Are you ready to talk to native speakers? Do you feel afraid to use the language skills you've learned? In this video I show you how easy it is to start a conversation with a native speaker in any circumstance. It's time to get over our fear of rejection, making mistakes, and looking stupid. Go out and speak Chinese, Japanese, or any language today. No more being afraid!
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

You're right, being able to strike up a conversation is fun and rewarding. Very worth it. The thing I would caution is to be psychologically strong enough to handle rejection. I think that unless you're prepared to deal with it, at least initially, there's real pain associated with rejection, and you must prepare to take a hit on your self-esteem w/o letting it damage you. You certainly seem to have succeeded in that aspect!

You should learn Esperanto! I thought I was bad at learning languages until I learned Esperanto, and now I'm almost fluent. Even if you don't care about becoming fluent, it can help you prepare to learn other languages more easily. Think of it as a recorder; you know, the instrument that´s often taught to children. It helps them understand basic underlying concepts of music theory and how to interact with music, right? The same can be said for Esperanto and language. Plus, it's based on mostly Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, which means I can understand a large amount of vocabulary from those sources without having to learn them all from scratch. It's been amazing.

You are so right about making mistakes. I believe the whole issue with perfection is embedded into Chinese and Japanese culture, so they are really reluctant to speak or make any conversations with other people in a foreign language. Wow! Just...WOW!!! Both Chinese and Japanese???!!! You seem to be equally proficient in both, so much so, that you can help Japanese people with learning Chinese and able to help Chinese people with learning Japanese as second languages! I hope you pursue a career in education, obviously in language instruction! You've already have inspired me to perfect my Spanish and to go on to learn German next! You've learned the best kept "secret" of language learning; don't be afraid of making mistakes and cast aside your timidity. When I first met my wife (who is from Ecuador) she spoke no English. NONE! I knew just the raw basics of Spanish but I needed badly to improve. Well, we both seeking to learn, so I attempted to teach her English. Her pronunciation was so bad, I swore that she'd NEVER learn. Turns out, I had no patience and I was just a terrible teacher! She began practicing (actually SPEAKING) every day. Fending off smirks and laughter at her mistakes, but advancing until 2 and 1/2 years later she had virtually no problems making herself understood anywhere. :) A common trait among her detractors was that they only spoke ONE language and that one poorly! Meanwhile, she continues to improve her English while the English proficiency of those insensitive clowns who smirked at her, remain STAGNANT! It's all because she doesn't have any fear! It only took myself about 30 years to learn Spanish because of my timidity and fear of making mistakes. Most of my advances came because my wife broke-down complicated Spanish into simplified Spanish for me. You're 100% correct about abandoning one's apprehensions about making errors when learning another language. LOSE YOUR FEAR! ¡PIERDE TU MEIDO!

You are absolutely right about that. I always try to make an effort to talk as much as I can in any language I know and I’m not afraid or shy to make mistakes at all. My advice is just like yours exactly! Don’t be shy or afraid to communicate at all. Every time I walk into any store I try my best to speak their language even with just a hello, thank you & goodbye. Practice makes progress. Anming, if I may, I have a suggestion for you. You know how you mentioned that KZbin videos are longer than TikTok videos. Well if you have free time, like 15 more minutes a day, could you kindly extend your videos even more. Not for bloopers, but for reading out each conversation you had and breaking it down for us. Like sounding out the conversations word per word if you don’t mind. Explaining what it means. It would really help us practice and learn what we hear. This will make all your videos a combination of entertainment and educational language learning. Anming aka “A”dvanced “N”orturing M”otivational “I”nstructor “N”arrating “G”enerosity 💝
@OrientalPearl
@OrientalPearl 3 жыл бұрын
I would like to, but I tried doing 15 minute videos and the audience simply would not watch more than 5-6 minutes. KZbinrs want to keep audience retention around 50% ideally. If I make a 10 minute video, people watch 5 minutes. If I make a 15 minute video, people still watch 5 minutes. It hurts the video's performance.

It's funny, I have the same mentality as you: what's the worst that can happen, ignore you? My native language is Spanish, grew up learning English in elementary school, and then took Italian in high school. Then I studied German on my own. I used my Italian in Italy every single time I traveled there. No one knew I wasn't Italian lol. My German is not as good, but again, even the basic elementary German I know, made me blend in (I think it's the skin tone and knowing the proper pronunciation). I am now learning Japanese.

As you would know, Japanese don't generally strike up conversations with strangers, they very much keep to themselves - as opposed to being in China, or even Australia where I'm from where it's a rather common thing to talk to anyone. Your videos have me wondering, do you ever get "rejected" (for a lack of a better word), ignored, cold stares, WTF looks, "what are you trying to sell me?" etc. when you approach people? The willingness of the Chinese ppl doesn't surprise me at all, but surely the Japanese ppl must be taken aback? In fact, I'm generally very wary of the motives behind strangers approaches and if I didn't know who you were I would most likely say "no thanks" and walk away. I wonder if the camera makes them even more hesitant, or does that somehow actually make some people let their guard down ?
@OrientalPearl

That's true. They don't always like to break the ice, but some Japanese people get really chatty if you break the ice first. I've met many Japanese people that were the complete opposite of shy.

Thank you for these videos! I studied Japanese for a while but swapped over to Chinese because it somehow resonated with me more and I found the grammar easier ;) I'm now at about HSK3-4 level Chinese. I haven't taken any formal exams but all my mock exams indicate that I am at this level (intermediate). I have studied by myself and have found that listening to videos documenting everyday conversations on the street are a very powerful tool for learning. Once I feel that my Chinese is at an acceptable level and I am more confident, I will probably give Japanese another try.
