Great reminder. Grampa had a coast to coast store. He gave dad one. 1960z tp worked great. Mid 1970z tp went to a pulp fortified with fillers and re-recycled mush pulp including clay. Dad got a mushpuppy goo out and pulled it off.

I just googled Gulf Coast Filters. When I was selling them They mostly did marine engines. They are heavy into over the road trucks. They have a fleet of trucks near where I live. Alvord Tx. Several trucks with over a million miles with no oil drains with the original engine parts. That one you have is getting popular with diesel pickup owners. The truck engines take the O 2. Uses two paper towel rolls.As can be expected some truck owners are useing different towels than Bounty Big. Rolls.The testimonials are very interesting.

Was on another forum about the Motor Guard compressed air filter. They reasoned that they were designed for the special Motor Guard element. Some dummies decided to use toilet paper in them. They dont realize the filters were all designed to use toilet paper

Went to a car show in San Francisco in the 60s.There was this beautiful old late 30s Chevrolet with the hood up. There was this beautiful extra chrome Frantz oil cleaner. It made my day. Later looked at a cut away display of a boat in San Jose. It had a cut away of a Motor Guard installed. If I remember right Frantz had an extra cost show car model At one time there was a Motor cycle club in San Jose that had the Harleys equipped with Frantzs.

One advantage the Gulf Coast Filters that take paper towels have over the Luber Finer is the oil has to flow thru 11" on that filter and and 22"" in the double. That's why the Frantz oil cleaner was better than the old Fram that was factory installed on my 41 Dodge. The oil traveled thru 4" of media instead of about 2" of media.With the small spin on element like came factory installed on my 64 Rambler American it was 1/32". Some are a little thicker but not much.

Many years ago I saw a fancy Peter Bilt over the road truck with a chrome plated Luber Finer with Peter Bilt written on it. In those days the element probably used cotton waste. The old guy I worked for was big on Luber Finer. We had the plain Jane ones like the one you have.

The first Motor Guards were made in San Jose Ca. I took a Motor Guard Demo unit to a Flea market.things were working fine until I changed the toilet paper. When I turned on the gear pump it tripped the circuit breaker for a whole row of venders. The first filters had a screen like the Frantz to keep the toilet paper from touching the orifice and shutting off the oil. It was in the top and had no seal holding it down. When you removed the toilet paper the screen came out with it. It looked like part of the toilet paper.The one on my car had the newer design. They said you could filter gasoline but the element was pushed down against the inlet. Had to drop something like a screen in the bottom.

Several years ago I was getting the big Fleet Guard from a International truck dealer. They ordered them new .They had a smaller size than the 750 .I believe it was a 500. Took the same elements as the Luber Finer. I tried to go directly to the factory. They don't want to deal with someone that only buys a half a dozen. I still have a 500. It was just the right size for a roll of the good stuff like you have in the towel machine at Wal-Mart bathroom. Like a big beautiful roll of Scott 1000. Used two end plates and a piece of exhaust pipe drilled full of holes. Some have a core.I reached in and poked it full of holes. Used it to filter used cooking oil.

The only parts for the air filter that fit the lube oil filters are the seals the top seal for the air filter is nylon for the tee handle the big gasket and the oil filter tee handle is rubber on both filters. Been using Viton. I use converted m 30s on my cars.

the Motor Guard was the best filter. Frantz had a nice over center clamp in the 80s. They charged extra for it. I have a couple of Gulf Coast O1 Jr's that have the nice clamps. The Gulf Coast toilet paper filters are glass filled nylon. They have a smaller tube but don't need the sleeve because they have a better seal at the bottom. We all got our start with Frantz. Motor Guard and Gulf coast are improved.filters.

I just bought a 16 package of Great Value 1000 at Wal Mart. It is comparable to Scott 1000. The core is a little smaller than the Scott. It will work fine for the Motor Guard. Tried it on a Motor Guard that I had sleeved. It went on but was too tight. Unrolling 30 rounds was perfect for the Motor Guard. I am running 8 Motor Guards and Gulf Coasts. Getting ready to do 2 riding mowers. Adding 1/2 " to the core seal to compensate for the shorter roll.

Yesterday I installed a Motor Guard and a KN full flow filter on the Ford tractor hydraulic system. Got the pressure down with a orifice made from a grease Zerk.The spin on filter is to take the flow if there is too much resistance thru the Scott 1000.The hydraulic fluid also lubricates the 12 speed transmission.lots of wear metal. The stock filter is only a screen.

Seals for the Frantz and Motor Guard filters are available from McMaster Carr. SKY on the top of the filters is the name of the company that owned Frantz at that time. Skipper K. Yee. Another interesting filter was invented by Wendell Rogers in about 1968 and initially named the Rogers Filtration System. It used a roll of paper towel and it’s use was primarily for filtering diesel fuel in over the road trucks. The company changed owners several times and is now known as Racor but now uses a standard pleated paper element. I own several of the old original Rogers filters. The original Rogers looks almost identical to the current production large Racor filters.

smasg Thanks for the input. On the seals can I just ask McMaster Carr for "Frantz seals" or "Motor Guard seals", or is it by dimension / part number ? The Rogers filter sounds interesting, care to part with one? Then I can make another video.

I get every thing from McMaster Carr. Metric adapters tubing ECT. You have to know the size. They are round. The Motor Guard takes 4 5/8× 4 7/8"× 1/8 dash 247. Don't remember the Frantz. I use the round o rings on the Gulf Coast O1 junior. I need to.measure and order some. Sometimes when filtering diesel or gasoline you need Viton. My riding mowers and the old Ford 390 have the juniors.

NASA had some problems with their paper towel filters in Africa. The locals were selling them. I think they leave the site abandoned except when they send up a shuttle. I think NASA instigated putting the towels and toilet paper in a sock and calling them Gulf Coast filter elements. I hear the locals will bust up a runway and sell the rebar.

My 64 Rambler American L head had. a spin on. filter mount bolted.to the head with head bolts. Like most stock filters it was pleated paper. It had the orifice like the ones you show. It was a little better than nothing. I was using Standard Delo 100 30 wt. I was ignorant and was changing the oil every time it looked dirty. When I found out about. the Frantz I tossed the spin and put on the Frantz. That was the end of dirty oil and oil changes for me.

