I knew my great grandmother when I was a child, too. She died when I was 16 and her funeral (morning) was on the same day as my English O-Level exam (afternoon). I thought that walking into the exam in tears would result failure, but the essay question was something like 'Describe someone who inspired you?'. The essay almost wrote itself. I still hold her responsible for that exam pass.

I'm actually from Merseyside myself but I now live in Kent. Being connected to Merseyside, in particular Liverpool makes you part Scouser. That means you have connections to the place that gave the world The Beatles. How ya doin' cousin? Liverpool's a pretty cool city btw. When the plague relaxes, you should take a trip and check it out. I went back there for a visit about 6 years ago and it has a really good vibe.

I have been able to confirm my heritage from family info, DNA and ancestry websites. I have made it a mission to visit EVERY country and most of the towns/cities of my ancestors. Mission mostly accomplished!

I visited Canada a couple of years ago, doing a whistle-stop tour of the eastern hot spots, like Quebec, Montreal, Toronto and Niagara from the Canadian point of view. Whilst there I saw some Canadian people, and was very impressed. One of them told me to think of Canadians as quiet, considerate people cursed with noisy next door neighbours. I loved the analogy. I very much liked La Cochon Dingue restaurant in Quebec, especially our waitress whose name was Genevieve. You probably know her. Sadly I missed out on a visit to see somebody called Tim Horton. I have to commend the Quebecois/e on their kind ability to comprehend my schoolboy French. A lot of French people in France think that rather than talking to them in their native tongue I'm having a spastic fit, so bless you lovely, generous Canadians for indulging me. I went up that CN Tower that overlooks a big duck pond. The little bit right at the top of the tower was pretty scary, as was the glass floor bit. Canadians are very brave. I like how the Canadian people still have a residual Irish accent, saying "aboot" etc, and in that vein I must give a mention to the tremendous Trailer Perk Boys, my favourite imported comedy programme by miles. The ability Canadians have for self-parody is totally wonderful, and so similar to us British. I noticed that to make me feel at home, all the men in Canada wear those checkered, insulated lumberjack shirts, just like I do. Finally, Canada hosted the single best murderer interrogation ever, which I'm sure you have seen on KZbin, when a chappie called Russell "Call Me Russ" Williams got out-manouvred by a perky little detective live on telly, or something. I can watch that again and again without it getting old. Anyway, I must leave you to get on with your breakfast. Have a wonderful furlough Alanna. From Mike, Mudeford, Dorset.

Alanna's ancestry combination reminds me of Audrey Hepburn. I read a book called "Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II" by Robert Matzen about her childhood in England and the Netherlands, and it was sad, yet fascinating. I would highly recommend it!

I did an ancestry DNA test a few years ago, it came back as an high% English, Southern and NE, lower % of Norman French, Scandinavian, Germanic and Celtic. All of the People's who have invaded or lived in Britain over the centuries. No Roman as contact and relations, other than government, with the native population was forbidden, the penalty was death for both parties involved. The Cornish have an high Iberian % due to their trade, mainly fish, with Spain and Portugal over centuries. Welcome home Alanna.

@wendy kelly It wasn't just the EU that linked us to Europe, it's in most of us. The Royal Family is Germanic back to George I, the family name was only changed to Windsor during WW1 by George V, and recently changed to a part German one, Mountbatten-Windsor (Battenberg was Phillip's family name Anglicised by his uncle Viscount Louis Mountbatten, a direct descendant of a daughter of Queen Victoria)

Fellow Canadian here haha I haven't yet done my own 23 & Me/Ancestry heritage thing but I've looked into my family tree many times over the years. I'm born and raised in Montreal, Canada, speaking mainly English. My mothers side is primarily French from Quebec and my fathers is from Ontario. I also have 2 great-grandparents that came from Aberdeen in the 20s, 2 great-grandparents from England (no idea where yet unfotunately lol), 1 great-grandmother from Wales and then the other 3 great-grandparents are French Canadian with lineage going back to Normandy in France. Really cool to see that you have family from more or less the same places. Keep up the great work !:)

Yay so exciting!! That's a huge percentage too! I did mine through Ancestry and then ran my DNA through MyHeritage and I'm 50% English. Apparently I have a lot of living distant relatives in Canada too, including the UK. Tis a small world!

I was once listening to an interview with a geneticist who was talking about these kinds of tests. According to her the accuracy depends upon the sample size and variation of others who have had their ancestry checked. It can also depend upon where you go to get your results from as different companies may have a different database and these percentages are based upon that, therefore you could get different results if you sent another sample to a different company.

