Wet sand is like concrete. A good size breaker can snap your neck like a twig slamming you into the sand. Highlighted reply J Doe 16 hours ago Is it more dangerous to in a way? Like do the waves not push you to the bottom further out?

I’m 60 yrs old and have been surfing for 50,we use to joke skim boarders. You guys have given me a whole new respect for what you do,your really on a different level.I’ll never laugh at skim boarders again,I don’t know how long those finned hard short boards have been around but I wish we would have had them when I was young,I would have definitely owned one.You guys Rip !!

so you surfed everyday or I will give you once a week for 50 years? I don't believe you. You surfed when you were young, then life took over, you worked a job you hated for decades for a family who take you forgranted and hate you. Your wife ended up fucking your eldest daughters boyfriend. Your son loved brazillian boys. Your youngest daughter loved Leon and he loved crack. You are now in a bed sit your wife has everything you worked for for years. She got it by doing absolutely nothing btw. And now you just sit in a drunken stuper infront of a computer remembering the one time you tries surfing and failed miserably.

I telescoped my spine and lay motionless on the sand, unable to move from the neck down for a good 30 seconds, while skimming at this beach (The Wedge, Newport Beach CA). I could open my mouth to scream for help, but I couldn't make any sound come out. I could open my mouth and blink my eyes, aside from that I had no control of my body at all. For those 30 seconds I got myself mentally prepared to spend the rest of my life as a paraplegic. And then I slowly started getting feelings & sensations back, and within a few minutes I was more or less fine. I took my spinal cord right to the point of snapping without actually snapping it. The longest 30 seconds of my life, right where this was filmed, doing the same thing 30 years ago. Why is KZbin showing this to me? Trying to make me feel grateful for my life or something? 😛

Certain breaks and conditions can create one-off events that you'd never believe possible. I was surfing in Pacific Beach area of San Diego one weird day and I was watching the horizon for something surfable I heard a noise BEHIND me and hand to God there was a wave coming towards us. Going the wrong way! Since I happened to be facing the right way I figured what the hell and tried to drop in but it just fell apart as it hit deeper water but was still a trip.

I live six miles from this spot. I learned to surf on the north side of the pier. I surfed here when a large section of the pier broke during a storm and huge sections were floating around. You’d get barreled along with a piece of pier. Just wish it broke year round, not just winter. But been about 20 years since surfing south side.

Years of mountain hang gliding, sometimes in questionable conditions, and this still makes me wonder why. I've been to the Wedge on big days (local So Cal boy) and wonder, as that break consistently closes from the other side and crashes down shallow, in a foot or two of water from pretty high up, what are these folks counting on?
