I live in Perth, Australia. When it is over 40 degrees, which is regular, go out early, stay in during the day, go out in the evening. It's simple. Get that UK mentality out of your head of "missing out when it's sunny".

Urban concrete heat island effect. Most measurement stations have become surrounded by urban infrastructure hence recording higher temps. Most heat is lost through infrared not via convection.

The Ionian is cooler than the Dodecanese. Lived in Cyprus for decades. It''s the hottest June I can remember. Temperatures normal now but humid. During the heatwave it was 45 degrees inland, 30 at night, no humidity. 45 is not unusual in July/August, for 2 or 3 days, but now lasting 7+ days

Agreed, when temperatures are hot, especially over 40, the only place you should be is in a cool place, preferably with an air con!

It's 33 degC in Vienna, Austria today! As well as the great advice here, if you do have to go out, I totally recommend use a high UV SPF rated umbrella/parasol. It really helps!

13 million tourists so far this year visit a very hot country (greece) . Likely by the end of the year 30 million plus . Most safely visiting to see the sun and enjoy the heat . First World problem . What ever happened to worrying about war and poverty . Guess it doesn't get the views on daytime TV

I remember back in 2001 I was in Cyprus, think it was very early July, there was a heatwave, it was about 42c, just wasn’t reported back then because there was no climate agenda!
@BP-of5cp
@BP-of5cp 9 күн бұрын
It's not the odd 42c days you may have caught on your holiday in 2001. I was born and raised in Sardinia, Just like Cyprus another Mediterranean island. In the 90s we had some odd days in the mid 40c but generally throughout summer we had mid 30c which has always been normal. The last 5 years it got insanely worse with 40c for entire weeks and months. Like to hear it or not it's a fact, nothing to do with reporting. Weather forecast reporting has been around for a long time.

@@tymc2564 maybe not in the UK. In Europe they always have been. Just because you know the small corner of your plot don't expect to know what's been reported everywhere else. Call it heatwave or call it 'next week it'll be 45c'. Wear a hat and drink water, stay off direct sun. It's been around for as long as I have been around, from around the late 80s.

Every summer I'm in Greece since 1977! Last year it was hot for several weeks without a break. It was unbearable and I love hot summers. When I was a kid in the 80s all elderly had a cardigan with them in the evenings. After the 1986 and 1989 big fires on the island of Thassos we didn't get those cool nights any more in the mountain villages of Kazaviti. The forest hasn't recovered as we never got the same amount of bees,wasps, tortoises, snakes, frogs and hedgehogs. I remember in every wall and edge of the road the many frogs. They don't find enough moitsure anymore as all the freely running water drom the mountains is collected illegally with pipes that run down to the hotels or to a mysterious collection source... it has totally changed the place. Very sad. We also get a lot more torrential rain. So very tropical conditions. I don't totally believe the global warming theory but things have definitely changed for the worst!

Advice for my Europeans : If you are coming with kids DO NOT save on sunscreen SPF 50 everyday use 70 for activities is a MUST drink water, eat only seasonal light food. Elderly and kids should avoid sun from 11-15/18h+ alcohol and carbonated sodas (sugar) should be avoided. Pets are not recomended due to them having problems at 30 ish degrees already. DO NOT SAVE money on health.