Pleated paper filters might be 98 percent effective at removing large abrasives. Modern engines have very few large abrasives in the oil. You remove the small engine wearing abrasives acid sludge by installing a depth bypasd filter or draining the oil.Why would any mechanically inclined person choose to waste money on oil routine oil changes.also the engine will last longer and run better if the oil is never allowed to get dirty.

Haven't bought any Luberfiner elements in years for the 750s. Some used pleated paper. Some used pulverized newspapers and wood chips. Some used cotton. The reason the Gulf Coast filter is so much better is the oil has to travel thru 11 inches of media. 22 inches on the double element. Yours was designed for 1 roll of Bounty big roll paper towels. The newer models use a sock filter. They were to replace the famous Frantz 3 stacker. My 64 Rambler American flat head 6 came from the factory with a spin on bypass filter bolted to the head upside down. It was the same as the small Baldwin you have. It was better than nothing. The way I was able to clean up the oil was I tossed it and Installed a Frantz oil cleaner. The oil turned amber and stayed that way. The Motor Guard was a better design but I didnt find about them until about 1966. Now you have the Australian Jackmaster and Gulf Coast jrs. All I have now is the Motor Guards and Gulf Coasts. As a mechanic I've used all of them. They are all good. I prefer the top loaders.

Don't know about the filter. There are several that are better than the Amsoil. They make the mistake of cutting them open. A filter man can see they don't have enough depth to clean oil. Poor folks can't afford to pay more and get less.

The original Amsoil bypass filter had the depth to clean oil but were too expensive to service. The spin on Amsoil filters don't clean oil and are still to expensive to service. Its not so much how small the micron rating but how long the filter can hold that rating. For toilet paper I've heard claims of 100th of 1 micron to 2 micron. Mostly 1/10 th of 1 micron. My tape measure doesn't measure that small. A human hair is something like 80 microns. I just look at the dip stick. My 37 Studebaker book said change the bypass filter when the oil looks dirty on the dip stick. That filter was far superior at cleaning oil than a modern. Pleated filter. It was cotton. As good as toilet paper.

The origional Motor Guard oil filter used a square gasket on the main body and at the tee handle. I use regular o rings that I get from McMaster Carr. I sometimes use Viton for fuel. One guy that converted a compressed air filter to filter oil said the hard material for the tee handle thrust washer on the compressed air filter lasted 8 years. The M 30 compressed air filter is similar to the origional lube oil filter but is a little beefier. My 93 Subaru Legacy has a converted M 60 on the transmission and a converted M 30 on the lube oil. I put aluminum parts in them. I'm stocked up on 4 5/8x 4 7/8 viton o rings for the Motor Guards Just bought a 10 pack of O rings for the Gulf Coasts at Purvis bearings in Denton Tx.

Years ago I was talking to a retired Boeing engineer that designed the Motor Guard. He said sometimes he used a smaller roll so that it had a larger surface area. The tapered housing sealed the roll at the bottom. This might be an advantage for dealing with a lot of sludge.Probably not needed in a modern engine.

You may have noticed the big Gulf Coast paper towel filter has the restrictor orifice in the center tube which is the inlet. It is the same as most all orifices used on bypass filters since the 20s. 1/16th inch I believe. The oil comes up thru the tube out thru the orifice down thru 11 inches of media and out thru the outlet port. Almost no pressure on the element. Of course its 22 inches on the double towel model. This filter has the proper design. Similar to the 1953 model Frantz oil cleaner which made it the best cleaning oil filter in its day. Even my Fram with the cotton element couldn't compete with the Frantz. Pleated paper is too thin to clean oil. It is for full flow filters that need a high volume flow of oil.

I just added a spacer to the top of the old 50 year old Motor Guard to compensate for the shorter rolls. All they need is to push the core up against the top seal. The spacer can be either at the top or bottom.most paper is about 3/8 shorter than the old paper. I cut a 1/4 " 1 1/2 by 2 " spacer. Anything can be used for a spacer that can take heat. I have a lathe and some aircraft aluminum tubing. I put the spacer at the bottom on the old 50 year old Motor Guard. They filtered from the bottom up

7:00 I've read that the orifice was on the outlet side to ensure that it did not become plugged. Seems reasonable to me, though I think that there would be a low probability of that occuring. Clearly, it does not matter where the orifice is from a flow regulation perspective.

Havent used the Frantz in many years. I went with the top loaders. I dont think it matters. For years Frantz put the orifice under the screens at the outlet. I believe Frantz puts the orifice at the inlet now. The Australian Jackmaster Classic has the orifice at the outlet. I put a .025 wire welder tip in brass fitting and put it at the inlet on the Jackmaster Classic. Not much chance of the orifice clogging in a modern engine with a full flow filter. I check to make sure the filter is heating up.

One correction, unless the media is plugged, it's not under engine oil pressure. The only spot that's under engine oil pressure is right at the entry orifice, unless the orifice is at the exit. But my Frantz has it at the entrance.

When I say toilet paper filters better than the paper towels I'm not considering the size advantage of the big towels.and the fact that they are orifice down to filter at the same rate as the toilet paper. Size advantage means something. I. Changed my Perma Cool universal adapters.I put a pipe plug in one port.I made an orifice out of a wire welder tip. .025 I believe.I returned the clean oil to the valve cover. I have a few old Frantz 2 port adapters. Used one on the Kohler engine on the Craftsman mower. Returned the clean oil by removing the drain plug.If it has an oil pump it gets a toilet paper filter. Gulf Coast juniors for both mowers.

Frantz had a tough time deciding if the orifice should be at the inlet or outlet. Its better at the inlet but the old cars especially the ones with no full flow filters had a lot of large chunks of carbon that could clog the inlet. Not a problem in modern cars. Some Fords put too much soot in the oil. Frantz had a smaller orifice to deal with that problem. We used a smaller orifice to slow the flow.

Years ago I put a single roll Gulf Coast O1 paper towel filter on a new Dodge Cummins horizontal on the frame The frame wasnt wide enough to bolt both brackets. I sandwiched in a 1/4" plate. Worked fine. Some are using the little Frantz and not changing it enough. On my old Ford 6.9 diesel I changed the Gulf Coast jr toilet paper every 15 00 miles with Delo 15 40 conventional. It was bolted to the fan shroud.used a self tapping hollow bolt in the fill neck.always drained good Took a half a minute to change the toilet paper. The Dodge owner brought Amsoil. I saved the oil I drained. Lasted me a year or so.