But in her case they clearly got a lot of it correct. In fact in quite some detail as well. The Aberdeen link was spot on, and the dutch thing seems to have been accurate from what she already knew about her ancestry. Yes I'm sure a lot of these sort of tests are hit and miss but at least in this instance it definitely seems to have been pretty good.

I have ancestors from Aberdeen and Greater London. We're probably not (closely) related but it's still cool. I love it when KZbinrs do DNA tests but anyone who looks at the ethnicity part should take it with a huge grain of salt. It's not an exact science, more an educated guess. I'd only take the top two ethnicities seriously and only over 30 or even 40%. I just checked my 23&me estimate and it's changed from 22% Scandinavian to 2% which makes sense because I've traced back to my 3rd/4th grandparents and haven't found a single non-Brit. The best reason to do a DNA test is to look for DNA matches and work out how you're related. My ethnicity result couldn't tell me that my grandad was from Aberdeen or my great-grandad was from a tiny village in Norfolk, or even that I lived on the same street as my third cousin without realising or that I'd been to the house my great-great grandparents lived in without realising. Until doing this I would have said I didn't have any relatives outside England or Scotland. Now I know I have multiple relatives living in Ontario and a few in BC

Interesting video. Well Cyprus was a British administered dominion from 1878 to 1914, then it changed a little but remained a Crown Colony up to 1960, though we still have a couple of areas on the island that remain British, namely the bases of Akriotiri and Dhekelia. So the Cypriot side may of been a member of the family living or stationed in Cyprus for a while and met someone. The whole Scotland, northern, central and southern England thing works when you think of the industrial revolution and people moving for work, better work or better living conditions, etc... The Dutch side may be down to the closeness our two countries had for commerce, maritime and industrial relations.

You're one of us! All of London South of the Thames used to be classed as Surrey. So your family history story and the London result aren't in conflict. Yay! You're one of us!!!

Maybe someone mentioned it already but at 07:38 you mention you had great grandparents from Surrey and that might be the reason you are getting a Greater London result in your DNA results. Parts of Surrey were absorbed into greater London so that can definitely be the reason. All of the surrounding counties lost parts to Greater London which is why some towns once listed as being in Kent for example are now part of London. The county of Middlesex was totally absorbed and now only exists as a postal address but not on maps. Or at least that's how it was 20 years ago before I left the UK :)

Very interesting Alanna, yes you can call yourself British, I find most Canadians are. My one Canadian friend is 96% British! I was thinking of getting my ancestry, I think my Canadian friend could be more British than me...as I know for a fact my great grandfather was Dutch... so I'm not sure what percentage of British that would leave me.... if it was less than 96% I'd never live it down. Lol

When I did mine it was fairly evenly split between Lancashire and West Midlands and the London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex areas with a bit of Scottish & Welsh and trace elements of broadly northern European. I managed to do my family tree on my Dad's side going back a few hundred years and we did a tour of some of the villages in Kent and Sussex that our ancestors hail from. Like you, I thought it was so cool standing in churches I know they went to, walking along roads they probably walked down, looking at buildings they probably saw regularly and drinking in pubs they may well have themselves bought a pint in. I know that sort of thing doesnt thrill everyone, but I absolutely knew what you meant when you were talking about how cool it was to be in some of the same places your ancestors were in and doing some of the things they may have done

I've got two family members trace our ancestry back, one is my Dad and the other is his cousin who does it for the Nottingham UK area of the family. She's gone back to the 1400's too and apparently at least 4 of my ancestors have held the position of Sheriff Of Nottingham (yes, it's a real thing). So maybe in the past, my family chased down a certain outlaw....? I wouldn't want to do the work myself but the results can be fascinatiing. :-)

I love DNA reveals!! You really come from hardy stock & it's fabulous!! I would love if you did some vids where you visit your roots! It's so wonderful that you knew your great-grandmother! I knew my g-grandmother & g-grandfather, the latter having an Irish accent & who smoked a pipe. I wish I could smell that smoke again! I know SO many Dutch in Ontario... even some cousins are half Dutch. The Yorkshire Tea that I got my son was a hit, btw! Especially bc one of his fav gamers drinks it! It's always interesting to look back to see where our ancestors hail from and finding out about our past. It sounds like your family's history may have a good story behind it. That unknown 1.4% from NW Europe could in fact be Norse. Alanna the Viking. 🙂

my mum did my family tree most of my line from 1232 came from 60 miles from where i live now..only nearly 800 years and moved 60 miles in another 10,000 i may end up in america LOL

