You might consider adding deployable decoys for the goose. You could then drop them in place on the ground and back up to give yourself something else for an attacker to focus on while the turret takes care of it. Or worst case... drop them and run for it. :D

I was thinking that too. During a run back to the base he could say "Deploy chaff" and decoys would pop out as he runs. ;)

Excellent episode once again. What's really enjoyable about this series is as a viewer, there is a genuine desire to see you succeed. Example... you say "going for a second load" and I get concerned about a possible disaster! Literally saying.... Nooo Splitsie! Don't do it! On your way back up to the base I'm thinking... A - Don't talk to us! For the love of heaven, just get up there safely, your going to get stuck.. don't tip.. don't tip... LOL and B - Why am I gripping my coffee cup so hard? It's just a SE survival video. LOL Conclusion..? This is exactly what a survival series should be. Great fun. Thank you!!!!

Wow, thanks Chris, that's really nice to hear :) I'm really enjoying making this series as so much of the story-like elements have come from the interactions with everyone watching - plus some of the funniest ideas in the base (elevator music as an example) :)

Talk about taking unnecessary risks. Going out to mine as the sun is going down is one thing, but when you realized that you had to stay and fight and there was a chance that you could take damage to the Goose, why didn't you park the Butterball in the mine? One less risk and a means to get home if the worst came to the worst.

Splitsie....why not add a rotor with a large grid head on it to the goose, that way you can set your turn table sensor to detect large grids only and wont have to worry about your other ships triggering it at all. Just set the range close to the ground and your rotor kinda low so the buttercup cant tigger it. Another option, put a small ship rotor head (on a large rotor OC)with a bock on your base where your sensor is now and put a sensor on the goose, then use your transmit and receive script to trigger the Command for the turn table, that way no other vehicle could ever trigger it :D. Also i play with the deep ores mod, :D tons of fun but be ready to really have to hunt for ores.

I may do a reset of the planet at some stage so I can incorporate the mod - then I'll still have to work out some way to prospect for the minerals and keep the challenge. Not sure what point I'm happy to do that yet, but it's something I've been thinking about :)

You need an LCD screen named LCD Autocrafting. You can then set the minimum reserve levels of all the components, and ISY will replace them as you use them. If you are going to need more plates or something for a project, just edit the text on the screen and ISY will do it's thing. Keeping one assembler with the string !manual in the name also helps.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The reason I haven't used the autocrafting yet is that my production rate is too low. At the moment I prefer the greater control I have over what gets built first. Of course once the big parts of the base are complete I'm absolutely going to be setting it up :)

Hey Splitse, I had an idea on how you might solve the driving-at-night problem (besides, you know, NOT driving at night XD ) - set up a bunch of waypoints between you and the base, then build a drone with a bunch of lights on it and enter the waypoints into its guidance system as a patrol route (I believe that will make it go A->B->C->B->A->etc, but you've had more experience with autopilot). If you find yourself about to drive home at night, summon the drone to you via the waypoints, then follow it back - autopilot always moves like it is out for a freakin' Sunday drive, so keeping inside its light radius shouldn't be too hard. If you want to get fancy, you could rig up a timer at the base to launch the drone when you push a button on the Goose's control console, and if you wanted to get REALLY fancy, you could set an action at the mine waypoint so the drone will automatically turn autopilot off and wait; then you don't have to worry about it running off without you. Extra points if the interior lights on the drone are on pistons so they can extend outward and increase the lighted radius, then collapse inward when the drone needs to fit back into its nest. Great episode. Looking forward to the next one :) Cheers. -Z

0:30 for the angled spots you could try using an advanced rotor to get the angle you need then a second one to go back to the default orientation so that the end could be merge blocked into place, that way your not having to go left right left right. 7:06 the only thing you need suit power for is tools and suit light, the jet pack will still work as long as you have hydrogen, it no longer requires suit energy. so the only issue you would have in that hole would be lighting you could still fly. 16:36 that is good to hear the small grid welders are useless currently so I will definitely be looking forward to that update.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know that flying in perfect darkness would be my smartest move, but it is useful to remember the pack still works without power :) I'm hoping it sneaks into the multiplayer patch but I think that's unlikely :(

yea flying in darkness only results in death, though when there is plenty of light around I often find my self with 0% power when doing a lot of welding, and luckily the riffle still works with 0% found that out the hard way.