I ordered a Austrailian Jackmaster. It looks like it is the best of the ones still in production. It came with the Jackmaster element that is wrapped in a fabric like panty hose. I will use it later. I put in a roll of Great Value 1000. Im stocked up on Scott and Great Value 1000. I see they are making the diameter smaller and the cores bigger. The Jackmaster has no center tube like the Frantz. The TP core is the center tube.. Being a top loader you push the TP down against the core seal at the bottom. When you start the engine the oil pressure goes to the top and pushes down on the top of the paper. No sleeves or the ring at the bottom. My first trip with the Jackmaster was to work. The filter is hot all the way to the top. The classic needs a wrench to remove the top. Using TP I will need a pair of long nosed pliers to remove the used TP It filters the same as the Gulf.Coast junior. Had to remove a Motor Guard to install it. Another good one but they went to compressed air filters. The Frantz was made when TP fit the tube. No sleeves in the 60s. I see some of the paper has even larger cores now. The seal is almost too small for the cores now. No thanks. Of course the Frantz elements fit. I use toilet paper. I think some paper will fit the Frantz if you can find it. I put spacers in my Motor Guards. All you have to worry about is getting a seal around the core seal.

I got a Jackmaster filter in from Australia today. IT Is the most rugged small filter ive seen. Looks like one you would use for off road use. The oldest Motor Guards I have filtered from the bottom up. For the shorter paper I dropped spacers in the bottom to push the core up against the seal. The Jackmaster uses its own elements. Looks like it will take tightly rolled toilet paper. Its over built like the big Gulf Coast filters for military use. Saw one on top of a Army 5 ton front bumper probably as strong as the bumper. I think the Jackmaster is coming here for military use. They aint cheap. I got the Classic model with no hose and fittings. Looks like the Jackmaster can handle the shorter paper and the core size doesnt matter. It has no tube the paper core is the center tube. The Frantz cant deal with the core changes. Best to use the Frantz elements unless you are skilled at using toilet paper. With the top loaders you are pushing the roll down against the core seal then the oil pressure takes over.

I like the sandwich adapters when installing the filters. I normally use the Perma Cool universal sandwich adapters that I got from Jegs. The thing I dont like about sandwich adapters is they tend to keep the bypass filter full of oil at shut down by keeping air from entering the filter. The old Frantz two ports only worked for the larger engines. They depended on a pressure difference thru the sandwich adapter. With the little engines such as 4 cylinder or my lawn mowers I.convert them to a one port adapter.Even the top loaders can be a mess if the filter is full when you open it up. Sometimes you can open the lid just enough to let air in. Good luck with the Frantz. Went to Fort Worth with Gulf Coast filters for a large converted bus and a Volvo. Hit a snag with the Volvo. Normally use a tee at the oil pressure switch. Instead of the normal pipe threads the oil pressure switch looked like spark plug threads. That's where you need a 2 port sandwich adapter. Of course I didnt bring them.

You can use regulat o rings in the Motor Guard. I got my last ones from McMaster Carr. Viton 4 5/8 by 4 7/8 .Not sure about the T handle.o ring. Been using the compressed air thrust washers. Some kind of nylon. The old lube oil filters used rubber. I can get o rings from a bearing supply here. Probably should get a couple for the Australian Jackmaster Classic. It might outlast me if I keep it clean and dont pinch it. The Jackmaster Classic is a nice filter Better suited for toilet paper than the Frantz. They use a bigger core seal and no center tube. They use a smaller orifice at the outlet.

Was talking about the Australian Jackmaster oil filter. I mentioned the elements were expensive. An Australian said no he uses toilet paper. Looks like a better design.

The last big name bypass filter that took the same chopped newspaper and wood chip element as the Luber Finer. Was the Cummins Fleet Guard 750.It was a simpler design. At one time Cummins claimed an 80% increase in engine life. I dont doubt it.They were all optional equipment. Mack trucks used centrifuges. Not sure if they were standard or optional equipment. Haven't driven a truck in 40 years.Dont know why they have gone to the less effective pleated paper spin on filters. The mack centrifuges were very effective. Worked for one company that managed to put the Luberfiners on the firewall. I did a fleet of Powerstrokes about the time the 6.0s came out. They ordered the big Gulf Coast 01 paper towel filters bolted to the frame. I liked the 7.3. Not too crazy about the 6.0. The 7.3s had a couple of pipe plugs for pressure and return. I didnt have the fill cap they have now.

The Motor Guard was my favorite. They were the easiest to service. The tee handle did the grunt work. I liked the tapered housings and the tee handle. Motor Guard didn't have any large filters. They had manifolds. An inlet and a outlet manifold. The larger the engine the more you manifolded together. They had 2 3 or 4 filters manifolded together. The oil filter people are all gone now. I talked to a Motor Guard compressed air filter dealer. He said I have been selling the Motor Guards for 25 years.Never heard of Motor Guard oil filters.

The oldest Motor Guard has San Jose ca on top. A guy in Campbell California had me install a Frantz oil cleaner with the Frantz adapter that eliminated the full flow filter. In his case it wasnt a risk because there was nothing.big in the oil. He ran a Mustang dragster. Everything he owned was pristine. It was a 292 big 6 in a suburban I think about 1963 model. Later put.a.Motor Guard on his Plymouth Fury.left the full flow on that one. He pulled the dragster with the Suburban. When I left California it had over 350 Kmiles on it. Mostly with no oil drains.Frantz and Motor Guard said leave the full flow on until the warranty expjred. One thing people liked about removing the full flow filter is you always knew the condition of the engine by what shows up on top of the toilet paper. 0f course the old Motor Guards filtered from the bottom up. With the shorter paper it doesnt matter with the Motor Guard. Just make.sure you push the element down against the seal. The top loaders dont need a sleeve or wire ring. The Frantz doesnt need them if you know how to change the toilet paper. Years ago I was talking about the big Gulf Coast double roll filter on a Series 60 425 HP in a Peterbilt. Paul Abelson senior Field editor of Road King magazine asked for the phone number of the truck owner. They did an article on it and a Como filter. Thought I had given away my last magazine .Found one in with my repair manuals. October November1996. The advantage of the big roll Bounty towels is almost zero wear. The make up oil added at filter change is equal to a full oil change every 40 K.. 1t takes 5.5 gallons of make up oil when the Gulf Coast and full flow filters are changed.3 gallons when just the Gulf coast filter is changed. Oil analysis shows they could go farther.

