Spending nights outdoors is part of your family's lifestyle and you trained your kids for years. Therefore I'm sure you didn't ask more of him than you knew he could handle. Good job, young man.👍🏻

I think that the most important lesson a person can learn is that new things generally turn out to be much less daunting than you imagine beforehand. Now that he has spent the night alone in the woods it will never be such a big deal again and he won't get ill just thinking about it. Step by step personal growth.

Awesome job, dad! Boys need to be tested early on to gain confidence in themselves to succeed when life gets hard later. It's equally important that are validated by their dad. They need to know their dad believes they have what it takes to be a man. What you just did for your son is huge!

Superb!! I trained my kids the same way-ish. Overnighters started at 8. 1 boy, 2 girls all are grown now out in life. My initial overnighter training with them was, me present but out of commission. They had to "take care of or tend to" someone else. However first time out they did have the reassurance that I was there, as safety net. It also teaches them to consider others care that is with them. Once they was 100% with it. They moved on to solo trips.

Reminds me of me when I was a kid no one made me stay outside. They always had to make me come inside. My grandparents raised me And I spent every moment I could in the woods. I built a tree house when I was about 9. And I would stay all night in it in the middle of the woods. I really enjoyed it. In the winter when It got cold I would take a sleeping bag It got cold. I would take a sleeping bag and stay all night. And in the morning, my Grandma would sometimes bring me hot chocolate.😊

Your son did fine for the first time..I was 12 my first time in a "cabin" I built over a dug out pit . I added some logs and dug an entrance on the side about half way up the long side..the interior was lined with dead leaves from the fall. The roof was holey..lol but worked.. it was early November in New England. My English setter spent the night with me.. I commend you for teaching your children how to survive in the woods ans sharing with us.. One comment..I watched your other video today..grow the beard back..😁

he'll grow up to be a Spartan...! For Spartan boys the ''Agoge'' [training] started at the age of 8... they lived in groups in the woods, under the leadership of a 15 yrs old, small flexible groups, having to hunt, trap, fish, steal for food and everything they need, getting harsh punishment if they were caught, and to graduate at the age of 20, they had to kill a slave... and that was just to be able to start the proper military training... that was really hard... I used to run to the woods as a kid every time I had a fight with my parents... once my father found me living in the big city in the streets having run from home for 6 months... I was 15 years old... I developed a routine to go hunting for a couple of weeks during the ''Hollydays'' [the change of year] I loved that ''alone time'' thinking of the past and coming year...] once I found a perfect cave, water nearby, plenty of game, and everything... next year, I went straight there and stayed for 4 years... I was 24-28... I left a proper house behind me... everybody thought that I was out of the country... when they saw me a wild man they freaked out... I'm still wild inside... that's where I found my Peace...

There's going to be people that whine about an 11 year old being too young for that. Those idiots need to pick up a book and read about the kids that were on their own in the wilderness at MUCH younger ages whose parents had already taught them to clean and process game, forage for edible plants, find water, start fires, build or find shelter, navigate home using landmarks and the stars, and survive without benefit of someone coming to get them in the morning. The past and the frontier were very unforgiving and the kids HAD to learn to hunt, work, and help the family without the modern tools and techniques we have.

No so sure about this one. At only 11, I think this might be considered child abuse. Would have been different if you had done this together, but not leaving him alone. Granted you were close by, but he didn’t know that. Wait for the survival solos until he is older. Not a fan of this one.
@matthewellisor5835

BLUF Respectfully disagree. It depends on the kid, their experience, level of demonstrated responsibility and the setup. He knows the area, was between home and Grandpa's house, had means to "self rescue" has the experience of plenty of outings, Dad was close by and had the option to decline going solo just yet. I'll bet the farm that it made for an awesome memory that he'll carry the rest of his life. I sure have cherished memories from camping alone or with my two year younger sister as early as 8. Sometimes in a shack of a cabin, sometimes a tent, sometimes a debris shelter, sometimes leaning against a big rock. There were clear trails for the half to one mile to the barn and not many more steps to the house in case a bad storm rolled in. By 11-12 I'd be gone for several days (number of days and location planned and authorized by my parents or person assigned responsibility for me) with a backpack and a .22, the rabbits and squirrels didn't stand a chance.

They have done this before. Did you not listen to what Jason said in the video? Elijah knew Jason was close by... give the kid some credit, he's not stupid (far from it). He knows where his house is, he knows where his grandparents house is. You may not have been capable of doing this when you were 11. You may not have trained your kids (if you have them) to do this. But i was capable of doing this when I was 11, and no one trained me. I learned from books. Jason has been training his kids how to survive out in the wilderness for years. The only thing I'm concerned about is if he's training his girls as thoroughly, because we absolutely need these same skills and training as well.
