If going to see lotus buds, you should go early in the morning, it's very beautiful because the lotus flowers are in full bloom everywhere. Isaan Province was a U.S. military base during the Vietnam War. Udon Province used to be the base before. Today, the traces still exist.

We NEED to go back again - during the winter and very early so we can see as many lotus flowers as possible 😍😍
I commented on your Pha Son Kaew clip that I travelled from Isan to Phitsanulok a million time and it was a nostalgic trip for me. Now you brought me back to my home town !! :) This is awesome :) FYI Udon Thani in the 60s was a tiny town but it was upgraded to what it is today after the US set up an Air Force base there during Vietnam War. The long straight grid roads, roundabouts, town zoning that segregates government office areas from commercial areas, and congregations of many schools and colleges on the same road are the legacy of American town planning of the 70s. Thus, Udon Thani's township shares more similarities with towns in Western USA, than other Thai towns in Isan :)

Thank you so much for sharing those references... my hubby and I are also in Thailand now and checking what places to visit... right now we are in Koh Phangan. We would love to see the Victoria Lilys that grow huge leafs on the lakes... not sure if there is a very special spot where they grow here in Thailand, but I'll do further research... if you have any additional suggestions, feel free to share 😉🙏 ขอบคุณมาก!! 💖

Awesome! Udonthani has strong urbanization vibe in downtown so many people from Bangkok feel familiar easily, many good cafes and restaurants, and good Som Tam (Papaya salad)!. Of course, best time to see red lotus must be in winter. Sorry you missed the red lotus, but instead you've seen birds and buffaloes! Actually there's a city museum near the public park where you can visit. It's colonial style building of warm golden color and you can learn how the city has developed from a small community to one of biggest provinces in northeast. You can find some good restaurants nearby the public park. If you come during weekend, there will be walking street market near the public park also!

We definitely need to come back again to see the red lotuses 😍 but it was still so nice!! I think we drove past that museum actually!! The yellow/gold building is very memorable ❤️

Hi the couple! Udorn used to be one of the American air bases during Vietnam war back in 60s- 70s. I used to work in the base for many years as an aircraft mechanic. I'd invite you to walk around the town to see what it looked like in the past. Many American GI's lived both inside and outside the airbase. You will see many sites of the past. I,too, will go to Udorn at the end of this year to see my past. The lake you see is different from that of the past in that it has been renovated.

The highlight of the Northeastern region may not be a matter of tourist attractions. But the interest lies in the traditional way of life. and local traditions (must check the event program) such as - Tradition of Lent Candles Ubon Ratchathani Province - Lai Reur Fai Festival (Illuminated Boat Procession) Nakhon Phanom Province - Phi Ta Khon Festival, Loei Province - Pong Lang Festival Kalasin Province Tourists must participate in activities. Interacting with local people To be able to touch welcoming visitors which is the true charm of the Northeast ❤
