The 500mb chart is a direct analog to your contour chart example, also the winds are approximately 30-degrees to the pressure gradient instead of tangent to them. (Lows into the center/Highs away from center) Great lecture 👍

Thanks so much Christopher . Before online wave predictions the synoptic chart of course was all we had ..but I had a very good geography teacher...so good one of our course books was written by him...he said once ..."Jones you are obsessed with this surfing thing, which, for this school, is a problem ...but.. it has made you very good at reading a weather chart " but also it was he that was the great teacher.

Hey man, very nice how you talk about shapes of pressure areas. It always confuses me when I try to figure out how one swell affects another. Really useful. What's the web link for the synoptic charts you use? At the moment I use Dutch charts, but they don't include the geostrophic wind scale
