You can't go wrong with either of these two filters! Both are used in more industrial applications than anything else. I've used both on the diesel fire pump at work and never had a problem!

The "Fleetguard" is interesting for several reasons. FG date code indicates it is made by M&H Purolator in Fayetteville NC 05/2022. Construction also looks like Purolator made. But, 98.7% @ 17.6 microns, IF true, a very efficient filter. Seems too good to be true. 98.7% is absolute number (Baldwin, 98.7%@40um). Because of silicone adbv, I'd choose the FG. But, neither is a readily available filter here, so unlikely I'd use either. Thanks for vid.

Baldwin for the win. My oil is much cleaner using Baldwin filters than any others I’ve ever used. They started out making filters for heavy dirt movers so I think they make filters more heavy duty

I've always been a fan of Baldwin filters, but I think Fleetguard wins in this comparison.

For a longer maintenance interval, I would want to use the Baldwin, shorter, the Fleetguard. It would also depend on the mileage and the number of particulates in the oil when at the end of its life. The Fleetguard would filter better for a shorter length of time.

The filter paper used by Fleetguard is fiber-filled, which can increase the holding capacity of dirt and provide better flow rate.

Both great american made filters. Both companies are well known in the diesel industry for making heavy duty filters. I would run either one but the fleetguard wins due to the filter media. Too bad it didn't have a coil spring!

Both really good filters. I have used Hastings/Baldwin quite a few times with no problem. My Uncles Trucking firm used Hastings/Baldwin for many years and never has an issue.

Finally got a good look at the 2 of the brands that probably cover the most of the industrial world of engine's... Something to be said about fleet guard being the only in house filter brand owned by a diesel engine manufacturer .. On some of my old antique tractor engines though it was Baldwin, Purolator and Donaldson for the OEM preferred. But everything after the 1970s was fleet guard .

Well done! I appreciate your filter vids. A thought: gasket measurements (height and thickness) and maybe even a durometer reading "might" be useful. Some Honda Element and CR-V engine fires have been caused by oil filter gaskets remaining stuck to the engine during oil changes. The tech then screwed the new filter over the old gasket, creating a double gasket situation. When run, the old gasket eventually would blow out. This caused oil to be sprayed on the nearby exhaust manifold and vehicles fires ensued. There was a class-action lawsuit, IIRC. Again, well done.

i have heavy equipment and i never have a worry with either brand .i like cat filters because of the way they hold the pleats open from collapsing with thier ribbons.If you service regular youll never have a problem any how.

I’ve used that exact B160 on my GMC 1500 for the last 3 years or so and it works great. You can get them for cheap at Govets which just drop ships them from Grainger.

I've been running the Baldwin 160 on my LS2 corvette. One of the things I like about it is has a fair amount of media. The Baldwin should flow more of these two. I'm sure the Fleetguard is a good filter it looks like it also has more media than the PF48 used on my LS2

Both nice average filters. Both have features I like. If you would put the Baldwin element, fleetguard antidrain back valve and Baldwin spring you would have a super filter.

These are both good commercial filters with only small differences. You see a much bigger quality difference between brands with automotive filters. Years of working in the field, Baldwin is by far the most common filter on commercial engines. The rental companies use them. Fleetguard is a popular truck filter.

I was a fleet mechanic for indot and creviston trucking for decades ! seemed fleetgaurd was the the more popular filter for the mail trucks Maybe because of cost ! indot used mostly napa gold because we had an account and bought in bulk ! Baldwin is also a fleet oil filter ! never had any problems except for 1 napa gold with a cross threaded base plate !

I think the Baldwin is the winner since it has a significant larger filtration surface area 🤷🏼‍♂️ With more surface area, the oil will experience less pressure in the filter, negating the slight difference in nominal/absolute filtration rating 🤷🏼‍♂️

I've been waiting for this one! The LF16242 is pretty close to the LF17531 I have a number of. The main differences I noticed right away are mine have a nitrile ADBV and a "button type" bypass valve at the bottom instead of the kind shown on this one. I do wish the LF17531 had the silicone ADBV as an option, though. I'll be looking forward to video on that if you get your hands on one of them.