@@Greenwood4727 Did you know that 800 years is roughly 32 generations. You know how many grandparents you had 32 generations ago? 4,399,824,896. Yep, that is not a mistake, it's over four billion. I've done my tree back to the first census in 1801 and it's mostly complete, but going back further than that and you're into parish records. Another 100 years before that and unless you were some important noble, nobody cared enough to record your existence. It gets really difficult, especially as the number of ancestors doubles every generation. The numbers get huge pretty quick.

@@Greenwood4727 Yeah, that's the way to go if you're interested in your deep history. 23andMe is good for that because they analyse your Y-Chromosome which doesnt change over the generations. Your Y-chromosome is exactly the same as your fathers and his fathers and his fathers and so on right back to the dawn of man. If there is anything in the archaeological record that has your Y-chromosome, you have found a direct ancestor. The point I was making with the 4 billion/32 generations thing, is that the werent that many humans on the planet 800 years ago. Which means our entire species is heavily in-bred. You dont have to go back far - less than a thousand years - and we are all related to each other. From a family tree point of view, it's only really worth going back 200-300 years because you go much further than that and the numbers get massive and we are all related anyway. The only exception is trying to trace a single straight line, like you have done - just for curiosity really. Even at 300 years, that's 12 generations and it's still 8,290 ancestors.

I did a 23 & me DNA test to find relatives and I found 2nd cousins in England and 2 half Brothers and 1 half sister in the USA. Look at your DNA Matches. Thanks 😊

To Alanna who edited this video, good job with the drum solo😁, and the patreon ad😉. Have you considered subliminal advertising your patreon in YT vids?? 💡Similar to how you did this but only for less than a second, or no longer, of an unannounced clip not even sound. Simple clear graphics and font. 'Impact' is a perfect font to use ie 'Join Me on Patreon!' or simply the patreon logo filling the screen, should be enough! Make a series of them maybe, you doing something hysterical or disasterous with the huge patreon 'P' logo over it? Remember half a second to a second flash, that's all! 👍

I did a DNA test a few years ago, Im mostly English with a large chunk of Irish, being that that's from my great grandmother. i also have Scottish, German and Norwegian ancestry. I live in london but was interested to find out that my Dads side of the family originally come from Devon and were farmers who moved to london in the early 1800s. my mother's family originally came from Warwickshire and were also farmers who moved from their village to london in the early 1800s.

my kids bought me one of these test things last birthday. now please keep in mind that i am 209cm tall, blue eyed pasty pale skin and bald on top, with a red beard you could smuggle a family of foxes in ..... it said i was mostly scandinavian, but with over 2% of sub saharan african! ..... in my dreams! haha, i get sunburned when the alarmclock lights up! anyhoo, ;p apart from my dreams of getting a tan, another great vid! keep up the great work, and i suggest everyone looks into their family tree! it is fascinating! big love to all people :)

You have a connection to Britain, you feel happy here, and this is where you choose to be. The Genetic stuff is nice, but it doesn't give you anymore connection than you already had. For example, lots of Aussies and Kiwis have a genetic connection to Britain, but they haven't chosen this as the place they feel at home. They think of this more as a second home, a place they are connected to, and will be welcomed in, but not as desirable to live in as where they are.

Hiya Alanna, I recently found your YT and I must have binge watched a dozen of your videos today! I love your personality and think you're funny 😅 although I don't think it's intentional on your part lol. I think it's really cute how you always mix up your words... it's like you're having a constant fight with your own brain haha 💙 Anyway I just wanted to comment on your DNA results. I don't think it's uncommon for people from Canada to have UK ancestry as Canada was a British colony for quite a while. Obviously 🙄 It's weird cause I'm British, born in England but my DNA results revealed part of my DNA was Canadian, specifically first nation people. Anyhoo I have a suggestion for a video you could react to or discuss now you know you're essentially a Brit 😎 It explains the history and extent of the British empire, who they invaded, where the colonies were etc, etc in 15mins or so. 8:45 yeah it's true a lot of Canadians have British ancestry, a few of my great aunts and uncles emigrated there in the 50s, Trenton Ontario to be precise, my mum followed in the 60s but got homesick bless her and moved back after a year🤭... It's cool you felt connected to your ancestors 🙂