At one time Frantz had a two port sandwich adapter. I still have a few. I used a couple of Frantz two ports for a Ford 3/4 16 threads. I put a pipe plug in one port. And a .025 orifice in the other I made from a wire feed welder tip.put them on my riding mowers. Gulf Coast juniors toilet paper filters and Ford spin on filters. They can also use Toyota or Chrysler spin on filters. Or of course Briggs and Stratton or Kohler. I might change the Scott 1000 in a couple of years.

I think the tube in the Gulf Coast O 1 junior is 1 3/8. The reason they don't need the sleeve is they have a much better seal around the core. It would be good if you had a friend with a lathe that could make you a decent seal up to 2 1/4". Thicker to compensate for the shorter tp roll.

Some people are using the Motor Guard compressed air filter for motor oil The M 30 is similar to the original lube oil filter. The ports are 1/4" pipe.instead of 1/8" pipe. You need to make an orifice. The internal parts are polypropylene.They will eventually go bad. They don't care what size the toilet paper core is as long as it isn't bigger than the seal. A do it yourselfer can make metal internal parts. Instead of two parts make one that looks like a Frantz tube. I put something at the top to keep the core from going all the way to the top and shutting off the oil. The tube doesn't need to fit tight in The core as long as the seal is big as the original seal. Haven't had trouble with the coating failing with motor oil. Sometimes it will turn loose of the aluminum in some fluids.It won't dissolve.

The big Fleet Guard was easier for me to convert to paper towels.I used the heavy paper towels The ones that you see in the machines. They filtered the same way as the stock element. From the outside. to the center. The same as the old original Fram. They were cotton the same as many LuberFiners. I think many truckers didn't like to deal with the messy filter riff changes. Cummins claimed a 80 percent engine life increase in some literature.I read. Most truckers would rather just spin on a filter Like most car owners they think the full flow is good enough. When Luber Finers first came out there were no full flow filters. The same as car Filters were optional equipment.

It is easy to convert a M 30 Motor Guard compressed air filter to filter motor oil. Open the filter remove the plastic parts. Press a 2 1/2 inch OD flat washer on the bottom. I was lucky and had a 1 1/4 inch ID flat washer. I reamed it a little so it would press on tight enough so it wont stick to the used toilet paper and get thrown away.because the new paper is shorter. Nothing is needed at the top. You will need to use a firm paper such as Scott 1000 so the core wont collapse. The washer is the core seal. The paper will slide in snug and make contact with the flat washer. On the Pontiac I used a Perma Cool universal 189 sandwich adapter. Now you have one of the best oil filters ever made.

One problem we had before the synthetics was the heat from the engine had to finish refining the oil. The filter had to remove the residue hopefully before it gummed up the rings and valves and filled the engine up with sludge. Some filters such as the Frantz and Motor guard could do it. One problem was many neglected engines were so sludged up the little filters would load up with sludge in less than 50 miles. Then it wasdo you want to change the toilet paper every 50 miles or open up the engine and clean it . The refineries do a lot better now. Some didnt do too bad then. One thing that helps inferior filters is the new oils. Less work for the filters. Also better ventilation.

The Luber Finer was a good filter. The advantage the Gulf Coast filters have is the oil has to pass thru a lot more filter media to get back to the sump. The factory installed bypass filter on my 41 Dodge was the same design as the Luberfiner. When John Frantz came out with an adapter to use toilet paper in the Fram housing the cleaning ability doubled. That was in 1953 I believe. Saw a picture of a Gulf Coast paper towel fuel filter for sale. It was open. Saw two things wrong. The towels were too small and the center nut was too tight. These filters are only as good as the owner.

The advantage the big Gulf Coast has is the oil has to travel thru 11 inches of filter media to get back into the engine. It's hard for abrasives to find their way thru that much filter media. With the Luberfiner the abrasives only need to get thru less than 3 inches.with the Fram on my 41 Dodge it was less than 2 inches of cotton. With the toilet paper filters its 4 inches compared to about 1/32 inch. With pleated paper. Of course with the double roll Gulf Coast filter its 22 inches. I once used the Frantz adapter that eliminated the full flow filter on a 292 big 6 belonging to a race car mechanic. It was safe for his engine because everything he had was pristine. Nothing big was in his engines oil. Lost track of it when I left California. It had over 350 K miles pulling a dragster. Probably over 300 K with no oil drains. He changed the Frantz and added a quart of Delo 100 20 weight about every 2 K. Before I left I put a Motor Guard on his Plymouth Fury. His oil was always an amber color like mine. We always knew the condition of the engine by seeing what was showing up on top of the paper when no full flow filter was used. Frantz and Motor Guard both recommended leaving the full flow on until the warranty expired. Of course in the old days even very expensive engines had no full flow filters.

When John Frantz came out with the conversion for the old Fram housing it was similar to the newer Frantzs without the base and bracket. The 3 stackers. Were just a taller housing with three Frantzs inside. Rubber and steel washers separating the filters. Better to just pull out a roll of Bounty Big Roll paper towels.

6:55 - "why that is done that way" This is the only way it can utilize the engine's oil supply on a bypass circuit. Otherwise, you would need a dedicated pump to supply the circuit. The ultra-fine filtration systems MUST be on a restricted bypass circuit... due to their reduced flow capacity, and the simple fact you wouldn't want an entire system failure from a full filter. Otherwise, you not only risk losing flow/pressure, but would also have an unreasonable service interval.

