However, they still need to know how to clean their own room without their mom or anyone else's help as well as they need to be helping out with chores, otherwise you're doing them a disservice, making them feel like everyone is always going to do things for them. They should've been learning that since they were 10 or earlier not that you're doing their laundry and cooking, cleaning and paying for everything at mid to late teens.

Exactly, if they aren't taught life skills and basic adult responsibilities while growing up.....when will they? Those are the kids who end up failing at life. I'm not saying kick them out at 18, but if they don't have any mh concerns there's no reason to be cleaning their room for them constantly. Do I occasionally go and tidy up a bedroom, yes, and my kids learn gratitude. I've got 5 kids, the oldest will be 23 in a few months. He went to college and lived home at first then a dorm. College was not for him and he changed paths after consulting with local resources. He worked ft and saved enough for a 3bdr home to share with his HS best friend. He's saved over 30k in 3yrs, he learned how to manage his money, his house is more spotless than mine lol and he's thriving. His almost 21yr old sister lives in an offcampus apartment near her University. She was ahead of the curve so she will graduate a year earlier than her peers. She holds a pt job, uses grants to help after tuition is paid and the apartment is cheaper than the campus dorms. She has a nest egg of 15k. It can be done. And it's not cruel....her first year the job she got treated her like garbage, and I told her that if it caused her that much distress then it was not worth it. She took a small break for 2mths not working and was good to go finding another better job just fine. Now my middle kid turns 18 this month. His dad and I are at our wits end. He's been disrespectful and rude...and we gave him space because he was struggling w a personal issue. But now its become a huge problem because he believes he's owed things. I would never kick him out or turn him away, but rules are getting stricter and he will need to show improvement to have them lifted. He's not happy, but I'm not happy to send a young adult into the world who cannot even be responsible for small things. We'll work on it. Nothing is ever perfect and no 1 way works for everyone. All I ask is they give it their best.

I remember when the same thing happened to me as a teenager, when I was going through depression then as well. It was honestly traumatic for me, because my parents threw out a bunch of stuff that was important to me. I remember they threw out a letter my friend had written me, that was on my side table that I knew where it was. It was a friend of mine who passed away about a year after they through everything out of my room, I would appreciated to still have that letter. It does sound like you cleaned it + had expectations that you just decided on, all by yourself. Perhaps before cleaning it, you could have discussed expectations with them? If they let it get that bad, it is kind that you cleaned it, I'm not saying that. As an adult who struggles with mental illness, when I let a room get quite bad, I feel like cleaning it is nearly an insurmountable task and it's so overwhelming to me, so getting help in that situation is always something I am so so grateful for, but those who have been kind enough to help me, haven't also then been upset or disappointed at me if it gets bad again. I'd just recommend not doing thoughtful acts with some kind of unrealistic expectation that you have come to by yourself. Just do the kind act because it feels good to help your loved ones and they appreciate the help, yknow? What happens beyond that is out of your hands.

Just a reminder: having difficulties with cleaning your livingn spaces and yourself is a widely known sign of mental illness, depression and just stress. I have been diagnosed with depression amongst some other things (mind you I had to lie and say its not as bad as it is because of abusive adults in my life) and my room is a hoarders wet dream. I started to pick up on the hoarding myself as another symptom of abuse after having to live with one my whole life. I'm also the caretaker to that person, who is also disabled. My family has been on the brink of homelessness for years. Having crippling depression (in my case suicidal ideation before the age of 9 till today) and chronic stress makes is very hard for me to do basic tasks. But when I do want to do them, you can't be snarky at me for finally doing them because that will just put the loop back on. Yes, I haven't brushed my teeth as often as I should have this week, but to me it's a choice of A) brushing my teeth and B) going to school. Obviously I will pick B because that way I can get out from the abuse. Also the teen shares the room, so I would guess the younger brother contributes plenty to that mess. No need to go full on hating on the teen, when they aren't the only contributor.

Same. But I had to clean the moment I was able to pick up a toy and walk to put it away. My mom would throw everything in the trash that “wasn’t in its rightful place”. I’ll never forget once she found ONE PUZZLE PIECE🧩 on the floor and dumped out every single puzzle we owned on the floor (1000 piece puzzles each box X 7 or 8 boxes) and told us to put them all together and figure out what puzzle that ONE PIECE went to. ???!! She ended up throwing all the puzzles away. Me and my brother were 6 and 5 years old. Now that I’m a parent I realize how absolutely insane my mother was and how much she expected from us at such little ages. My daughter will NEVER ✋🏻 and if she ever needs help or feels overwhelmed from a mess I will help her, and show her that it’s okay to be messy sometimes but it’s normal to clean after yourself. My anxiety started at such a young age from hearing “it better be done in 3 hours or else you’re getting beat”. Cause that’s the way to show a child how to clean 🤡 if you’re reading this and do this to your child- please don’t. That’s terrible parenting and causes more harm in your child than good- for the rest of their life. Anxiety is awful to deal with at such a young age.

I wish some of you would get some basic common sense.... How is she sweet or compassionate? She had the space for him to have his own room, but CHOSE not to let him, even after his best friend died.... she said she knows that he's depressed and her solution is to invade his minimal privacy to clean his room instead of getting him a therapist...how is that caring at all? She forced the boys to share a room after that incident instead of allowing the eldest space and privacy to grieve his loss.... which could very well be detrimental to the mental health of BOTH boys. The eldest has to try and set a good example for the youngest while also trying to keep his mental health afloat with no help. And the youngest is constantly immersed in the life of a depressed person - not knowing that those habits aren't normal.

