You've convinced me! I'm going to get back in the habit of videoing my sessions. The example of retrieve really got me. I've been struggling to go through the bring me program for a year now, and I don't think I videoed a single session. The recallers coaches have been waiting for me to do this for weeks now. You got me! Thank you for everything!

I often do quickies throughout the day. Since they’re spontaneous taking a video isn’t possible, or is it? This has inspired me to set up tripods in a few locations so I can be ready for training. I recognize the value just needed the “push”! Thank you, Susan and Dogs That team for being there.

Thank you Susan, I needed to hear this. I think you train me as much as you help me to train my dog and I love that. Whilst I won't video our training out on walks etc (some of this is necessary to help overcome reactivity) I have no excuse not to video home sessions, and realise how much it would speed up our learning (which is currently rather slow). I aim to become one of your 50%-ers and help you to achieve your goal by achieving my own 😍

I have not videoed any sessions. Neither has my daughter who does most of our training. I struggle with everything and the puppy I now have wasn’t what I chose for my life and I’m already overwhelmed. I had an accidental litter of eight from the rescue dog that came, and then, for some reason certain people in my life thought that a puppy would be a good idea for us. I thought they wanted me to die. Actually, I’m going to survive and so is the puppy!

I video occasionally, especially when reaching out to a coach, but will now make it a routine. Taking the time to set up has held me back from being in the moment. NO EXCUSES! No longer an option. Recallers in an awesome course that I’m not taking full advantage of when I skip this step. I’m thinking about having some pre-established camera stands set up, in addition to the one I purposefully bought, to quickly access. Your cardboard tube idea will make that easy to do. Thank you! Tulah and Olive thank you also.

Susan you have become my conscience. I joined the Recallers program to train my stray rescue. I’ve never taken a stray into my home. I have always had pure bred pets that came pre packed with some training so they seemed to have an understanding of what was coming. However, the only training I knew or was taught in puppy classes was the “manufactured consent” form of training you mentioned in a podcast. I am now retired and have more time, although I’ve got to say I have no idea where it goes, and when I took Stevie into my home, I decided I wanted her to have the best life possible, which I believe comes from being a well trained, content, and happy puppy. I have never videoed a session. The kicker is I was a professional photographer and videographer at a major global corporation so I have all the gear and I have all the skills and still I never videoed a session. Starting today, I’m going to make the commitment to Stevie to videotape at least one training session a day. And as we get into that routine, I will start videotaping all of our sessions. Thank-you for your inspiration and all the phenomenal content you have in the program and for free on KZbin.

My only real excuse is that I am in a constant battle of having any free space on my phone. I don’t subscribe to monthly backup apps, but do back up my content manually to a hard drive. Yet I still find it hard to delete and make space. Out of sight out of mind- all my backed up content is ‘lost’ and not easy to access. It’s like a junkyard of photos and video. 🙃 I’ve become so attached to what I have left. 😅 I can get 10GB chunks free, but it’s amazing how one training session can eat up most of that. 😢
@PamelaDalmatian13 күн бұрын
I only now finished watching this. You certainly inspired me! I just spent about ten minutes training, and took a minute to set up a tripod and take a video. I can’t wait for part two. I can imagine where you’re going, regarding peoples emotions stopping them from taking a video. I can think of a good correlating reason in favor of taking video. Training our dogs should be fun, for both our dogs, and ourselves. When our dogs are thinking and being shaped, they can be incredibly funny and smart. It’s a gift to yourself, to capture that. I said. It is a gift to yourself, to capture that. You won’t be sorry. ❤

I’m one of those not videoing my dog training sessions. Your recent podcast, however, really made me pause and reflect on why that is. Truthfully, it mostly comes down to laziness and a sense that it wouldn’t be valuable. The handful of times I did record a session, I didn’t know what to look for or how to adjust based on what I saw. Despite watching your podcasts and being a member of HSTD, Wag Nation, and Recallers, I’m still struggling with my pup (who, incidentally, is about two weeks older than your Prophet). That said, I’m ready to accept your challenge! I’ll start videoing my sessions and take a closer look at what’s happening. Thank you for the encouragement and the constant inspiration. -Vicki

I never videoed before joining your online classrooms. But I’m in the “less than 50%” category. My barrier is I get bored watching the video! If I have it going the whole time, to watch it is then double the training period itself…and frankly I get too restless watching. I only video when I’m really struggling, and want to ask for advice from online coaching. For those, I spend a surprising amount of time editing it down to a clip that is representative. I’d like to make it into the ‘video most of the time’ category, but right now I don’t see it happening.