The fellow that introduced me to Amsoil oil and Amsoil oil bypass filters on about five cars that he owned on some he hadn't changed the oil in 10 years. He knew the oil was still good crazy because he use scientific oil analysis. Blackstone is the name of the oil analysis laboratory I believe it's the only way to tell if your oil is still good or not. There is also blotter paper that is used for conventional oil you put a drop on it and it spreads out and you look at a chart to tell you how good the oil spill is I don't know if they're around anymore or not

The Frantz came out when virtually all TP was 1 1/2 inch core. Other filters allowed for the bigger cores by putting bigger core seals at the bottom. They didnt bother with the center tube. Jackmaster eliminated the center tube. They use the TP core as a center tube. The Gulf Coast junior also has a bigger bottom seal. The center tube is there but isnt there to seal the core. I think it is about.1 3/8 inch. Frantz got left behind. If you can find 1 1/2 core paper and know how to install it or you use the Frantz elements you are OKAY. The top loaders with the bigger core seals its a matter of pulling the used element out and sliding the new element in. Some of the new paper is getting smaller with the cores getting larger to save paper. The paper changes the Frantz doesnt.

At one time the Motor Guard was the best you could buy. They only make compressed air filters. The M 30 is similar to the origional lube oil filters. Actually I like them better. To save some money and have one of the best small filters ever made. Remove the plastic parts. Find a flat washer about 2 1/2 inch OD. With a inside diameter that will press on the bottom. Like the plastic piece you removed. All you need now is a 1/16 inch orifice at the inlet. Since you have no center tube you will need a firm paper such as Scott 1000. I normally use Great Value 1000 from Walmart. The Australian Jackmaster Classic is just as good. Thats another nice top loader. Push the roll down against the seal and put on the lid. Another of my favorites is the Gulf Coast junior. They are out of production.

The Gulf Coast paper towel filters will easily clean oil better than the Luberfiner for a simple reason. The orifice is smaller and the oil is traveling thru a lot more media. About 4 or 5 inches against 11 or 22 inches with the gulf Coast. With the factory installed Fram cartridge filter on my 41 Dodge it was 2 inches of soft cotton against 4 inches of firm toilet.paper in the Frantz adapter for the Fram housing.

The Luber Finer was a very good filter. If you use the best elements which were cotton or the chopped newspaper ones.the pleated paper elements are available but won't clean the oil. About 20 years ago I was in California. I have an interest in oil filters and watched for them. Kaiser gravel trucks had them. Most dump trucks and mixer trucks had them. Too many think they are only for dirty conditions. Not true. Most of them are bolted to the frame. All heavy duty engines are equipped for bypass filters. Did a fleet of Ford Power strokes.The 7.3 is set up for bypass filters. The 6.O isn't.I put the Gulf. Coast filters O 1 s on the frame.

Not many people think compressed air is supposed to.get dirty and wet.The oil filters didn't sell well .The compressed air filters did. I tried to bring them back but the company wanted no part of it The air filter parts will fit the old lube filters. The Scott 1000 will work fine in the Motor Guard It was nice in the old days when the paper was a standard size. it is what it is My cars use converted compressed air filters. The Frantz is another excellent filter. Many are.not economical or effective.

I still use the Motor Guard to filter motor oil ATF and gasoline and diesel.It was the best of the toilet paper filters.The Scott 1000 works fine.push the paper down against the bottom seal. The oil pressure will compress it. The same as the Frantz. The problem with the Frantz is most people that own them don't know how to change them. If the initial seal isn't made at the bottom around the core the oil will go around the seal.The best place for the ring and sleeve is in the trash can .I remove the plastic parts from the. Motor Guards and put in metal parts. I have a few Gulf Coast 01 juniors .They filter better than the big paper towel filters because toilet paper is more dense.Gulf Coast does a lot of off shore rigs.It would take a lot of toilet paper filters to do a locomotive engine on. Shell oil rig.

I have seen the orifice at the inlet and the outlet on the Frantz.I prefer the orifice at the inlet. I like to use a wire welder tip. .025 to make an orifice. The slower the oil goes thru the better the filtering. I put the orifice at the source on the engine on the Pontiac Torrant. I didn't need an orifice because I used a Perma Cool universal sandwich adapter that I got from jegs. I screwed on a Wix Toyota filter. The adapter takes 3/4 16 threads like a Ford. Chrysler Toyota. These adapters have a pressure and return. Work better than the old Frantz 2 port sandwich adapter. The problem is they tend to not let air up into the filter.You need to install a drain valve for the Frantz. Sometimes you can loosen the tee handle just enough to let the air in on the Motor Guard When the filter is still hot to drain it.
@ralphwood5114
@ralphwood5114 5 жыл бұрын
I started using the Perma Cool universal adapter with both hoses hooked up to the adapter. That doesn't need an orifice because all of the oil is going thru the full flow filter. It works fine but the adapter won't let the Motor Guard drain. It is similar to the old Frantz 2 port sandwich adapter. I changed it to a 1 port sandwich adapter by putting a pipe plug in one port and a restrictor in the other. I returned the clean oil by drilling and tapping under the fill cap. Did both cars that way. The same as the lawn tracters.On the lawn tracters I returned the clean oil thru the drain port. It is always good for air to enter the filter and let the filter drain so there is no mess when changing. The tractors won't drain but the Gulf Coast juniors I can crack the lids and let them drain. I normally only change them every year or so.

Some say oil gets dark because of heat.I don't find that to be true with the oils I use. Some additives will get dark.At one time Frantz had a list of oils that didn't have additives that got dark. An example would be Chevron Special that had an ashless additive that got dark. The Chevron Delo was golden When clean. When you are selling the filters and someone asked to see your dipstick it better be golden. All gasoline engine and diesel engines generate soot. Some is so small it can go thru even a roll of Scott 1000. It is non abrasive but will turn the oil black. It is like ink. It happens fast in a diesel.If you could filter the black out you could filter the red out of ATF. It ain't going to happen. The oil in the Pontiac Torrant looks like dark honey. The oil in the Nissan Altima looks like light honey. I suspect the Nissan is generating a little less soot. I had toilet paper filters on the propane lift trucks at work. The Delo 400 15-40 always looked the same as new. No one is going to tell you your ATF is dirty because it is red. Black is the same.

In 1959, Skipper K. Yee and Lois, his wife, bought franchises for Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. They found this plan of selling was not good enough. Skipper wanted to pattern the Frantz Company to operate as successfully and in a manner as his wife's cosmetic business. They persuaded John Frantz to organize and put the present selling plan into operation. Skipper was elected President of the company in 1960 and present selling plan was put into operation. In January 0f 1961, there were over 3,000 distributors in the U.S.A. between 600 and 700 of these were in Southern California. The company operated much like a pyramid system of management. As SKY Corporation grew, there were thousands of distributors and over a million Frantz Filter systems manufactured and sold throughout the United States and around the world. Various sizes and styles were available.

