I am 50 years old and had cataracts. I had my left eye cataract removed 1 month ago, and my right eye done yesterday. I feel that this is young to have cataracts. I haven’t been able to work for the past year due to the cataracts growing. I had to resort to having cataract surgery. I can now see clearly out of both eyes and am so thankful I made the choice to have the surgery. My quality of life is so much better. My parents had cataracts and also my grandparents had them as well. I am guessing this could be one reason why I had the at a younger age.

I developed cataracts a few years ago at the age of 37, left eye first changed from -8D to -6D over a few months, then the vision progressively got foggy over the following months. My right eye then started fogging up until my surgery. Indeed the doctors and nurses were surprised at my early cataracts. They also suspected the cause to be my long term use of a prescription steroid ointment to treat eczema on my fingers. I eventually found the eczema culprit to be whey protein (in milk, cream, milk chocolate, etc.), so while I solved the eczema problem, I still required cataract surgery. On the positive side, the surgery meant going from very near-sighted with thick glasses lenses to just needing reading glasses for fineprint.

I'm so glad you were able to get cataract surgery and figure out what was triggering your eczema. In some ways it sounds like things are better without thick glasses ❤

I did a bit of boxing during covid times in 2021 and got hit in the neck. No concussion, nothing like in childhood when injuries were frequent and everything was always ok. But after a few days of that neck hit I started to see flashes and floaters in one eye and then I went to eye hospital. They didn’t pick up anything. Later on in 2022 I noticed my right eye vision was rapidly deteriorating and I was diagnosed with posterior cataract. I can’t believe it takes that little hit with no other injury to cause cataract to develop 😮 people get into severe car accidents, black out and still no such consequences!

My eye doctor said I've got a 3 out of 4 cataract in my right eye, on both sides of the lens. My left eye is fine. Other than physical trauma and possibly UV exposure, I'm baffled. Physical trauma could definiteiyl cause a cataract. There may be a genetic component as well, but if you've ever sustained head or eye injury (even a minor one a long time ago), that can cause a traumatic cataract. Best of luck ❤

Hello. Thank you for this very informative video. After being shot in the eye with a pellet from a gelblaster my lens was knocked out of alignment and a cateract developed. I have since had surgery after waiting three years on a list to get seen. My situation has not been good with the vision in that eye getting worse, it was not much better after the surgery either. I,m getting the run a round by the establishment and am waiting to get sorted. My life has changed dramatically with what seems to be no end of strife. Anyway I trust in YHVH and have lost all respect for the health system in Australia. Shalom.

Hi there, it is hard to know what is going on without looking into your eye so my top recommendation is to get an eye examination to see if this is something that can be fixed or corrected. There are some side effects like dry eye and scar tissue that can grow behind the lens, both of which can be treated. I made a video about cataract side effects if that would be helpful for you:: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4CmeKxmbdCej8k I hope you have some improvement in your vision and symptoms ❤

Hi Dr. Lee, I'm due to have cataract surgery in my right eye next month. My left eye is fine, 20/20, but my left is 20/70. My vision is blurry with a slight milky haze. But with both eyes open I see just fine. My pupil isn't clouded over either. I'll talk with the doctor about this, but Just wondering if surgery is necessary at this point. And I have been guilty of aggressively rubbing my eyes. 😑 Glad you brought that up in this video! Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll be filming a video soon about how to pick an eye surgeon (it will be controversial but hopefully helpful) which I hope will be helpful. For the dry eye, you woulld be safe with preservative-free tears or gel drops (like Refresh Celluvisc which comes in a preservative-free) and if that is not enough definitely ask your eye doctor if you would benefit from prescription dry eye medications. Hope that helps!