It's a huge mental barrier...I took a firearms safety course years ago. On the exam, there was a Q about crossing a fence with a shotgun. What is the safe way to do that? One of the choices was - unload the shell/s, go over the fence, reload. I KNEW that was the correct choice but my brain said OMG, planning an ascent of Mt Everest would take less mental effort, that answer is so laborious....no, pick another option and I did and got that one answer wrong but a perfect score otherwise. That is how big the mental struggle is. Probably ADD. But I hear the message, believe the message and will work harder on driving my ice tool into the couloir taking one step up....

I wouldn't know where to put a cam, since I use the whole back yard, plus the 12 acres of our property backs up to a large wetland, full of turkey & deer. There are no fences anywhere. I cannot take him outside without either a lead or his Ecollar, because I have nightmares of him running after something & I never get him back. Or finding him dead from the coyotes. Yes, I use an ecollar & I hate using it but he's too over reactive to triggers. Sarge is a 30 lb Jaghund, or German hunting terrier. I started out thinking I could train him to be a service dog for me. He'll be 7 this May, and I'm still working on basic obedience training. He breaks training commands constantly, UNLESS I have his favorite toy. Then he's as snappy & on point as you could imagine. But if I take off the collar, Mr Hyde comes out. Because he knows I can't enforce the commands, so he doesn't need to behave. Just putting the collar on is enough. I don't usually need to use it. But I need it to be available, because once his prey drive engages he doesn't hear anything but run faster. If he sees a squirrel or we flush up a deer, he'll be 100 ft/30m away before I can say anything. No warning, just gone. I suppose I'd have to carry the phone/cam with me for training, but then I have to focus on that as well. The recorded info would be valuable, but not worth the frustration of collecting it. 🤷♂️

Susan, I love you, your philosophy, all your dogs, etc. I fall into that category of only occasionally having done a video of my training. I do believe in the value, and the coaches on Recallers certainly have helped me. BUT... my dog (11 month old lab) eats (OK, chews, eviscerates) things. You name it, she chews it. Especially if she hasn't got enough exercise. This includes going after the tripod and the phone, which means I have to go through MANY planning steps to set it up to avoid being put in the position of having to rescue my camera or tripod from her jaws. Great game, mom! The vast majority of my training is "quickies" not formal, planned set up... and... I get discouraged with my own performance. Asking Ember to wait for me to set up the video really frustrates her. We are seeing progress, even without the videoing. I have come to accept that my progress will be slow. Heck, I'm over age 70, lots of things I am working on are slower than the average bear. Given I don't have a planned session? Guess what? I'm not setting up a video. I am playing games and bonding with my dog. So yeah, definitely less than 50% of the time. Am I willing to try to do it more? That's a solid "Maybe". Emotional barriers? I'm waiting for THAT podcast!

Have you tried playing ityerchoice with the camera? It's helped me wonders to put my ityerchoice hand in front of things I don't want my dog to chew, she backups a little bit and waits for the treat, then I can redirect into a game.
@OneKidsMom40415 күн бұрын
@haventli I have not. I shall have to give this some thought as to how I can make this happen. Fair warning, she has already "eaten" two TV remotes. I cannot afford losing a phone to her.
@haventli15 күн бұрын
@@OneKidsMom404 If you are very nervous, you might consider putting your phone (or remotes) inside a container while you train the behavior. A leftover container with a clear lid? Then maybe outside the container but with the lid on top. Finally with it unprotected, but only after you have confidence your pup understands the itsyerchoice game with things you leave on the floor. I've trained itsyerchoice to include my foot hovering over the item (I have a very small, fast dog, that steals things like shes the Flash. I don't have time to bend down to save a dropped piece of food or small item.) Something like that might give you more confidence. Best of luck!
@haventli15 күн бұрын
@@OneKidsMom404 Maybe it goes without saying, but you should teach itsyerchoice with low value items first. It might be many sessions until you have the behavior trained enough you want to risk your phone even in a container. Maybe start with a treat, like Susan's videos show. Then move up to a piece of bark or a small stick from outside, something you don't care about and isn't going to hurt your dog. Then maybe a low value toy of your dogs, one you bought but they never really liked. Then maybe a toy they kind of like... and so on until you feel comfortable training on things you value. In the mean time you make sure all the items you care about or that are dangerous for your dog are put away (sounds like you are already the master at this!) This is managing the environment until the behavior is trained.
@OneKidsMom40415 күн бұрын
@@haventli IYC for leftover container would have to be trained first. She likes to steal these out of the dishwasher and shred them. I use the dishwasher lid as if it were a crate door for games to manage that, but we're not perfect at it yet. Patience and persistence as we train! It's all about priorities.