Both decent filters for 3 to 5000 miles oil change intervals.Fleetguard would probably get the nod for my money.Interestingly last year i bought a fleet guard for my Ford Falcon and it still had a nitrile rubber adbv.So they must have just recently switched over. In Australia the Ford Falcon was in production from 1960 thru to 2016 both in 6 cylinder and V8.

I don't know. I kind of think the additional surface area more than makes up for the less dense media which probably helps marginally with flow vs capacity. Fleetguard has silicone anti drain back probably useful well below freezing. Overall they seem pretty equal.

Great video! These are both 2 of my favorites or go to filters, don't use the Baldwin much anymore but it is a nice filter. Used those when I had my Olds Diesels and was doing 2k mile oil changes. I really like the Fleetguard microglass media (all microglass). I've switched to the Fram Ultra, which is still a great value in spite of them cheapening it. The only complaint I have about the Ultra is that the XG-8 size that I use has smaller holes around the plate than most other filters (like Purolater). The Fleetguard I use is the LF3487. I bought a bunch 20 years ago and still have a stockpile.

Hi Vince, Thanks! My Explorer uses the XG8A also and I have the same complaint, (the inlet holes look too small for me). I like the Purolator Boss because of the larger elongated inlet holes also if you don't mind spending the money the Fram Titanium has slightly larger inlet holes and still uses the metal screen backing. I'm going to be putting on the Fleetguard LF3487 on my next oil change next month and leave it on for one year and make a video out of it with oil analysis. I only drive about 5K miles a year. @@WhipCityWrencher I think the Boss is a great filter too. I like the Titanium (better than the Ultra) my problem is it's almost double in price for basically the same filter. I wonder how much longer it will have the screen. The only reason they did that was because of the single layer media. I just can''t see Fram running 2 different specs and lines on basically the same filter. But, they might have to keep it if Advance is that picky about their specs. I wish they would just adopt that 'Advance' base plate for their other filters. I wouldn't even care as much about the screen as long as the media didn't crush or blow apart. I really like the LF3487. They aren't easy to find. I had to go to a heavy equipment parts house. That Microglass media is really nice. I think it's less restrictive that some other all synthetics. I really liked the Motorcraft FL1A for my driver 3k changes. Used to be $4 at WM. Last time I was there $10! More than the Ultra. Crazy! I saw your Explorer Odo roll video. Nice truck! I usually have a 'winter' car to keep my nicer vehicles rust free.

Hastings/Baldwin, WIX and Fleetguard are excellent filters. With the quality of todays synthetics compare to old skool conventional oil our power plants are lasting much longer. Pay up front for good PM, it's cheap in the long run.

Baldwin B160 is my filter I use on my pick up truck thank you for making the video. Never had problem with Baldwin. Not bashing Fleetguard but just because the filter media is woven tight doesn’t mean better filtration,but yes smaller particles it may catch but at a high restriction then Baldwin do to flow of oil flow restriction through a tighter woven media. More restriction equals less flow of oil , equals high’s oil pressure. Some one agree to disagree , it’s all subjective choose which brand you like and be happy.

If the Baldwin had a silicone anti-drainback valve it would be a better deal. The coil spring would be more reliable and the higher by-pass pressure means that more oil will be forced through the media. 12 pounds on the Fleetguard seems awfully low.

in my area, i see alot of baldwins on farm equipment engines & hydralic systems.perhaps its a cost effective alternative to OEM filters.they cant be too bad because when farmers need their equipment to function properly, time is their advasary.farming is a very time sensitive business.down equipment can cost them thousands in crop sales.

That Fleetguard appears to be made by Mann and Hummell, it is most likely identical to the Wix 57060. The more correct Baldwin would be B7443, both having the same bypass pressure. I use the B7443 on two different dodge trucks and they are great. I love your videos. Im an oil filter nerd too.