It is best to use both the full flow and the bypass filter . The advantage of only using the Toilet paper filter is you know the engine condition by looking at what is on top of the toilet paper when you change it. Also if the paper gets soggy you know you have a water problem. Rare in a modern well ventilated engine. These filters are for people that understand how an engine works. They are not for non mechanical people.

The Fram bypass filter on my 41 Dodge Luxury Liner was virtually the same as the Luber Finer. Had the same element except it was a lot smaller. Used cotton. There were others such as Purulater and AC.Not sure about Ford. I think Fram was about the last to make cotton elements.sometime in.the 60s the almost useless.pleated paper.took.over. The gasket for the Motor Guard is 4 5/8" × 4 7/8" × 1/8" we got O rings from a bearing supply. I get them from McMaster Carr The T handle on the air filter is nylon. A rubber O ring works. I have tried Teflon but it is too soft. All I have now is Viton for the big O ring. I actually like the shorter rolls in the Motor Guards. Takes a lot of pressure to compress the Scott 1000 sheet.

One problem the Motor Guard had is.they pinch paper. Try to put an over size roll in and you get a midriff bulge.The halves are tapered. That eliminates a channel when dealing with a lot of water. Normally not a problem with motor oil. The main thing is to make the seal at the bottom. There is a step down there. I have been known to put shipping tape on the end of the paper like the compressed air elements. The original instructions said to fold the last sheet into a triangle.

The Motor Guard on my Ford 390 is over 50 years old. Not sure its necessary but I put a spacer in the bottom to push the tp core up against the top core seal to compensate for the shorter paper. The Motor Guard works better with the Scott 1000. It doesnt get the midriff bulge that has a habit of pinching in the gasket. The Motor Guard factory elements are very firm similar to Scott 1000 and the last sheet is taped. They are designed for submicronic filtration of compressed air. The origional Motor Guard lube oil Filters and compressed air filters filtered from the bottom up.

I dont know what is going on at Gulf Coast filters. I googled the Gulf Coast O1 junior this morning. I didnt recognize.the foreign language. The Jackmaster information suggested checking Gulf Coast filters and the Peterbilt with 1 million miles with 1 oil drain. Actually the one oil drain was caused by someone forgot to tell a Mechanic not to dispose of the oil. It was a Shell oil test truck. I think it uses Rotella and a Gulf Coast O2 filter. Road King Magazine asked me for the truck owners phone number. They did an article on it. There might be some partnership going on.. The Jackmaster is probably Australia's best depth bypass filter. The top loaders are the best because they are more user friendly when servicing them..No sleeves and rings needed with firm toilet paper such as Scott or Great value 1000 from Walmart.

When I bought my first Frantz I don't think they had any competition as far as filters that could clean oil and were economical. Now there are many that can clean oil most are still not economical. I gave up on routine oil changes many years ago. My cars get a filter change every 6k and a new quart of oil. In the 60s I changed the filter and added a quart every 2k approx. Engines were dirtier then. You will know I have lost it when I pay more for for a filter element than it costs to change the oil. A Amsoil guy told me their filters are less expensive because yo u can go farther between filter changes. There is a rule that can't be changed. The better the filter can clean oil and the smaller the filter the mire often it must be changed. Yesterday I changed my filter on the Altima. The filter was clean. The oil was clean. Why didn't I go another 6k. I think a little new oil is a good thing. Was doing every 12k. A Caterpillar lab told me I was pushing it too far. Recommended a new qt every 6k. What the hell. A roll of Scott and a qt of Platinum won't break me.Its a little messy. I have to remove the grill. There is the motor oil and the ATF. Both horizontal.Normally don't change the ATF.After the first change its clean.

You missed out on probably the best By-Pass filter system. Amsoil has had them for years and the best one taps into your full flow filter block and has both a full flow and a By-Pass filter in series, where the oil is encouraged to go through the By-Pass filter. I had one fitted for years but now there is not enough room in my engine bay. Of course, they made the lubricants to go with the filters.

+HJR I'm agnostic on Amsoil, they certainly have a near-religious following. Not cheap. What I don't understand is how the same bypass filter element sold by Amsoil can work effectively both plumbed between the feed and return on a full-flow, and plumbed between full pressure and zero ( return to sump ). IOW same filter element across a pressure drop of ~5psi and ~50 psi. What am I missing here?
@hjr9561
@hjr9561 8 жыл бұрын
guidoguitar There is a difference between cost and price. If you want cheap, buy the lowest priced oil you can but why put cheap oil in an expensive engine? I never saw the religious following with Amsoil in NZ like with Amway, and I was a dealer from 1985 to 2004, when they withdrew from NZ. I started with Mobil 1, then found Amsoil and their total range. I never made any money with it as I was a dealer mainly for myself. I first had a 6 inch cartridge filter then later changed to the Dual remote, where it has a full flow and a by pass filter on the same housing, with an adaptor that went onto the full flow mounting block. I also had their gear lube lifetime air filter. With a flow restrictor built into the bypass filter and a spring in the housing, as much oil as possible was encouraged to go through the bypass filter, which filtered finer, without compromising the flow of oil to the engine. I never had a low oil pressure warning light, and because of the way I serviced my vehicles, I never had a dry start. I was also able to use a much larger full flow filter than what would have fitted on the engine, so I increased my oil capacity. I also used 0W-30 oil, a lower viscosity than what was recommended, but I had a 14% reduction in fuel usage over mineral oil. I have never used mineral oil since 1985. I changed my full flow filter at six months and my by pass every year, and I used to change my oil at about 3 year intervals, or about 50,000 miles. On analysis of the oil, I found that the oil was still serviceable. I would still be using Amsoil, but it is not easy to get here. And I think it was worth the cost.
@wiredforstereo

I'm one of those near religious followers, and I don't get how they're supposed to work either. If they had two returns, one high, one low pressure, then yes, but they have one single high pressure line, so the path of lowest resistance rules. Also oil analysis on at least some engines shows them to be problematic.