I'm definitely a non videoer. Not because I don't see the value, but because I rarely do formal training sessions. I pretty much train whenever I'm interacting with the dog on the fly, and mostly when we're out walking. It just seems like too much, especially with the snow and cold right now. I'd love videos, but in the moment can't deal with the fiddling with the technology to get it to work. I need a personal videographer to follow me around, lol. I guess I figure if the dog gets it, I'm doing it close enough. I don't have any big goals for my dogs. Just basic politeness and to make their life more interesting. I think I'm succeeding at least in the interesting part. Impulse control still needs work. Susan, I do love your training though, and recommend your programs to everyone I know looking for training.

There are things I’ve made an effort to teach and have given treats, however, there are words my dog has learned through repetition that I have never treated and he responds to as quickly as if he expects a treat. So, I think he has learned to just do what I say in general. Do you think that can be true?
@haventli15 күн бұрын
It's likely that your dog found something rewarding after you said the word that caused the to anticipate a fun thing after the word, there by learning the word. Maybe a belly scratch or some kind of play? Susan and team often reward their dog with a game of tug. In fact Susan's whole concept of transferring value is the deeper understanding of how to make things rewarding for your dog, not just treats but all sorts of things.

I have tried videoing, and for me it wasn't right! I think for some people, maybe most people, videotaping is helpful, and for some people it is counterproductive. I'm autistic, so I interact with most creatures a little differently than other people do. I am extremely aware of all my manners and actions, and the manners and actions of the dog, because that is how I learned to interact with other human beings, through learning, not intuition, and it carries over into how I train dogs. In a way that makes me really good at some aspects of dog training, like knowing exactly what I said and did, but in some ways, it is a big hinderance to my dog training. I get so bogged down with the details of a moment that I fail to see the forest for the trees. A normal brain will delete a lot of information as you process your surroundings, and that is for a very important reason - it helps you to interpret a situation, rather than just sit through it like it's a bombardment. THAT mechinism is what I need to practice in order to become a better dog trainer. When I play back a video of myself, all I can see is MORE unimportant details to get stuck on. You'd think seeing it again would help me see it with a new perspective, and have a better interpretation of what happened, but that's not the case. Watching it again, my brain does the same things it did when I experienced it the first time, except it gets even MORE hung up on details, and my understanding of what happened gets even FURTHER from reality. For someone like me, videotaping is very counterproductive, instead I need to do the opposite thing - the thing that helps me is to have a teacher with lots of experience, who is really good at interpreting what's going on. They watch me, and they can interpret what is happening, and tell me what stuff I should be ignoring, and which stuff I should be focusing on. That way my focus is narrowed, and I can understand and interpret things better. I save up for a long time, then a couple times a year I take a class, because dog training is super important to me and having a teacher helps me get exponentially better.

@Aaalllyyysssaaaaa Thank you for sharing your insightful experience! It’s important to find what works best for you as an individual, and it sounds like you’ve found a great solution with the teacher-led approach. (Julie - DogsThat Team)

I only video once in a while because it makes me uncomfortable

I have a great deal to comment on this but will try to be concise to avoid the TLDR. To help answer the question of why people don’t video, I wanted to share my own struggles. Earlier in my career, while I was supported by lots of people around me videoing, I was discouraged based on my own novice/poor performance. Over time, I just evolved to be more confident and don’t mind watching myself and my dog. So, I would encourage newbees to BE BRAVE! Second, it’s just hard to form a new pattern of behavior. I constantly have to remind myself to video. Thankfully I have a short checklist for training that reminds me that I need my iPhone and Tripod. But, even now, I will do a training exercise and end up saying, “You @#$#$ idiot. You forgot to hit record.” To that I say, be kind to yourself (kinder to yourself than I am) and just take it as a lesson learned and record the next one. Lastly, it does take extra time - time to set up the camera and time to review. All I can say to that is, “It’s worth it.” Listen to what Susan and Bob Bailey say about video review. Be mindful but also timebox yourself as not to spend too much time in analysis.
