@@therightcar Maybe. But to be honest what I experience with our (new) Triton and an outback caravan seems to be totally at odds with some of your experiences. There are modifications that can assist. But I also wish towing reviewers would look at towing capability beyond how a vehicle performs (more or less) in a straight line with a caravan on behind. For example, because drawbar downloads are related to tow ball distance from the axle, manoeuvrability into or around restricted/tight spaces can be limited and the risk of jack knife/bumper damage is increased due to the close tow ball proximity. You can't just buy another tongue that has a longer shaft as manufacturers won't certify them or confirm that there is no impact on vehicle warranty. I think it is too easy for reviewers spend time on things that are subjective and which people can see for themselves, while missing out on some important stuff that can really help. I wouldn't even be opposed to becoming just another a D-Max convert or Ranger groupie but I don't think they are much better in this area. And maybe manufacturers could offer packages with different ratings and consequential dimensions. I would be quite happy with a three tonne option as personally I doubt I would ever want to tow a 3.5 tonne trailer with a Ute that only weighs 2 tonnes.

I hear you, but the vehicle is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes, I towed 3.1 tonnes, and that leaves room for a person to interpret how they might set it up and consider their payload / GVM and GCM. I'm not going to set up a vehicle with a family's worth of stuff, because it's just not possible, and every person has a different setup.
@bretthampson89916 ай бұрын
@@therightcar mate, I disagree - I've towed all my life sine I was 17, (now 64) and you can't seriously do it properly with a stock vehicle, did you modify it to make the trailer brakes work (yes), it's the same with the suspension, and the problem is the rating doesn't actually mean it should be done, this is a major problem with the industry (IMO), and creates more problems out there with the consumers who have no idea, I would seriously suggest you get the same vehicle and do the mods, show what needs to be done to do it properly. I have an NP300 (2023) we just bought a used Golf 650 Tourer caravan, because it was under 2.4T tare and under 3T loaded. We know what even though the vehicle is rated to 3.5T it's not really capable to do the job. there is no way I would tow any Max rating, of any stock vehicle, We have towed he van on its first trip from Brisbane to Lennox Head for a shakedown run (still stock suspension), it sagged 45mm and I will now look at airbags to solve that issue, Towball download is 160kg, people load 250kg, ancillary load 120kg, total load 530kg, + fuel (well within spec) The car towed the van well with a total fuel consumption of 13.3 L/100k over 470K (371 actually towing) the rest running around the area sightseeing). Once I do the airbags it will be spot on for the job. If people who tow aren't taking into consideration all the things I have mentioned above they shouldn't be towing, (IMO) that why we have so many caravan incident's out there, People who know need to be part of the solution, In the first shot of the set-up I could tell the ute was not set-up properly in the rear suspension, did you measure the sag, You have the perfect opportunity to do a follow-up video of how to improve the car to do the job properly, All the 4x4 dual cabs on the market need s mods to tow correctly, You say your site is all about the "rightcar" how about going the extra mile & show people how to do it right. There are plenty of people in the industry that will help you do the article because they are interested in safe towing, I'm sure you have the contacts anyway, Best Regards,

We have a 2019 MR Triton and tow a Jayco Eagle Outback. Our thoughts were that Triton's shouldn't be towing heavy vans/ trailers even though they might be able to technically. The Jayco weighs 1.6 fully loaded and tows really well. Fuel consumption is around 15 litres per hundred kilometres on the worst of days e.g. strong head or side wind but averages around 13, and the Triton tows it with relative ease. The twin turbo would definitely help but keeping ours for a while yet. I agree with the idea that you shouldn't tow anything heavier than the tow vehicle. It just makes sense. Generally, we are very happy with our Triton. 4 years in and no problems at all.

What about towball distance from the back bumper and the resultant turning circle when towing something with a wide draw bar as this. Interesting test. I have just towed a 3000 Kg van from Perth to Queensland with a 2019 Triton GLX+ 6 speed manual. Tow Ball Mass was 256Kg and although the lack of power was evident on some sections of the trip, I was happy with the job it did. In the picture at the end the Triton appeared to be sitting very low at the rear compared to mine. I also had 900Kg of payload which made the front axle weight a little light than preferred but manageable. I would like to know the Tow Ball Mass from the van you towed and the weight distribution on both axles. My van was 60Kg more on the front axle than rear of the van which gave a good spread of weight overall. I bounced around on some very dodgy roads along the way but overall I was pleasantly surprised with my old Tritons performance. I would like to upgrade to an Amarok when I get back to Perth if my budget allows.