Thanks for another great video Splitsie. As someone who has wasted far too many hours with deep ores and complex mining rigs I'd love to see how you tackle the problem. Two things to bear in mind though: while it can be hugely rewarding, it can also be equally frustrating - once you get more than a couple of rotors involved you have around a 98% chance of seeing your beautiful creation become one or more epic whirling clang-bombs. The other thing is, having seen what you have achieved with just one modest iron ore deposit, what would you use a larger one for?

So for the lights on the way back, what your going to want to do, since they will be bulky anyway, is a battery, a solar panel, an interior light, and a Gatling turret. This should be large grid. This will not only give you a clear path at night for whatever you may be doing, but also increases the amount of ease to defend yourself and the valley.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
That would certainly work, not sure if that much infrastructure is worth the effort though :/
@jasonwrathorn9281
@jasonwrathorn9281 6 жыл бұрын
I liked the suggestion of using the deep ores and building a whole mining base... that sounds like an interesting project. You might consider rolling in the 'lighted path' project with some additional large grid turrets, making small fortifications along your path at key points to mark where you need to go up a specific way. That would give you an extra level of defense if you need to make a run for it. They might also be able to stretch armored block out to either direction so you could use more of the smaller lights off the one battery/power grid. Also, it might not be a bad idea to do a scouting trip in here somewhere so you know where your next patch of iron is. It would suck to fortify the whole route and find out that it goes in the wrong direction or some such.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I've been expecting this iron deposit to run out for several loads now which was why I delayed building the lighting infrastructure, the irony of that is I'm probably going to put the infrastructure in just as it runs out now :P

Splitsie, I've used catwalks as a parking guide to correctly park my Nomad truck. Maybe do something like that to use as a bumper in the rear so you're not going too far. As for your mining area, maybe it would be a good idea to make a C.O.B, something like your bunker without the massive window. Plus, you'd be able to light up the mining area. Keep up the good videos, I've been on a Witcher 3 kick lately but watching your videos have me wanting to get back into SE.

Rly nice! :D That scene, when all the Sandbags fired at the drone, was awesome! :D I know it's a bit dodgy, but how about, a small battery, and solar panel, with some small armor block to make a pillar, and at the top of the pillar a small rotor, with a large rotor head, and a large interior light? It would almost look like a promenade light. Or you could just make a blueprint of maybe 4 lights on a single large battery with 7-9 armor block between them keeping it all together, and project it in a way, that the joining armor is underground, and only the pillars with the lights are above the voxels. A large welder should be able to weld them through a little bit of voxel. The other thing I was thinking about, you really need some LCDs with the battery status of your ships, next to their parking spot :D Just like you wanted with to do with the Tick's parking spot.

Regarding the conveyor system for the angled spots, if you don't want to zigzag your way into them, you could always use another advanced rotor preferably under the center of the turntable, and rotate it 45°. You'll be able to go straight towards the two parking spots in the corners, although it may be a little bit more difficult to setup the connectors at the end but I'm sure you could come up with an interesting design!

I was thinking, if you are still interested in fine-tuning the connector gantry for the Goose, you could switch where the Advanced Piston is, from the floor, to the top of the gantry right behind the corner piece. This would enable you to have the connector flip up parallel to the ceiling (which look be more visually interesting), and wouldn't have to worry about waiting for the whole thing to move out of the way of the turret.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The main reason I didn't do a drop down like that from the ceiling is that I would lose the ability to change the offset to get a lock if the suspension leaves the Goose a little bit low, it would look nice that way though

Hey Splitsie, have you thought about putting corner LCD's in front of the timer and programmable blocks with there name or function,so you would always know which one is doiung what and which one is free. Maybe this also looks good, maybe. An old idea is, maybe it would be good to place a status light red/green somewhere visible in the hangar to show if the turrets are on or off, only as a safety feature. Also Isy support LCD Output, so you have your Ore, Ingot and Componet Information on one View. Thank you for your videos, i love this series.

