. The Surface lacks ports, while the Mac does not. The iPad has 5G, and the Mac can use it as a Sidecar display and tether to its hotspot automatically when I connect them with a Thunderbolt cable, or, in a pinch, all wirelessly! So for me, a bunch of computers will always be better than one, and I will continue to seek computers that do one thing really well, and try to use them for everything, instead of buying one machine I have to then use for everything. But for my friend Tate, who has a 2017 15” MacBook Pro, the Surface could be stellar! I’m trying to push him to get this as an upgrade, to be his only computer apart from his phone. Maybe he can get a Surface dock with a monitor for desktop use. Idk.
