Good that you got your hands warm, numb fingers are decidedly Unawesome. As long as they don't start turning purple, campfires and holding tea mugs seem to work nicely. Strange that the bottle got a hole in it. You are also right to be wary of Bisphenol-A leeching from the plastic. PS. The Finnish word "Savotta" has been loaned from Russian "завод/zavód". It came to mean "Logging site" in Finnish. Up until the 1960s manual forestry labour was a vital part of employment for folks living outside of cities/townships. Especially in Eastern & Northern Finland & Lapland. "Savotta" used to mean dozens of men with saws & axes, horses with sleighs, someone to cook food, to freeze the sleigh tracks(for ease of transport) etc. A modern "savotta" is soulless, with huge machines lumbering through the forest and felling trees as if a bomb came through.

Nice video Lars and as for that age old power dilemma question of what to do in the cold I have been using Aukey brand power banks of 20000 mAH and unfortunately, like you, I have had to keep them next to my body in the really cold(-40C) but they have held up fine for a few years now. I am going to try their 30000 mAH and Ill keep you updated but I have no doubt they will work. I have tried using hand warmer packs on the camera gear but the severe cold just sucks the life out of them but I what have found that works surprisingly well is boiling water in my titanium canteen and then wrap a shemagh around it and it can keep your camera gear a bit warmer.

@@SurvivalRussia once I was in the field with a crew to film in cold conditions. It helps a lot to wrap a insulation around the camera-rig PLUS this heat-pads, that hold up to 8-12 hours inside, you can get for your bodyparts, put near the batteries. Look for "Thermopad Rücken-Wärmer" or "OnlyHot Zehenwärmer" thats the kind of pads I mean. It wasn't -20°C but something around -7°C. Worth a try. The trick here is to have a good foam for the insulation, not to heavy, but this one without that many air-bubbles" inside, don't know how to call it in english and to describe it better. Hope that helps a bit! And I think it is easier to wrap and heat a power bank, because of its shape, so sewing is not that much work.

Good strategy, not relying on gloves until the cold gets more extreme early in winter, get acclimatized before the REAL cold arrives. I also love the little shelter where you can keep your gear shelter and also "season" some birch bark as well. It looks as though you have about as much snow cover as we have here in Eastern Canada already. As for the leaking water, when that little bit froze from ground contact overnight, the expanding ice might have cracked the plastic, and then it starts leaking as that ice film melts. Still, as you say, unawesome to have a leaking water store. Love that siberian log fire every time I see you make it, very efficient and looks quite warm. Great video, as always, my friend. Keep warm and keep being awesome.

My damaged finger always predicted colder weather. I had to wrap it in tissue with a layer of aluminum foil for insulation. Spitting birch in a fireplace is not awesome. Even with a screen cover, it will throw embers on the floor or worse the shelter. The snowshoe is for swatting those Siberian winter mosquitos.

Great video. You sounded very cold there before you got the fire going. Just some input I found about power banks. I was thinking that the jump start powerbanks might be an alternative to the usual powerbanks. For 220V: Audew Auto Starthilfe Powerbank - 1500A - 20000mAh - EUR 74.99 www.amazon.de/dp/B07GS16TD5/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07GS16TD5 There is a YT review of the 800A Audew (older version) - and according to the specs showed there it's working temperature is -20C to +60C. It might be the same on this Audew 1500A Powerbank, but I am not entirely sure about that. AUTOWN Starthilfe Powerbank - 1000A - 21000mAh - EUR 81.99 www.amazon.de/Starthilfe-Spitzenstrom-AUTOWN-Batteriestarter-Taschenlampe/dp/B07BZST7ZN/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1543166416&sr=8-5&keywords=Auto+Starthilfe These Jump Start Powerbanks might however not be eligable for shipping to Russia (neither to my country. Too bad, I want one :-)) But surely they will have them for sale in Russia somewhere too. For 110V: BASAF Car Jump Starter 1500A Peak (All gas, up to 6.5L diesel engine), Portable Battery Booster, 12V Lithium Jump Pack, Quick Charge 3.0, Type-C Power Bank. This jump pack has a battery of 16800 mAh. - USD 99.99 www.amazon.com/dp/B07F1QJNB9/ref=psdc_318336011_t3_B07GNF14QN?th=1 If you are buying one of these jump starters, you would want one with a Quick charge 3.0 USB port, and you would not want to buy the cheap one's, because the safety on those are not good enough. They can burn up and maybe also damage the electronics in your car. And you have to keep them indoors, because if you leave them in the car during winter, most of them will probably not be of much use. For the powerbanks only, you would have to check their operating temperature and if they are able to charge cameras. Some of them can only charge mobile phones. I didn't manage to find any of them for outdoor use. But surely someone must have made them. It is getting cold here too, with temperatures below zero, but no snow yet. Have a nice evening!

I understand they were also used by the Russian military, hence figured they may be as good as SSO? Also some of the new SSO suits appear to have switched to ripstop fabric and moved more to the British Smock pocket configuration. Had you used some of these newer designs? Had you found them to be as good as the tent fabric, gen 3 and 4 suits? Many thanks! :-)

Lars, I like the way you approach getting ready for winter season, I do the same thing to acclimatize. better to get used to the cold gradually than to shock your body all at once. keep up the good work and keeping it real!

I agree. Waking up in a frozen forest, knowing that you need to get out of your toasty warm sleeping bag, and start getting a fire going, while the frost instantly attacks your still sleepy body, is just not awesome. Still a lot better than not having the option of lighting a fire though!

You might also be able to get a smaller one as well and attach it to the camera or tripod so can be charging camera when recording, www.anker.com/products/variant/powercore-13000/A1215011 this 13000mah last's a lot longer than 10000mah and its still only half the size of big one plus it has 2 ports.

If you want to keep batteries warm put them in a plastic bag and when you go to sleep put them down your pants by your pelvis near your private parts or in your armpits . The plastic bag is in case they leak . Even dry cell batteries are corrosive.

I know that you like your raw garlic just to eat. But seeing you toast that good bread makes me wonder if you ever take a clove of garlic and rub it vigorously across/over that toasted bread? It tastes awesome.

I knew birch bark was a good fire starting material. I did not know that to get it to go really fast like you did it needs to be rubbed off with a knife like you did. That was interesting. I do have to wonder how come your tents don't come with built in ground sheets

As for water, is there not a more durable solution out there than a plastic container, maybe like some kind of large stainless steel thermos thingy! Ha,

I wonder if attaching a disposable hand warmer pad to your camera with a rubber band might work? Or make a little felt bag with a lens hole that a hand warmer could slip inside. I follow several outdoor channels and freezing batteries and fogged lenses seem to be a constant problem for everyone in the Winter.

Gotta love those first days of winter when your hands have forgotten how to be warm. You push a little to far and then get to cry like a wuss as your fingernails warm up again. good times.;)

my mate bear girls says you can boil water in a plastic bottle if your body can tolerate the chemicals. Im thinking it was the cold that did your bottle in or the heat .

Hi Lars from Bulgarian in England. In Bulgaria we still butcher a pig fir Christmas, and also eat fat(сланина) and garlic))) I think the bottle cracked because of the ice, you can squeeze it before closing it to take the ice expansion next time, hope will help. GoPro should send you gear for testing in cold))) I know you don't do much knife videos, but more like update on the Garberg, because I remember when you got your Cansbol you have said that you won't go for Garberg because of the price? But are you happy with it now? Keep on the good videos, all the best. Cheers