Would like to know the average cost for premium cataract lens and surgery?
@MicheleLeeMD2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your state/surgery center/surgeon, which lens, and what is included in your premium lens "package." The cost from places I've worked for have varied from 1400 to 3000 for a toric lens (for astigmatism), and 2000 to 4000 for a multifocal or trifocal lens. The lower cost includes just the lens and surgery, the higher costs were packages that included any LASIK/PRK touchups, femtosecond laser (a laser to help with some parts of the surgery), and ORA (a device that measures for the lens power intraoperatively). Sorry I couldn't be more specific for you, but hope that helps give you an idea of what to expect. I am planning to make a video soon on types of lenses and pros/cons so I'll let you know when that is out 🙏

2.5 years ago, I got an insect probably a stink bug in my left eye despite wearing glasses. This stained my eye and I now have cloudy vision and it is similar to wearing sunglasses. My left eye has improved only a little bit especially in regards to light at night. I just had the cataracts done in my right eye last week with awesome results. I now have smaller cataracts in my stained eye so the doctor will be doing it soon. We are hoping that the surgery will improve the vision in this eye once the cataract is removed and the new lense is inserted. Have you seen a case like this before and do you think that it will work? Thank you for your time.

HI DR Lee, Ken in Ohio here. I'm now 63 years old and been wearing some manner of eye glasses for over 20 years. I don't know which side of the political isle you're on so I hope what I'm about to say next won't offend you but I like to target shoot, mostly 22's open sighted, meaning no optics. Up till about 15-20 years ago I was very good at hitting paper targets out to 75, sometimes even 100 yards. About 15 years ago things started to become increasingly blurry and I could no longer focus on the sights at a distance beyond 15 yards. With fairly powerful bifocals I can still drive, see good enough to function and as you can see be on the internet. I was seeing an eye doctor right across the street from where I live who informed me I have cataracts that will eventually have to come out. This was about 3 years ago but each subsequent visit he told me they weren't bad enough yet. Then he stopped taking my insurance and I had to find a new eye doctor. So I find a new eye doctor in another city and he told me the same thing for several visits. Shortly thereafter he stopped accepting my insurance as well so I was back to square one. About a month ago I found yet another eye doctor in another city that still accepts my insurance and have an appointment with HER on the 21st of this month. I will follow the dr's advice no matter what even if she only advises yet another pair of glasses but i will tell her in a polite way that if eventually I need cataracts out anyway I'd rather just skip the foreplay and get it done, partially because I want it done before something happens and she stops taking my insurance too. So I guess my question to you is if one of your patients was to tell you the same thing I'm going to tell my doctor would you consider or rude or offensive? I certainly do not want to piss off the person that has the future of my sight in their hands

I had Lasik in my 20s and I now need glasses around 15years later. Is cataract surgery an option I can consider to restore vision without glasses?
@MicheleLeeMD2 жыл бұрын
Cataract surgery can help you see without glasses at certain focal points (distance or near). There are lenses like EDOF lenses (Vivity, Symfony) that can give you some range but we usually don't recommend multifocal lenses after you've had refractive surgery. It's hard to explain everything in a comment. You may want to watch my lens video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYXZeX-Zjtusbpo or the video about advances in cataract surgery where we talk about lasik and cataract surgery kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5-XgXWKpamNn7s

Thanks Dr Lee! I am wondering though, if cataract is almost inevitable at old age, why it is not done in lieu of refractive surgery?
@MicheleLeeMD2 жыл бұрын
@@teamplayer613 Great question. Cataract surgery as it is now does not give you back your 20 year old eyes. You loose accomodation, meaning your range of vision and ability to focus at near. Multifocal lenses, lenses that can provide multiple focal points, are getting better and better but are not perfect. There are those who are not LASIK or PRK candidates who do a refractive lens exchange, which is essentially earlier cataract surgery as a refractive procedure. We are quite careful with who we will do this surgery for though. Hope that answers your question!

As is normal one eye was worse (my left eye) to the point I was getting eyestrain and a real difficult time driving at night with the glare from headlights. When I had my exam back in December I could not even read the eye chart with the left eye. I just had both eyes done last month and for me it was a life changing event. I had to wear thick glasses since I was 3-4 years old and now I am without glasses except for reading and looking at the computer. It still feels funny not being so dependent on glasses In a few days I get fitted for glasses for for the near vision. I was not a candidate for the Toric lens and just had the distance vision lens implanted that are approved by Medicare.

I feel being at my level and being able to manage on my own and now know I can live same or slightly higher in retirement would push me to vote agaist any plan to get id of them. If you weren't a sickie, this wouldn't happen to you.
