As the remnants of 19th-century Victorian ideals died out, the horrors of World War I and the rise of Hollywood played a major part in establishing what made men attractive 100 years ago. And some of it will surprise you.

I like the way men dressed in the 20s and 30s. It was somewhat formal without being uncomfortable and it was clean and neat. It looked like the person actually put in some effort.

In the 'teens and twenties, the Arrow Shirt Man in full page ads everywhere was THE acme of 'the desirable male' in the era. Leyendecker was the illustrator and basically created the archetype young man: WASPY and Anglo-saxon, athletic and Yale or Princeton to the fingertips. Leyendecker was gay and the Arrow Shirt man was modeled over and over by his exceptionally attractive boyfriend. Millions of women tore the ads out and put them on the wall as an image their 'ideal mate'.

The "Hitler moustache" was fairly common during and after WW1 because you could keep your moustache if you trimmed off the sides of it and still wear a gas mask. Some men continued to wear it like that as it signified you were a military/combat veteran. My grandfather wore that kind of moustache until WW2 started, and then grew the sides back out.

That change from status to personality is fascinating to me. I'm sure it was a slow, gradual change over a generation or two, but in hindsight it must've been pretty quick. Maybe shocking and confusing to some families. Or maybe some people liked it. I can only guess how individuals must've handled it.

It is/was a problem because when people of color were portrayed, some of their well known physical features, such as lips in people of African descent or eyes in people of Asian descent, were exaggerated, making them seem unattractive/worthy of mockery. Also, with all these white actors portraying people from other races, it didn’t allow people of those different groups to have an opportunity to get into the industry, so they were excluded. This also reinforced the idea that whiteness was the ideal and anything else was seen as less than.

The iconic 1930s and 40s and the Golden Age of Hollywood was an even better era for men's fashions and style! Men today for the most part dress terribly with their backwards baseball hats and especially with their pants all bunched up around their ankles! As a former retired NYC fashion illustrator who has studied the history of fashion at a fashion/art school in NYC I find that men need to pay more attention to the way they dress and look! Take note of the late greats Cary Grant, Fred Astaire , William Powell and Douglas Fairbanks Jr and how they dressed! Even when wearing casual wear they looked classy, elegant, but comfortable and stylish! They were often on Best Dressed lists! Pants should be tailored and there should be no break in the crease! Even when they wore jeans and a casual shirt they looked well put together! Hem those pants if they're too long! Either do it yourself or find a mother, girlfriend or seamstress/tailor to do it for you, otherwise you'll look sloppy!
