I’ve been a lifelong fanatic Elvis fan since the age of five and I’m currently 54. I started singing at the age of five specifically because of this man. The more people honestly take the time to break down his vocals. The more people appreciate just how dynamic and fantastic of a singer he truly was. He had the uncanny ability to make it seem like he was singing only to you at any one time. His vocal texture and warmth I just simply off the scale. And when he wants to go up and stretch himself he does so flawlessly. The total package in my honest opinion. Long live the king!

English version of the italian song, «Torna a Sorrento». At only 1 minute, 47 seconds, it was the shortest song to ever top Billboard in 1961. Following the monster hit, It’s Now Or Never, italian style. This man could sing anything, and better than anyone.

When elvis came back from the army in 1960 he came back with this voice it was more mature and operatic and even opera stars were in awe of him pavaroti said he could sing like me but I couldn’t sing like him ! with this voice in 1960 elvis gave us songs like it’s now or never, are you lonesome tonight? can’t help falling in love and surrender to name a few, his range and tone in these songs are incredible but this song in particular I’ve always loved for the highs and lows and most of all that incredible high operatic note at the very end which always gives me goosebumps every time I hear it! these songs and this one In particular shows what a great and versatile singer he truly was , outstanding!
@mathiasstrom77904 ай бұрын
If Elvis had been professionally trained, he wouldve 1000% been the greatest opera singer in history. He had absolutely everything, pitch, emotion, control etc etc. A voice like his comes once in a century, if that. I would put Orbison above Elvis in technique and range, even Elvis thought Roy was the greatest singer ever but Elvis had something that few others had. Michael Jackson is the only one I can think of that had the same thing. I think what I mean is, it would probably sound good even if they sang out of key thats how good their voices sounded in general lol idk tbh

An interesting bit of trivia about this song..When in the studio, Elvis was having difficulty hitting that last note and wanted to drop the key, but the producer said that it would not sound as strong with the rest of the song. So he got some advice from an opera singer. Told him to act like he was dry heaving the note from his gut, like he was vomiting..after laughing, you get what you hear...
@reneleclerc61193 жыл бұрын
That "opera singer" who worked with Elvis was Ray Walker, who just happened to be at the session where "Surrender" was recorded, since he was the bass singer with the Jordanaires.

This song is taken from the original Italian song Torna A Surriento sung by the greats Caruso, Lanza and Pavarotti. Elvis loved listening to Mario Lanza and hence why he recorded not only this some but also O Sole Mio/It’s Now or Never. Elvis’ English versions gives the Italian greats a good run for their money. I wish Elvis lived long enough to do a duet with Pavarotti featuring both of these songs. It would have been wild!😃

I love his voice in this one. Can’t beat 60s Elvis. After losing his mother, after the army. He’s in a dark and interesting place privately and music is changing. He recorded “Little Sister” (very early 60s sound) “Such a night” “Fever” all from this era. Then he closes out the 60s with the 68 comeback special! And that’s PEAK Elvis, imo.

Here's some geek trivia for you: I heard this repeated several times including on the sirius Elvis channel. Elvis was having trouble hitting that last high note at the very end, so another singer or vocal coach (I forgot which) told him that in order to hit the note from his diaphragm, he had to sing it as if he was...uh. "heaving". It worked, listen to it again. -If David gets a song for his 50th, then I should get a whole concert, LOL.