The first Motor Guards were made in San Jose .ca. With the shorter Scott it doesnt matter except the oil has less paper to go thru. The oil does the compressing. When you change the Motor Guard you know you did good when the bottom puts a deep imprint on the paper. With the old lube oil filters the oil pushed up on the TP. I put a Motor Guard on a Beetle about 1970. The first change I had about 1/2 teaspoon of metal in.the bottom of the filter. I would tilt the filter so the metal wouldn't go back into the engine when I shut it down. they didn't come with filters.You changed the oil every 1500 miles then changed the engine. Think of the millions they saved by not putting filters on them and no one complained.

I think the original Amsoil bypass filter might have been as good as toilet paper but too expensive.I used to get yes they are more expensive but you don't have to change them as often. Found cotton waste and sometimes chopped up newspapers and wood chips. Dont know why the wood chips but they had a reason. Young guys dont have a clue .They think pleated paper cleans oil. Sometimes I watch these people showing.how to service a Frantz. It takes me about half a minute to change my Gulf Coast O 1 junior or the Motor Guards. At one time I bought Cummins Fleet Guard 750s from an international dealer. Same size as a Luberfiner. The spin on filters dont clean oil. They are a full flow filter with an orifice . The Motor Guard has some advantages.one problem is you have to be careful and not pinch paper in the gasket.You need a tightly wound roll and. Not too big.The old filters were designed with a lip that pulled the paper in before the gasket made contact. Motor Guard ha s their own elements now that don't pinch in the gasket. The Motor Guards and Frantz elements work fine. Many of the people demonstrating how to service the Frantz dont know how. Frantz has too many parts.I like the top leading Gulf Coasts If you need a positive one pass filter like for compressed air or fuel the Motor Guard is the one. For compressed air the Motor Guard is the only one safe to use.the important thing is the element.

I don't know if General Motors still sells the O 1 Gulf Coast filter. At one time the filter made for GM had the ports in a different location for mid sized GM trucks. The still used the Bounty. Big Roll paper towels It had a GM part number. I didn't realize how many of these are on the road. Gulf Coast Filters were Frantz dealers I personally think the Frantz 3 stackers was a better filter because they used toilet paper The 3 stackers were a mess to change. 2 of them on a 18 wheeler and a 6 pack of Safeway truly fine and you were in business.

My over 50 year old Motor Guards filtered from the bottom up. For the shorter paper i dropped a spacer in the bottom to push the core up against the top seal. The Frantz is obsolete now. When I saw my oil go from black to gold in 1963 I didnt nit pick the lousy design. About the only thing that fits the Frantz now is the Frantz elements.You can find 30 dollar toilet paper now to fit these filters.

not sure Gulf Coast Filters of Gulf Port. Still makes the O1 Jr. They mostly sell that model that uses Bounty Big roll paper towels. They do military, offshore rigs and that sort of thing. Shell oil Chevron over the road trucks.The O 1 Jr uses toilet paper.I read somewhere that NASA was having a problem with the purchasing department.Why are more than usual Bounty Big. Rolls being purchased. Gulf Coast is now required to cover the towels with some type of cloth and call them filter elements. The toilet paper models have a smaller tube than FRANTZ. They depend on the seal at the bottom.Its been awhile since I drove a truck.In the 80s there were 3 choices for the Luber Finer. Cotton waste, chopped up newspapers and wood chips.and pleated paper. The pleated paper wasn't my choice.The Luber Finer with the cotton elements were the same as the old Fram filters. Like the one on my 41 Dodge that used cotton before they were.replaced by the nearly useless Pleated paper.

In the old days all automotive filters were bypass filters. They were optional equipment. My 41 Dodge had a Fram bypass filter.They were far superior to the full flow filters. At some point automotive engineers decided it was better to remove the large abrasives from the full flow of oil to the bearings than to remove the smaller wear causing abrasives. Also the bypass filters were more expensive. About 1960 pleated paper filters replaced. The more effective cotton elements for the bypass filters. Frantz came up with a kit that converted the bypass canister to use the far superior roll of toilet paper.

I haven't seen the big Wix filter elements at O Reillys in 10 years or so. I got the Fleet Guard housings from a International Dealer When the owner passed the.son took over. No more discount What I was doing was converting them to take the big roll paper towels.The ones you see in the machines They have the.depth of toilet paper with the size for large diesel equipment.a lot better than the household ones such as Bounty big roll. You.can imagine what I had to do to duplicate the stock filter element.

I use Great Value 1000 from Walmart in my old Motor Guards. For the shorter paper I put spacers in the bottom to push the core up against the top seal. The old Motor Guards filtered from the bottom up. The new Motor Guards look like a new nickel. Mine are about 50 years old. They dont look new. Mine came from San Leandro ca. The oldest one has San Jose california on the top. Haven't used the Fleet Guard and Luberfiner 750 in years. You can get elements that are pulverized newspaper and wood chips or pleated paper. Not sure if the cotton ones are still available. The advantage of the Gulf Coast O1 is the oil has to travel thru 11 inches 22 inches with the O 2. NASA asked me for a propaganda package which meant information. They use the Gulf Coast filters now. They also use the big fuel filters. The government is into cleaning fluids such as antifreeze cleaning solvent aviation fuel hydraulic oil. It's not just Motor oil these days. The NASA engineer said the filters are only good for industrial use. Individuals dont keep equipment long enough.

We think of paper towel and toilet paper as oil filters for cars and trucks.The military has been using them for many things. Gulf Coast Filters supplies tandem axled trailers that have a bunch of paper towel filters and a pump. They can go down a row of Abram tanks for example and with clean all of the fluids. They have parts cleaners with paper towel filters. They have huge vats with cleaning solvent that is cleaned with paper towels. Saw a letter from a marine base in Japan. They go down a row of vehicles cleaning the coolant.They test the coolant and add what additives it needs. Years ago I saw a letter from Al Gore thanking Gulf Coast for all of the natural resources they are saving the government. Hope this isn't a military secret.Would you believe Shell oil has an instrument that passes current thru used oil. The instrument is zeroed on clean oil. They can tell by the current going thru the oil if there is a problem that requires taking the engine out of service. Other big drilling companies also have this instrument. I also have one but don't have the skills that an experienced engineer has.

A NASA engineer made the remark that these filters are only for industrial use.He said people dont keep cars long enough to make them worth it. I think he might be right in many cases. My Altima is a clean running car. It almost dont need a filter..In the 60s you could take the used toilet paper roll and squeeze the inlet side. Black sludge would.come out. Squeeze the out end and gold oil would come out.with the Nissan both ends are clean. Cut open the full flow filter and it is clean. I get to thinking the only.reason I'm changing the filters is to add new oil. It's a little different with the old F 250 with the 390.