I have two purpose built tow tugs, v6 and v8 diesels, both with all the needed towing mods, suspension, brake, engine upgrades, etc. V6 is merc auto and V8 a Toyota manual. V8 has almost double the torque of the V6 but V6 is my preferred tow tug for blacktop and made gravel roads, auto is best for ease of towing. V8 is built to tow/tour the outback and when i do that i drop the torque/tune back to around 750nm, which is more than enough. My van tops out at 3t, which places me safely within both vehicle GVM/GCM limits. I never tow above 100kmph but obviously/safely exceed that when overtaking slower traffic.

Are you going to do a towing review of the petrol version of the VW Amarok Aventura TSI452?

Would have been good to have the Triton loaded as it would if you were off on a holiday.

Hey mate, how big, long, heavy is the caravan you're towing?
@therightcar6 ай бұрын
Big. Long. Heavy. 😂 It’s 8.3m total length, 2.5m tall, and 3.1 tonnes

This surly is a great advert for buyers of big caravans towing with a vehicle which is not suited to a Ute , brilliant video though.

Agree, people love and fall for the hype of 3.5t towing capacity when in reality I personally would never tow more than 2.5t (up to a maximum of 2.7t) with any mainstream dual cab ute. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there towing with weights closer to maximum figures without issues and possibly have GVM upgrades as well to go with it but it just doesn’t make sense to me to have something pushed to its maximum and not have a safety margin.

A pity you couldn't replicate wet weather towing. My Ranger is one scary beast in the wet... My employee's Triton feels a hell of a lot better

Tows awesome in the wet. Super select means 4wd full time

van is close to level ... Ute is pointing up to the sky . Handling and braking will be compromised . Towing 101 basics.. Ute has to remain level. Correcting to level will change the feeling enormously . Amazing it towed this van poorly . Ball weight ?? Van weight ?? Most utes are confident with 2Ton trailer . Only a few tow well around 2.5T
@therightcar4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the maths lesson. Doesn’t matter about that - a customer should be confident when they are buying a ute that is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes that it can do the job. This was a disappointing experience.
@paulthompson16544 ай бұрын
Reality is ,,look into what kg limit the factory recommends load levelling bars . Often at this point in my previous utes if u stay under/around this limit all is golden . Eg 3T Max limit ute had a levelling bar requirement at 1.8 T .Sensible load of approx 2T handling or braking was not compromised at all . Instal a leaf spring helper to maintain ute level ride vehicle drives as if was not towing at all .

Yes.

Pity you couldn't fit towing mirrors, drivers like you are what gives caravaners a bad name, unless the mirror to mirror is 2500mm! Truck looks good, shame you did not fit extra mirrors!

I think you make presumptions about “drivers like me”. I could see. I drove safely. I didn’t cut anyone off. Don’t presume.

Is dmax 3.0 better for towing?
@therightcar6 ай бұрын
Yep, I would choose it over this for towing this much weight.
@ianmirfield54856 ай бұрын
We all know that utes of that weight and power shouldn’t be towing anything heavier than the tow vehicle. Whether it be an Amarok , Ford or whatever ! Even if it has more power, you are only putting the occupants at risk. Don’t be foolish do your homework. An innapropriate test. Good luck finding a suitable van weight to match the power and the engineered capability of the vehicle of choice or modify accordingly. Happy towing

If this is “inappropriate”, you must be disgusted by the THOUSANDS of families with utes just like this towing vans just like this. I base myself in reality.

I imagine it will find its happy place with 2 tonne on the back. I know this is a big van, but that’s indicative of what people tow.

@therightcarАй бұрын
I’m not sponsored by anyone. I am an expert at new vehicle reviews and it’s the best new ute on the market by a stretch.
@mps9649Ай бұрын
@therightcar Guess you are saying Ford is the best new ute by a stretch - based on what metrics? It's a more powerful engine and looks great but Ford has dogshit reliability and the company is well known for not giving 2 shits about their customers. Based on the whole package I'd rather pick a Triton any and live with a slightly less powerful car but have peace of mind that it's great for the wallet and if shit goes wrong Mitsubishi has me covered. And i speak from experience having owned a Ranger.

Regardless of this review, It's incredibly hilarious there's always chest beating about stock suspension "not being up to the task" because they sag or for XYZ reason with a big load. I mean let's all agree every manufacturer has a similar issue, some more than others? The very same people that carry on about this and make it the biggest deal and rubbish a car about suspension, are the same people that upgrade the suspension anyway on the car they end up with 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏽♂️

For a Ute that Mitsubishi advertised that they were investing so much into making this the best Triton ever, everything I have read and seen reviewed shows that it fall short in every measurable sector. I have an old Pajero (2012) and I love towing with that (2100kg) and I was looking forward to the New Triton but I definitely won’t be buying one. It definitely seems that Mitsubishi is suffering the Stalantis curse of producing average 💩, only thing decent left in the Stalantis group is the Patrol and it will be interesting to see what the new Patrol delivers.