I'm not talking about the fact I was evicted! I mean having a lock and alarm outside my room, among a lot of other things! I'm not selfish but I will not ever live near people who make me hate myself and are the main cause for my trust issues! Sorry went off topic... I'm so happy that you gave your oldest son his own space! Edit: I was the oldest of my father from a relationship that was incredibly toxic! He hates my mother so much that he caused me pain to watch her suffer! My father is extremely toxic and selfish and what's worse is he's unaware of that fact and thinks he's so great! I had ADHD and a sever eating disorder and instead of getting me help he put me in foster care until I hit high school! To which I then became the live in maid so to speak. The day I was old enough to get a job, I was told to start paying bills or else. I was 15... I worked 2 jobs and was still getting good grades. Everything went south my senior year when I had to get a 3rd job to pay my own bills. I had car insurance and a phone bill. I still graduated with several scholarships that I couldn't use because my father spent my tuition money I saved up for his wife's daughters braces... I personally don't think I turned out horrible except for my trust issues and crippling depression but I have amazing people in my life now and 3 kids of my own that I would burn the world for! You are absolutely right about the need to continue to help your kids beyond 18, and really, way beyond that! It was my dream to get my kids through college without owing anything, and we did it! Today’s young adults face things that are harder than we had it, economically. Back in the 1950s, when my parents got married and graduated from college they were able to get a good job and live on one salary and buy a house. Today’s young adults graduate from college owing about $50k plus and that’s just from a bachelor’s degree! Fortunately, lots of kids are getting smart and doing a two year community college degree which in our state means automatic admit to a state university depending on your grades. So our daughters made it through that and saved a lot of money. There are online and part time college programs that save money and still give you the credentials you need. Be smart-look for alternatives!

If my mom went into my room as a teenager I would've felt SOOOOOO violated.. nevermind posting it on the internet. I'm in my 30s and she knocks and just cracks it open to talk to me, she hasn't been IN my room without an invite in years because she knows how much my privacy is important to me...
@Jade-gi1vp2 жыл бұрын
YES! but also, this family likely has a different relationship with each other and privacy. Not to mention it isn't his room yet, it's his and his brother's

Why u still with ur parents at 30?
@ryleekelly44792 жыл бұрын
@@hawihawi9260 extenuating circumstances happen. I don't think people plan to move back in with their parents after they've moved out. My sister got divorced and retired from the army and moved back in with us, she just graduated from surgical tech school and works fulltime as a OB certified surgical tech, and is searching for a home to buy. shit happens. don't shit on other people bc you think it won't happen to you.

That's why moms need to make it a every once in while thing, early on, so that the child doesn't feel like its an intrusion and they know it can be searched...that's how you know as a parent, what the child is into, which is every parents job...I would pick up my daughter's rooms once in a while. They never had a problem with it...and they both came out OK. And yes sometimes I would find questionable things, but we would talk about it, yell about it...and we moved on. Its a parents job.
@nathaliebazinga2 жыл бұрын
A pointer. Make sure your child is fine with you just going through their stuff. It's a big breach of privacy regardless of how old they are and whether it's your house or not. I hated this always. I hated people going through my stuff even though I am not hiding anything, just because I have a special place for every single thing and once it's moved It gets extremely frustrating. I will never forgive my mum for goijg through my stuff when I was in college trying to "reorganize my wardrobe". Since then I wasn't able to find some of my clothes, they just vanished... And the essential ones... It really makes me furious to this day. Order is very important to some no matter how much you think their room is cluttered or not.
@charliehue2 жыл бұрын
NEVER forgive her? 😅 Isn't that too shallow reason for you to NEVER forgive your mom, and still gets FURIOUS up to this day? Apologies but it's just really so surprising.. Those words you used are just too heavy as a reaction to merely "organizing your wardrobe".
@nathaliebazinga2 жыл бұрын
@@charliehue let's not play semantics, you know what I meant...I don't have to love every single thing she does in order to love her as a person. You also have to set boundaries in life and you're allowed to have your own thoughts, feelings and pet peeves. Basic human privacy though is such a crucial thing that I don't understand how you don't understand it. I guess you're also one of those nosey people that have the audacity to pick apart every single thing someone says in order to manipulate a conversation to make themselves look holier than thou, or think you have a right to snoop through people's things, ey? :) I can tell you now, no matter how mad you think it is, many people do HATE IT and find it incredibly annoying and disrespectful when you go through their stuff without asking, for whatever reason...I am otherwise the easiest person to live with. Have lived with a huge family, roommates, now fiance...no issues...we set boundaries and we work like a well oiled up machine. I don't appreciate though when someone, on purpose, displaces my things without asking. If they ask, I will give them anything and everything. If they don't, I will never forgive them nor forget their acts of disrespect. I don't bring it up in a general conversation with them anymore, but I do tend to lose trust in them and become highly suspicious of what their character is like. I think I am as clear as a day. I like to have control over my things and I know where all of my things are. When something is lost it's not because I misplaced it, it's because someone else touched it. I've almost never lost anything in my life. and I pay great attention to my things because they are all meaningful. If someone just came and rearranged my room without asking I would probably just move out immediately. It's such a disrespectful thing to do.

Love this post. Training children to become future adults is not abusive. Sweeping, mopping, laundry, doing the dishes, etc., is preparation for their independent lives. No one is going to live life for our children. It does not mean we don't love them just like this woman. It means we're raising them to go into the world and make a good life for themselves.
@kidzrrelevant25932 жыл бұрын
@@peacefaith560 This younger generation is already the "gimme" generation. In our hearts as parents, we want to keep them but we cannot and we should not. They deserve to move on and give life a go for themselves.