@jakal1988

As mentioned before ... you seem to forget about the poor chicken hawk for your defense ... it wasn't allowed to fly for a long time ;) Few more small ideas came into my mind: 1st Why don't you use the power in the Goose to recharge the Butterball. In the beginning it might made sence to create the exception in Isy's script but now where you have a proper Connector you could save alot of time and get 2 trips done a day. 2nd you could use some sandbags to create "gates" on the way back for orientation at night untill you come up with a better idea. maybe adding some white lights on those so you can drive from gate to gate. aswell it would create some protection if you don't see enemy drone coming before you start going back. 3rd As you were talking about mining bases i got thr idea of a dropable cargo/processing module witch can be moved from mine to mine either on a trailer of the goose or by any flying ship. Power supply could happen by battery modules you aswell mentioend moth ago that you are thinking about building new solar towers with battery modules before your solar tower got attacked. Hope you get what i mean cause i am struggling to get my thoughts into a proper text. Aswell it wouldn't be very usefull just somehow cool. Another small question. Can we get an updated save on the workshop? :) i would really like to try out some of my ideas there again ... even your solutions in the end are much better then mine.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't completely forget about the chicken hawk, but it does lack lights so it's not the best thing to fly at night :P I avoid stealing the power from the Goose as it is more wasteful for power - you lose 20% when transferring from one battery to another, so if I do that once from the base to the Goose, then from the Goose to the Butterball it adds up. Plus I'm terrified I'll leave the goose without power accidentally :/ I'm pretty busy this week coming with a course (which is also why my replies were late last week) but will hopefully get the updated world on the workshop next weekend or early the following week :)
@jakal1988
@jakal1988 6 жыл бұрын
Already looking forward to the new save :) If you would build your additional solar tower with battery modules there would not be any worry about the amount of power you lose ;) Even when you use the thrusters fully loaded you had still 29 minutes energy left in the goose in the video what is alot more then you would ever use especially cause the charged batteries from the butterball are adding energy again even there is a loss of 20% ... adding 2 more batteries to the goose trailer would leave you with alot more power. One battery can be switched off permanently so the connector can always be powered again and in case of emergency you could use a battery module you could connect to recharge again. even right now aswell i am not sure if you include the exception into the scrip in the goose aswell may it's batteries charge from the butterball at the moment. looking at the trailer again you could add 6 more batteries without changing the desing too much. that would leave you with being able to recharge the 4 batteries even with considering the loss of 20% and even leaving 1 additional battery for safety. maybe next time after mining have a look at how much power actually is left in the goose in percent. if it's still about 70-80% it means you already have alot spare energy
@peters2928
@peters2928 6 жыл бұрын
Have you considered putting a removable battery system on the Butterball or maybe another drill ship similar? Having a spare battery pack makes it possible to charge batteries while using the ship. And would interior blocks work to guide you along the path?

I didn't think about using a removable battery to allow for recharge, that's a really cool idea. Not sure I can retrofit the butterball but I'll try to keep it in mind for using in the future :) That's a really cool thought, I wonder how far away their small amount of light cuts out...

Another good episode. Really looking forward to each new episode you make. Don't know if i have asked this before or such, but with all the scripting possibilities out there, with such a great community. Is there a script or the possibility of a script that will alert you if you hit a specific weight on your ship? And maybe even turn off the drills? Since you now have so much ore and are working on fixing up the hangar bay, how about sending another bomb drone to the enemy bases? Just to let them know you haven't forgotten about them. I think that is why they send their emissaries to you. They feel left out :)
@Splitsie

I've not seen something that can detect the mass of a ship, I'm not even sure if the programmable block has access to that information. Would be incredibly useful if it were possible... I might have a plan to make them feel included that I think you'll like :)

Yeah. It does seem difficult to find. Maybe a tweak on one of the inventory scripts, that instead of setting a limit on how many steel plates you can carry, you can set a limit on how much ore you can load? Sounds to me it might work, but I can't code so I have no idea what is involved :) Looking forward to your solution to the pesky neighbors

With a follow script (maintaining relative position w/r/t a player-piloted vehicle), a drone could do overwatch when you're driving the goose. As a side benefit, you could mount downward-pointing spotlights on it.

