For those saying this was a waste, anything I’m sure is helpful. Would they have loved someone taking care of their whole house, of course, but $1000 will still help more than it hurts. Remember to be humble and thankful when a gift is given. If you have no expectations, you’ll have no disappointments.

Somebody call East Idaho News!!! They could so much better than $1000 after their house burned down! If somebody knows of a GoFundMe or something, I'd love to know. We don't have much ourselves but our Police officers deserve more than that! This was a HUGE let down to see them offer so little.

I experienced a house fire in 2005. I left with nothing. I stayed with my sister the first night. The second night, I was driving up and down the Boulevard trying to figure out where I was going to stay. My insurance hadn't really made contact with me yet. I'll admit, the $1,000 they gave does seem like a tiny amount, especially for a sheriff who puts his life on the line everyday, it does seem lacking, but for me, the $1,000 would have been so welcomed. I had to buy things like clothes, pans, a hot plate, dishes, blankets, etc, to use over the next 3 months until I got back into my home.

Seriously?! That’s all. In Las Vegas the community came together to make over a house for a family of ten, in addition to giving them a years worth of food. The son who was moving out for college got $1,500.

Oddly enough, I lost my house and every single thing I owned... a few weeks before that, in that city... when it was burglarized while I was out of town for a funeral. Even my cars were gone. I had nothing. But since it was done by the person trusted to feed my cat, I at least had a lead. But the Baldwin county sheriffs couldn’t even be bothered to come file the report until weeks later. Oh... but I did get 3 citations for the mess the thieves left totaling $3k, and an eviction notice those sheriffs had no issues enforcing during the Covid lockdown. Thankfully I found a lot of my stuff for sale on ebay. Yay! Oh wait, no.... I never got it because I couldn’t afford to buy it on eBay to find out the address, and 30+ calls, and the same number of emails all went unanswered. They didn’t even show up for the camera footage. And haven’t been able to file renters insurance because they won’t take the time to even log in in my stolen inventory. Weeks later I’m dumpster diving for food(legit homeless) and a Sherrif pulls up, handcuffs me, and charges me with “attempted burglary of a non-residence”. And I spend the next 6 months in jail. I say he’s lucky to even get a gift bag. It’s better than HED do for someone else.
