Good work Captains. Having backup or redundant devices will cover almost every situation. Most importantly, always wear a lifejacket and unless your boat completely sinks (or burns) - Stay with your boat.

Kudos to infinity. You two are superstars! Thank you! Here's a few items that you might consider from an ex-Medic: 1. Chemlights (cyalume military grade, last 12 hrs, shake and bake, $2 each). 2. Head lamp with strobe mode and red light (keeps hands free and night vision intact). 3. Paracord (useful to keep folks and gear tied together, make a ladder or even a mesh gear cache) 100 feet is 3 x 5 inches, or a Paracord bracelet for small jobs. 4. Hand fishing kit ($10 on Amazon). 5. Cell phone waterproof case with lanyard. 6. Medical stuff: a. Quick clot b. tourniquet (cut up some old resistance bands) c. Tiger balm for wounds and burns or vaseline d. derma bond (liquid suture) e. straight needle suture material 2-0. Also, a question, I have 2 ditch bags (one with everything, and a quick evac go bag). Both have ACR PLBs which I take everywhere dangerous: backcountry, climbing and to my in-laws. However, I am not convinced that a boat connected EPIRB offers and advantage over the PLB I wear at all times offshore. Do I need to add an EPIRB to my unsinkable Whaler?? Thanks!

Something often overlooked, practice with the items you carry. Don't let an emergency be the first time you light a flare, or a real fire be your training with the extinguishers you have. Use the expiring items for refresher training. Keep up the good work, ladies.

I would just add that instead of “make a mental note” print a list of all expiring items including electronics, medication, food, medical supplies, batteries, etc. Laminate it and attach to your ditch bag or post it in your boat. Every year when you switch out your unused water bottles and batteries, you check your list. If it expires this year, replace it. That way you have an easy to see way to verify the expiration date of everything instead of forgetting that some item expired 3 years ago, and now you are in the middle of the ocean with an unusable item. Emergency kits that you don’t actually touch or use until you need it, easily get forgotten about and time flies and you don’t realize it’s been 5 years and everything is dried out, expired, etc.

Very well done. Sea Dye makes a great addition to a ditch kit, as does and electronic SOS distress light. Those silver emergency survival blankets will not only provide protection from the elements, they also make great visual search targets, especially in sunlight. Beyond that they can provide a useful radar signature.

Pretty good video on an important subject. Towards the end when you were stressing the EPIRB was more useful than the VHF radio, you could of mentioned the EPIRB has significant range advantage and can call in help from way farther away than a handheld VHF.

I was on a drift boat out of Islamorada and could hear calls from the CG asking boaters to keep an eye out for a capsized boat. Dispatcher was asking if anyone knew what caused the boat to capsize. Seems that would be a good safety video... the five most common causes of capsized or sinking boats.

I live in the Puget Sound region of WA and too many people ignore the safety equipment. They get the mind set that "oh I can see land so rescue will be quick". Truth is, it is extremely difficult to find someone bobbing around in the water. Last November we had a Tulalip Police boat capsize and throw both officer into the water. This happened at night, during a windstorm. One officer was found alive after floating in the water for over 2 hours and was severely hypothermic. The other officer was never found. To this day they still haven't located his body. Had these officers been wearing a strobe (and stayed with their boat) the out come might be different.

I don't know if you'll see this or not. But you can also take big glow sticks and attach them to a long length of paracord and helicopter it over your head at night. It's a tip I heard from Nick Kefalides of Warrior 2 Bass guide service in Central Florida.

Make the ditch bag as light as possible. If it’s to heavy it may sink to the bottom when you throw it over. Full bottles of water sink. A full medical kit is nice but you need to practice in the water applying bandages and cleaning wounds may not be that easy. On my boat cruising I always use a kill switch tether. A boat can go down in 1 second or a slip over the side. I always wear my PFD with my PLB attached and my handheld on my belt. At night I like to have a green laser, the distance it shines and it gives a beam to follow right to me.

Have you amazing ladies considered contacting your local Coast Guard station, or Coast Guard Auxiliary to help out with safety topics? One of their primary missions is education and they would be more than willing to participate in a video with you. From general safety discussions, even demonstrations, to Federal requirements, they want to encourage education of everyone on and near the water. On the topic of a ditch bag, every Coast Guard crewmember carries on their person, at all times, 7 aerial flares, a day/night flare, strobe light, knife, mirror, whistle, and a PLB. That’s in addition to the extra safety gear on the boat.

This is a very thoughtful suggestion. There is nothing fun about being unprepared for emergencies on the ocean. It would also take some of the mystery out of the role of the US Coast Guard.

I'd like to add my vote to asking your local Coast Guard Station if they'd be willing to make a safety video (or maybe a series of them) with you. And thank you for emphasizing that VHF radio is line-of-sight. If you're in the water, or a raft or sitting on the bottom of your capsized boat, you are _ONLY_ going to get 2 or 3 miles of range to another boat (more if there is an aircraft looking for you). The same is true of Radar, I always laugh at the claim that a certain radar unit has a "48Nm range". Yes, it probably does, _IF_ that radar unit is mounted 28 feet 3 inches above the water and you're looking for a surface target.

@mikel9567
@mikel9567 3 жыл бұрын
Why would they need one, they already have 2 EPIRB's. The inreach is designed primarily to provide status updates, not to get help. To even use the SOS function you have to pay a subscription fee and it goes to Garmin who have to alert the authorities. It's also manually activated, not necessarily something you want if you're abandoning ship. Garmin doesn't even really advertise it for marine use, it's mainly for hunters and hikers. It's got some good features, but users have reported the SOS feature to be problematic. If I'm going offshore, I want an EPIRB not an Inreach.

Great video. In Europe in the Adriatic region is mandatory to have a VHF license if you want to rent a boat over 12m long. I assume you both also have that license too. If you don't have it then I'm willing for free to give you all information on how to use a VHF radio to make a great youtube video. I think it would be very useful for everybody since it can save your life. Now if you already have a license then you can do the entire video only about VHF. How to check it in the dock if it works before you "hit the sea" - which channel to use for that. What is channel 16? What is DSC call. Like holding the red button for 5 seconds. When to use MAYDAY call and how you do it, what procedure to follow. How to do a PAN PAN MEDIC call or SECURITE call. How to cancel a distress call. Or how to do a distress call for someone else. You know, MAYDAY RELAY. Ohhh and you need to know a phonetic alphabet. How to check a weather forecast on VHF. You can simply ask for it or there is a certain time on CH16 when they say it regularly daily. When using phonetic alphabet please say Uniform for letter U don't miss it with a Unicorn :P You can also explain an MMSI number on VHF radio. U know if you want to call your friend on another boat via VHF then you need to know his MMSI number in order to call him directly or know a procedure on how to do it via CH16 where you'll contact everyone. The captain actually asked me that question on the exam. I was expecting to do a MAYDAY call or something but then he said: "Call your friend and ask him to have a fish for dinner with you, the boat is rented so you don't know his MMSI number. Do it via CH16 and ask him to change the frequency plus choose the correct frequency for that reason." I kinda struggled with that one but I made it at the end. Who plans to use VHF for a date, well you never know :) Golf Alpha Lima Echo Foxtrot Oscar Romeo Charlie Echo... :) Unicorn LOL, I bet someone will throw that Unicorn in CH16 someday I swear it will! :)