The weaker bypass pressure on the FG negates a big portion of the filter media thickness. The Baldwin is going to make sure the oil flows through the media for the life of the filter. In fact, the lower bypass pressure combined with the thicker media on the FG might mean a lot of oil NOT going through the media as it nears the end of its service life. I'm a retired farmer, and I have used both brands but somehow preferred Baldwin. Just my $.02.

Funny, you mention that. When I was looking at the FG specs over 20 years ago I called their engineering dept and spoke to them about this very issue. They said that the 100% Microglass media is a much more free flowing filter media even when 'thicker' than the cellulose. It would permit the differential pressure value of the by-pass to be lower because they engineer that value according to the media. It would also be effected by engine oil pressure, oil viscosity and temperature as far as when it goes in and out of by-pass. Back then it was a fairly novel concept having 100% synthetic media, now it's commonplace. I think the Boss is comparable.

Thanks Vince, I hadn't considered that the media composition was, or could be different. I was using farmer logic (not sure that's a real thing), in my thinking. Different media, different viscosities, different oil base (synthetic, petroleum), will surely have an effect on filter performance. I'm 73 and retired now, but back in the day I spent many hours running tractors, combines, swathers, semis, dozers, you name it. I was always looking for the best protection of those engines, and was blessed , or lucky, (I prefer blessed) to have only one engine failure. That wasn't a lube issue btw, professional mechanic mistake. Thank you for a new line of thought, take care.

@@user-pk2fg8im4u Hello Sir, Nothing at all wrong with your logic! Farmers are some of the most inventive, innovative and ingenious people there are. I would trust a farmer over some engineers. The fellow that invented the Cathode Ray Tube, which lead to the invention of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, came up with the idea while plowing rows in his field. I don't believe he even had any formal engineering education. I think as long as good maintenance schedules are adhered to the differences in filter choice is less important. I used to use Baldwin a lot on my diesel Olds. I'd get a case from the heavy truck parts shop. Take care!

FleetGuard is a better choice .. it has enough filter media for the size of the canister housing the main benefits are its filted rating of 98.7% at 17.6 micron is almost an absolute rating vs the Baldwin nominal rating at 18 microns and a absolute figure at 40 microns meaning 99.9% at that rating.. i would definitely go with better protection, smaller particles suspensioned in the oil vs higher compacity which won't make much of a difference based on the class of filters in Normal recommended service intervals .. plus the Baldwin allowing much more larger particle through didn't even need that much more media as it's doing way less work but people want extended service intervals

There's another youtuber I was watching, his oil pressure went up around 100psi, higher when he hit the gas. They were trying to find out why it was so high and noticed the oil filter had ballooned but didn't break/explode. Have you seen that before? First time I ever saw that. It was a typical metal cannister oil filter.

Fleetguard is better imho... Better filter media (thicker, composite material combining two types, longer) Better anti drain back valve being silicone vs nitrile. Longer pleats higher micron rating 18.7 microns etc Also Fleetguard filter media is thicker as well. Fleetguard is the superior oil filter 👍

That got ugly I'd like to see some more testing on the Fleet Guard. Both filters look pretty good and no metal shavings or excessive glue. Note Fleet Guard did supply Pete with a Data Sheet which tells a lot about the company's character

If you want to get an accurate wall thickness you need a ball/tube micrometer. Calibers are flat and can't measure a round part.

Here in the Baldwin is a filter with an orange canister that is using the coil spring. They must not have read the Fram website!

I would probably buy the cheaper one that had the cleanest threads and neat glue job. I wish I could see inside. Maybe one day we'll have a pencil "x-ray" for like $49.99. haha. Anyway Baldwin will win the flow test here. More surface area is nice. But the glue looked like a qc fail

No Contest !! The FleetGuard is the clear winner: Silicone ADBV; Larger Surface Area; Microscopic View. Baldwin STILL pays the Coil Spring penalty (shorter element with less area, and heavy cannister). I would run the FleetGuard for 5,000 miles -- and leave the Baldwins on the shelf.
