You have to consider cost of living as well in the state you live. California is extremely expensive to live in, so the higher pay may be comparable to the lower wages somewhere else.

So is NYC. It’s just as, if not, more expensive than Cali. So our salary is 50-60K a year.

additional info: this is a young person's career. the extreme toll it takes on your body - legs, back - standing for hours each day every day every week... (while surgeons do their surgeries in 2 days maybe and clinic the rest of the time), and (nurse circulators who sit for 90% of the surgery case, and CRNAs who sit 95% of the case))..this is one of, if not the most difficult physical jobs in healthcare. HR quickly ignores this, btw, when rating jobs ...staffing levels are thin, cases run back to back, breaks you are lucky if you get, lunch is a meager 30mins....stay in shape, wear compression stockings, elevate legs when possible, and you are to be most admired for what you are willing to do! thank you! get serious experience, then sign up to travel, or change employers and demand better working conditions/shift.

You get 30mins?! I don't even get 5 most of the time! haha. Adapt and know how to negotiate pay, that's the key. Get into a spot where they can't live without you and you can ask for what you want. The hospitals are making millions off your hard work, and you can ask for a bigger cut if you are really valued.

@@tokziikk5610 Professionalism is a thing of the past with younger staff. It is unbelievable and to hear the profanity used in the hallways right outside of OR??? People like that are going to go nowhere in life and that 90,000 dream job will elude them. You need to bring the total package to work every day, professionalism, knowledge, skill, class and know how to carry yourself in a professional environment. The OR is a harsh environment and keeping one's cool is cool, not trash talk, jive talk and profanity. Grow up or go work somewhere else. You will be eaten alive otherwise.

Hospitals do pay well but you bust your ass and earn every penny. I worked at a level 1 for twelve years. Being scrubbed for 4-6 hours at a time helping save lives was ok for the first 5 years but starts getting old. Especially, standing on your feet that entire time. Being woken up at 3am to fix some asshole that got shot while he was walking his grandma to church. Or working overnight because someones on vacation and the shift needs to be covered. Worrying about patients making it out of the room alive. I was able to land a great gig that paid almost double working for a private practice with a quarter of the amount of work of working trauma. NO more call, weekends, holidays, or rotations. The experience at the level 1 made me look like an OR superstar, opening up opportunities to negotiate pay. Don't let anyone tell you your best opportunity will be working at a hospital working yourself to death.

The best surgical techs are worth every penny and more. The differences between an average tech and a highly-experienced, meticulous one are substantial. Surgeons will sometimes make specific requests of OR supervisors as to their tech support. Techs should never remain complacent. They should always be trying to improve their own skills. Those efforts are noticed by the people who count, at least they are in major hospitals. In the great medical centers that you've heard of, there is also something of a pecking order. But I guess that's true of all areas. There's a lot of institutional pride.

The other thing to consider when looking at almost every medical career pay average is that so many people have very short lived careers in medicine. While it is a fantastic job it takes a certain person. There are far more people with only 3-4 years experience in the field then 5-10 or more . I don’t mean this as a deterrent or am I saying you will be burnt out in a few years, just that this job weeds people out, it is what it is. Also on the flip side many that do work as a surg tech for three years or so go on to continue their education and become FA’s or many other positions and work under a different job title. So average pays is truly on the lower end of the possibilities when you look online or talk to recent grads. Experienced surg techs are a tighter knit field then you would think. If this is the field you choose work hard and commit and you will make your worth and more importantly doing something you can go to sleep proud of every night knowing you helped someone that could not help them selves.

@Joseph Bananas well, it depends on how much you’re willing to devote to the career, meaning; are you gonna put in the hours? Because in a hospital if you are there around the clock, available. BaleshNTP it's different everywhere because it depends on how many call teams their are (specialty teams), but for the most part you are required to take at least one night during the week, and one weekend a month. Some call teams may be more spread out with less call, others more call time closer together. Just depends on staffing. There are always people willing to give up there call. Not getting enough call if you want it is usually NEVER an issue.

You can make 6 figure in the Northeast, but that's because you need a degree to work at most hospitals here or are pursuing one and Massachusetts is one of only a few states that recognize Surgical technologist and require educational standards for becoming one. 18 months for a non-degree is a lot of time used, but you don't need a degree or specialized training for western states like California and most other states! Most of these state your training is on the job and requires no degree or certification. Medical associations in California have been trying to have laws pass to require this and to make it unlawful for individuals who are not certified as CST to use that title, but it has failed many times! You could have earned a Associates Degree as a Medical Technological in that time!

Arkansas, Nebraska, Nevada, and North Carolina have all passed surgical tech legislation either requirements to be registered with state programs or certified through a national certifying agency. I know Colorado and several other sates already have something in place as well. There are still quite a lot without regulations though. www.aorn.org/about-aorn/aorn-newsroom/health-policy-news/2017-health-policy-news/states-consider-surgical-tech-legislation

@@paulabarnes233 Look into surgeons that have their own private practice and private surgical suite on site within their practice location. There are a lot of private practice surgeons that do surgery at their offices in surgical suites and some surgeons do the majority of their minor surgeries within their practice and with bigger cases they will take their surgical staff to hospitals to do those surgeries. Private practice surgeons usually prefer to take their own crew to assist them in hospitals. But some will use the the hospital staff and only use their personal staff crew at their practice. It all depends though and has different factors that play into it too. Hope that helped answer your question somewhat at least. 🤗

@@paulabarnes233 Welcome. Btw not all private surgeons require certifications because they prefer to train you on how they want and like things and some states don't require you to be certified if you have experience, but I believe most hospitals might require it without working under your private surgeon. So you can gain experience and knowledge that way if you wanted to get a feel for it. Just have to find the right doctors who want to train in office and go from there if that is an option you wanted to explore.

Anyone can make a lot of money if you work a lot of call and overtime but, that's for younger people. In Northern California you can make close to 40.00 per hr. Call here pays you half of your hourly wage while on call and time and a half if called in. You get paid a minimum 4 hours even if called in for an hour long case. It is hard working a lot of overtime though. You will be on your feet all day, sometimes with lead gowns, sometimes in ORs that are warmer than what is comfortable. What I recommend is learning all you can and then building on that skill by learning Sterile Processing and O.R. Materials Management, preference list management and OR Management software programs. If you can bundle these skills you can get into management of those areas and you will make well over a 100,000 without all the overtime and with a lot of perks and benefits. You can go anywhere with those skills, Surgery Center or hospital. I scrubbed for many years before shifting into managment and going full circle. I recommend going that route. It will be a long career and only scrubbing for 40 years is not going to give you the satisfaction that learning new things and taking on larger roles will. Just my opinion.

They now do robotic prostatectomy procedures in surgery centers and total joints. Personally I think both hospitals and SC's offer great experience but once you get your experience that call life and trauma is for the birds. It's a good option to keep a per-diem position at a couple hospitals and work full-time at a SC.

@discorperted You are simply wrong. I'm a boomer and when I started as a scrub tech, I made 3.23/hr. Tell me how that was economic growth? My pensions were based on such low wages. Now, 401ks are matched based on much higher salaries. Sure home prices are higher but, entry wages are almost 10 times what I made starting out. And there are good benefits and pensions and 401ks. Where in the world do you live? Maybe if you get out of the boonies, you'll know these things. You seem so cynical for someone so young, which, in itself, is your problem. Opportunities for higher salaries are much greater these days...you just need to educate yourself.