Why not create a light "tower" or little solar powered light posts with interior lights near the mine for night time use. There is a slight issue with the turntable logic: Take bay 2 for example. When you park, you want to drive onto the table and be rotated 135 degrees, then reverse into the bay. However, when you drive out you want to be rotated 45 degrees (to position 180) to drive out. That means 0 isn't your exit position, 180 is. So when using any bay other than 3, you will need to drive in, press bay number, park, drive out, press bay number 3, exit. Just a little thing to remember!
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The angles that I've set up for all the bays are for reversing in, so exit will always be the parking position for bay 3. I can't remember when I did it, but I have also set up a sensor to reset the turntable position to 0 whenever I leave with the goose. As far as I can work out I shouldn't be able to run into any troubles with the system as it's set up now. But I guess I'll find out :P

I can see the idea of an 'R&D' area being built off from your hanger, it'd have it's own bays for prototypes, test beds, designs and others along with what you once said with having a wee bit of RP mixed in with your survival series. Looking at the front of the goose, it reminds me of Ed209 from Robocop (not the remake). Not going to spoil it for anyone lol, however I'm interested in seeing this 'destructive' thing you speak off :D I've tried your survival maybe out and was interesting, well erm I ended up with around 20-25 (may well be more) drones intact and locked to armor blocks just outside the cabin, at this point the pirates ran out of drones to send my way after give or take 40 minutes of fun and games although it took 4.5 to 5 hours for that to start. A question for you Splitsie, did you build a large ore detector close to your base (or apart of it), to find out whether or not there is any ore around it, mainly iron? You may well have a new sub come your next vid. Ps, if you're interested, check out morilibus, He did a solo survival (now a playlist), way before planets were added. Not sure what vid it was however he came up with a design for a welding bay for small ships (keep in mind it was in space) and was based on timers and sensors, it may well give you an idea or 2 for your own. Anyway, thanks for reading.

An R&D bay would be a cool idea - I could stuff it with a few of the older versions of some vehicles half built to really get the feeling down :) I'm glad the scenario was some fun, it could certainly use some tweaking and I'll hopefully get some time to do that eventually :P

I'm still fairly new to Space Engineers (working on my third mining ship after blowing the first 2 up on their first trip) so this might not be possible, but is there a script that would allow you to have the Butterball dock automatically when returning from a trip? I would be cool to see it take off and go dock as you drive the Goose by.
@Splitsie

Sadly at the moment I don't think so, since the Goose is mobile and the autopilot uses GPS I don't believe there is a script that works reliably yet, though there are some people working on things like that for motherships and drones. Fingers crossed they work out a solution :)

You had me scared with the title I thought you burned the Goose with a thruster or something. I was at the edge of my seat every time you unloaded the Butterball. As for night driving in the Goose, I do like the idea of interior pillar blocks with lights though power is a bit of a problem. Maybe you could just set up waypoints on top of all the pillars and spread them one every 150m or so. It'd be nice if there was a mod that lets you set the draw distance for when waypoints come into view. Oh, something that bugged me was unpainted blocks on the entryway pillars to the turntable room (at 18:57 in the video) though I assumed you'd touch it up when you got to finishing the walls and ceiling. Something else I noticed in the other episodes is that the Buttercup's thrusters don't seem to be aligned right as the Large Thruster block has an angled inlet. It would look prettier and I don't think it would mess with the script if you rebuilt them. Like always, I'm excited for the next episode!

Robberflies have caused me no end of grief while Hover Bikes have also brought a fair bit of discomfort to me and my bases. but like here in this playthrough, the Muzzle Flash is horrible. regarding Streetlights to aid in Night Driving. it would be nice of Keen to add Conductors that can be strung like Powerlines to feed power to distant lights without needing to attach them directly via Grid blocks. it would also aid in transmitting power from a Remote Solar Tower in a good location to one's hidden base.