Yes the big Gulf Coast filter is strong built. That's hydraulic cylinder tubing with I think is 1/2 inch bottom and lid. Saw one bolted to the top of the front bumper on a Army 5 ton. Probably as strong as the bumper. They are kick ass filters probably over built.

What keeps fibers from coming loose and going through the engine? How does the manufacturer prevent (Channeling) through the filter media? Toilet paper and paper towel is not made to filter hot oil. Nice idea, but would not trust one on my truck.

We will always have people that make assumptions about oil breaking down paper. Then you have the thinkers that put in line fuel filters. In the return line or put paper in oil to see if it gets stronger. After almost 60 years never had a problem with channeling with the tapered housings. Filtering fuel with a lot of.water can be a problem. If I had concerns about channeling with a Frantz I would use a Frantz element. I am a highly skilled journeyman paper squeezer. I know what paper to use.

@@JT-qf4it Sent a sample to a cat lab once. The 84 Subaru had 250 K on it without an oil drain using Mobil 1 and a Frantz oil filter. Changed the Frantz about every 4 July. They said the oil looked good for that many miles but I probably should change the filter twice a year and add.2 quarts of new oil. Normally I depend on th dip stick and my trust of my oil and filters. My Altima gets a filter change about every 6 months or about every 6 K. Using Motor Guards on the engine and transmission. Have to remove the grill to service them. Using Walmart synthetic now. When using the Subaru I was averaging about 12 K miles a year. Used the Frantz Motor Guard and Gulf Coast filters since 1963. If paper fibers migrated out of the filter I would have figured it out a long time ago. There have been AeroFrantzs used on light aircraft. Saw them on crop dusters 50 years ago. They used toilet paper. Some military vehicles have Gulf Coast toilet paper filters now. Saw one on a USAF hummer about 20 years ago. I think it had a GM diesel engine. Same as a chevy diesel pickup. When Dune Buggies and Hot VWs tested the Motor Guards in the 60s they put a fuel filter in the return line to check for paper fibers. Allowing oil to get dirty then draining it is sorry maintenance program. Filters are supposed to get dirty never oil. Actually I was talking about my Subaru with 250 K miles with no oil drains. A Caterpillar lab manager sent me a sample bottle.

It is true that toilet paper and paper towels are not made for filtering Lube oil. Before the Frantz 3 stackers the best filter you could put on a heavy duty truck was the Luber Finer. There was the Cummins Fleet Guard 750. Their best elements were pulverized news papers and wood chips or cotton. I dont claim these are designed to filter Lube oil..I have cut them open after servicing trucks. Cotton is as good as toilet paper if it is compressed. The factory installed optional bypass filters at one time all used cotton. There were no junky assed pleated paper spin.on filters.

About 40 years ago I went to Salt Lake city. My wife's sister had just bought a new Honda civic. I went to a Frantz Amsoil dealer for a Frantz and an Amsoil oil change. When she moved to Texas she wanted me to put air conditioning in it. I told her the body is rotted too much. She gave it to someone at church. I later got a call asking me if I wanted it. It had over 350k. On it. Most of the Frantz dealers that liked the Amsoil products had no intention of giving up the Frantz oil cleaners. That dealer in Salt lake had every filter Frantz ever made on display. A local Amsoil dealer told me he went to change his Frantz. He said the complete roll of toilet paper was missing. All of the roll of paper was in the oil system. He was pushing the Amsoil filters.

To eliminate the full flow filter with the full flow filter eliminater plate you need to know your engine.My Smart car has 143 k on it. It has no visible particles showing on top of the toilet paper.when I change the Motor Guard It has no full flow filter. on the Pontiac Torrent. I wasn't familiar with the engine. I installed the Motor Guard using a Perma Cool universal sandwich adapter and a Wix full Flo filter. The Motor Guard will keep the Wix clean.

The Australian Jackmaster Classic has no center tube. They use the toilet paper core as a center tube. To keep the core from collapsing you have to use a firm paper like the Jackmaster element or a firm roll like Scott 1000 sheet. The Motor Guard can handle the shorter paper. The old Motor Guards that filtered from the bottom up could use a spacer at the bottom to push up on the core. You need to get a good seal at the top around the core. I still have two Motor Guards over 50 years old. The Frantz is a terrible design but they will get the job done if you know what you are doing.. The top loaders are the better design.
@ralphwood8818

With the shorter paper the Motor Guard can't compress the paper. Then it is the same as the Frantz. The Motor Guard is tapered and sealed better at the bottom. Oil does the compressing. I used to pinch paper in the Motor Guard until I learned the toilet paper doesnt need to be tight because of the tapered halves Much better design. The Gulf coast jr is very user friendly. Looked on Gulf Coast site. Looks like they went to the knob clamp. My old ones have the over center clamp that Frantz charged extra for..

No one liked to change the messy Luber Finer. Also most truckers have been convinced that they are not necessary that modern full flow filters are better now which is B S. The Scott 1000 works fine in the Motor Guard. You are pushing the paper down in the tapered housing and against the core seal. The oil pressure does the compressing.I'm sad that Motor Guard stopped making the lube oil filters. The advantage to using the adapter that eliminates the full flow filter is every thing shows up on top of the element It is better to use both filters if you don't know your engine.

The Frantz and Motor Guard adapters that eliminated the full flow filter worked fine if the engine had not many large abrasives in the oil. The advantage of no full flow filter is you knew the condition of the engine by what showed up in the toilet paper. I put a spacer in my old Motor Guards in the bottom to push the core up against the core seal. The old Motor Guards filtered from the bottom up. Fixing the Frantz for the shorter paper is more difficult. The Frantz elements dont have the problem. The top loaders dont have the problem. Actually with the Frantz it's better to follow the old instructions. Push the TP down on the knee so the round end is down and makes contact with the core seal before the cannister is pushed down against the gasket. I always tossed the ring. Not needed with firm paper such as Scott 1000. The base does the same. Dont put the paper in loose or so tight you make wrinkles for the dirty oil to bypass the element. When you change the Frantz the used TP should have a good screen imprint on the bottom.
