Top F1 teams spend over $400M a year. Why do they do it? Well, obviously winning is great advertising, but racing is also a test-bed for new technology that eventually trickles down to the rest of us. At least, that’s what they’ll tell you. But I’ve never seen a 200mph Corolla with downforce measured in tons. So, what actually trickles down from F1? What have they done for us lately? If they're not giving tech to us... where's it going? Time to find out!

I still remember when the F1 car is so much smaller and have more powerful engine (I doesn't include the hybrid system, just plain engine power) with a traditional aerodynamics. And now we have a super efficient engine with gigantic downforce and multiple parts are perfected with computing power.

Right now the only development in f1 comes from teams having to think of workarouds for new regulations that are increasingly more strict for emmisions, i no longer like f1 ever since they dropped the v10, it lost all sense of emotion and excitement in the race, now they are always the same two guys on the front and their strategy comes down to pray for the one in front of you to make a mistake, otherwise it's near impossible to pass and have a back and forth

Except the Espace F1 is not meant to be sold to the public unlike AMG One.... That's because unlike the AMG, the Espace F1 literally just equipped with bare F1 engine without any slight tuning to it for everyday use. You cannot cold-start the Espace like a normal road car, you have to let the engine idle at 4000 RPM for a minimum of 30 mins before you can drive it, and it requires a full F1 crew team to do that instead of just one single car key....

The "downforce on the SUV" thing is often actually an anti-drag thing, IIRC. I remember learning about this when I was reading up on thick airfoils for the root section of wind turbine blades. Something to do with sharp cutoff at the end of the airfoil shape allowing a vortex to set up behind which effectively extends the chord length, giving some of the benefits of a long, tapered airfoil shape. The sharp edge helps the air flowing over the car exit cleanly, rather than getting mixed up in turbulence behind the car, which reduces low-pressure drag at the back of the car. Or something like that. It's been a few years since I looked at this stuff. Look up flat-back airfoil aerodynamics if you're interested.

Is that what a gurney flap does as well?
@clawsoon
@clawsoon 2 жыл бұрын
@@klee8249 It's been a while since I looked at this stuff, but I believe that a Gurney flap is a cheap, simple way to give you the high lift of a trailing edge flap. So the sharp corners on the rear of a car are to *reduce* drag by increasing effective chord, while a Gurney flap *increases* both lift and drag by increasing effective camber.
@jessenliang
@jessenliang 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you nailed it. German aerodynamicist Wunibald Kamm discovered the effect in the 30's, and created the body shape we now refer to as a Kammback. If you truncate an airfoil section with a sharp abrupt edge at a location at or after which the cross section at that area is 50% of the airfoil's maximum cross-sectional area, you induce an area of wake turbulence behind that flat face. This wake turbulence creates an area of low pressure that mimics the effect of the tail section you cut off in that the free stream can't enter that region, thereby maintaining smooth airflow behind the car. It's a really simple, clever trick to increase aerodynamics in an era where they couldn't rigorously understand the effects of vehicle shape on aero. You can even see it on modern cars like the C5 Corvette, Prius, Insight, or Audi A7, to list a few.

Back in the day (late 1960's), my dad negotiated the very first contract for the anti-lock braking system when working for Boeing. Fast forward to winter of 1995 in Montana, I'm driving my folks Lincoln on a very icey road. I wasn't used to driving an automatic transmission, so my speed was too high as I approached a stop sign. The car had ABS, I stood hard on the brakes and came to a safe stop at the stop sign. Had I been in my pickup at that speed, I'd have flown right through that stop sign. So ABS goes back to the late 60' with Boeing. Pretty crazy!

That race happened to be Sochi which has always been known as a boring track but ended up making for a really entertaining weekend that included a McLaren on pole and a Williams on the second row and of course the craziness on the last couple laps (I won’t spoil it for you in case you decide to go back and watch what you missed from 2021). After that I was hooked, I went back and watched every race/qualifying I missed (including the disaster that was the “race” at Spa) and I spent the whole offseason nerding out about the new generation of cars which so far have not disappointed one bit

Love the show! First time commenting. Flywheel energy storage (FES) is a type of battery "technically." Would have been cool to talk about the busses California used, briefly in the 50s I believe, utilizing the same rotational energy storage. Keep up the good work 🤟

Mirrors were first used on racecars in the 1910s or 20s. No road car would look the way it does today without mirrors, so that has to be up there as my favorite trickle down racing tech.

One major thing that gets overlooked is the experience and methods of development for engineers. One of the reasons that Honda's stint in F1 in the late 90s/early 2000s was unsuccessful was that Honda had a policy where their new, young engineers would join the F1 program, and after a couple of years once they'd gotten good, be transferred back to the road car division. This obviously hurt the F1 team, but it meant that they had engineers and designers who'd spent time in the most high pressure environment with ridiculous restrictions on what they could do, and how they had to get thing X to fit in place Y and still meet target Z. The changes to the way they thought about engineering and design as a result were a huge positive for the road car division, and is one of the biggest examples of knowledge transfer from F1 to the consumer world.

Williams worked with Sainsburys supermarket to develop shrouds for the front of refrigerated open shelving units to redirect the cold air back onto the shelves, saving on wasted energy but also meaning you wouldn't freeze your ass off walking down the fridge isles.
