Survival GEAR YOU NEED for the UNEXPECTED may have sounded like a crazy title two years ago. But, emergency preparedness has become a hot topic in the past year and few months. Many overlanders already have survival gear on our OVERLAND RIGS. Most of it is essential CAMPING GEAR and EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT that we use on all of our OVERLAND 4x4 WILDERNESS ADVENTURES. Some of us take it for granted, while others may not even have thought of this gear. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS, FOOD STORAGE, and SURVIVAL GEAR are, frankly, just a part of most people's OVERLANDING kit.
Some refer to this GEAR YOU NEED as a BUG OUT BAG, a GO BAG, SURVIVAL KIT, or even "EVERY DAY CARRY" (EDC) bag. Regardless of what you call it, every OVERLANDER should think of their OVERLAND RIG as a "Plan B" when the UNEXPECTED EMERGENCY happens. We believe this mindset is crucial for the SURVIVAL of you and your family when the UNEXPECTED happens- regardless of whether it's human-made or a wake-up call from mother nature. You should always BE PREPARED! #survival #gearyouneed #bugout

Saw the fishing pole right away but missed the 870 in the shadows. The shotgun is also self defense from predators (2 legged and 4).

a fishing rod is great, but a trotline can catch fish while you are out hunting with the 870.

The chocolate thing is so true. I went to a winter warfare instructor course in northern Sweden a few years ago and I had a guy that went with me that went completely internal and was ready to crawl up and die. I talked to him, told him I wouldn’t let him fail and gave him the rest of my chocolate and he ended up making it. And seeing him reach down and make it made me feel better so it took care of me on the back end

Great Video subject. Last year my wife's daughter was forced to evacuate due to the fires in CA. So for Christmas I gave to my son and my wife's children a "Bug Out" bag (Carry on size luggage purchased at a box store) that included the following: Roll of quarters (to use at coin laundry mats) Atlas, for the state they live in Flashlight and batteries Flashlight (Headband style) First Aid kit Pain reliever (Bayer, Tylenol, etc) Toothbrush and toothpaste Games for the kids 24 bottle case of 16oz bottle water Box of Ritz crackers Dried fruit Large bag of Pistachios Box of Granola bars Large jar (plastic) of Peanuts It was up to each family to include things like blankets, special medications, sleeping.bags, a supply of underclothing. Exterior clothes can be worn multiple times in an emergency or use the roll of quarters. Important paperwork was to be kept in a separate secure location, but easily accessible for emergency evacuation. As you pointed out, our jeep is always geared up and full of fuel. Again, great video, keep up the good work.

10:56 CB radio is not Zero in any way..... but yes a CB radio is way less effective than a HAM 100%, BUT Radios are small take a few different options. I carry a CB, a GMRS, and a HAM, and saving up for a sat phone. The HAM is the workhorse of the lot but having the maximum number of communications points is optimal. And the two biggest points on why it is important to have a CB is 1) On highway between locations Truck drivers use CB heavily, and you can easily call for assistance roadside in an emergency when in a location with bad coverage i.e. a valley blocking everything but a sat phone 2) back country Logging roads use CB radios heavily, if you are on an active logging road there will be a sign telling you what CB channel to tune into to get locations of other vehicles on those roads to avoid a head on with an oncoming traveler, and get information about possible hazards.

Very good information. As a ex-EMT I would instead of just carrying the first aid kits encourage people to get basic first aid training. Minutes can matter and having some basic training can make a big difference. I also have the D710G in my Jeep and carry the matching (old style) TH-D72A handheld which is basically the 710 in a handheld. Works great for APRS de KF3BH

Living here in Florida and being a retired deputy sheriff my truck has always been ready to go at a moments notice. We’re under threat of hurricanes about 4 to 6 months out of the year. Not to mention my entire circle of family and friends are scattered throughout the gulf coast. I’m always prepared to get my family out of harms way as well as get to others who may need my help after the fact. It’s nice to hear someone with a real world mindset bring up the subject. Well done. OB12513

Great video with great advice, Mike. Things don't always go with the plans and one must be able to react appropriately to the situation. I was fortunate to have received extensive training in emergency medicine and survival in the Air Force as an IDMT/Air Rescue Technician. I taught BuddyCare/Survival, EMT and CPR for AHA and the Red Cross. My Jeep SUV is one large survival kit with a comprehensive trauma kit I put together myself. Our bug out bags and get home bags have survival kits within the contents. The most important aspect of survival and providing medical assistance is training and practice. I'm proud to be a member of Overland Bound and with leaders like you this organization will only grow and prosper in experience.

Because I live in mountain ranges with distances between towns, my rig has been " bug" out ready for years. Doing errands in winter and just being stuck between mile markers up here could lead to an overnighter. Got all that stuff- med kit put together by me. My morale booster consists of chocolate granola bars🤠 Only thing that is a must have addition for me would be the personal beacon, which is next .

100% RIGHT YOUR GEAR MUST KEEP YOU WARM without the need for a heater! I keep 2 sleeping bags 1 rated at 30°F and a mummy rated at 5°F. You your mummy isn't rated that low you can slip the mummy bag into a regular sleeping bag. It will take you down to 0°F provided that you dry and are on a good insulating pad. If the temperature is borderline choose the cooler bag and move to the warmer bag if temperature dictates. It is much easier to warm up by doing a little exercise inside of your bag than it is to cool down after you are sweating! You never want to sweat or get wet for any reason.
@markcarpenter3600

Also, as tempting as it to bury your head into the sleeping bag don't! This will put water vapor inside of your bag and this will make you wet!

Lots of good info. My background was hiking trips and hunting trips, before getting old and getting into overlanding. Autocorrect is correct in always changing that to "overloading"..... but make sure you have a backpack as well in case you have to abandon the vehicle.

I don't carry chocolate in the truck, because the climate I live in would turn it to mush. However, I carry water, "Belvita" crackers, gum, jerky, and beef sticks with me, 24/7. I'm a virtual party on wheels with that. Rock on folks, be safe.

Would like to add a thought on ham radio. When in the backcountry I carry a small sportsman box with a Icom 718 HF radio, a 40-10 meter wire antenna, battery, and a fold up solar suitcase. Yes you do need a general class license to use. However this will get out when nothing else will work, remember Katrina. Rig is a 2015 Tacoma 4X4, shell, decked unit, and 10 ply tires. I know there is some money involved here but there is also peace of mind being prepared. I have pretty much what Michael mentioned. This is also a work truck and daily driver. However I do need to add chocolate to my list Joe WX7XX Hailey Idaho

You made a very important point I don't think enough people comprehend: The essence of a disaster is that the infrastructure is broken. Watching the North Bay fires, it seems to be power grid, road system, and phones, including cell phones. Another thing would be to pay attention. Weather incidents are the most predictable of our natural disasters, be paying attention.
