I’’m impressed, I don’t know if I would have been able to stay in the shelter a whole night unless I really was in a survival situation. Though it looked like it worked great. And pretty efficient and smart. But for me personally it would definitely be hard mentally. The darkness, sleeping in a pile of leaves that are somewhat mouldy/decomposing. And being stuck in the dark thinking about the bugs. Should be a bit less bugs in autumn, but that log and those leaves especially in the bottom layer should still have some. But yeah I would take it over sleeping in the rain a autumn night any day. Impressive to have stayed the whole night in it.
@harrymills2770
@harrymills2770 3 жыл бұрын
Suggestion: Take all that energy you put into moving those leaves around, and just make one great big pile. Yes, those leaves were damp, but clearly not waterlogged. They had pretty good loft to them. Do what we did as kids and just burrow into the pile. You won't get any more water on you, and you will dry out the leaves right next to your body, and with a big pile on top of you, you might be damp for a while, but you will warm up fairly quickly. Your shelter placement would be anywhere you could protect your pile from blowing away in high wind. You'd wake up warm and dry.

This information is extremely useful. I live in the ozarks of southern missouri USA. There are woods everywhere and people have gotten lost when the weather drops many degrees and it begans to rain. Several year ago a father and two sons died in such conditions. I hear a dutch accent. My husband's mother was from the netherlands and my husband speaks dutch.

A good idea and great follow through. Might have been better if you had planned ahead and had removed the wet leaves and placed the dry leaves before you covered the shelter. Including crushing the leaves you were going to end up sleeping on before you crawled in. There must have been a lot of compaction. I learned something. Thanks for that. When I was a kid I ran away from home and spent the night covered up with oak leaves. Dry oak leaves. Just lay down and covered up with leaves as much as possible. Got cold in the middle of the night. Probably scared the petunias out of my parents. I have not set foot in a forest again (kidding).

tip. Its very important to use allot of leafs as isolation inbetween you and the cold ground. Reason are that the cold ground will cool you down 2x faster than the air and "duvet" of leef you have above you when you sleep. ;-) A good way to build a bed is to find some small branches from example "christmas trees" and put them on the ground first, and then put leafs on top of that. ;-)

Well done Julius. That was quite the snug fit. You got in to the shelter more easily than you got out of it. I did watch your winter survival video where you both fell through the ice, on purpose. Quite frankly you scared the daylights out of me. I was just thankful that every thing turned out alright. I worry about people taking such extreme measures for making a video because things could have gone so very, very badly in the blink of an eye. It certainly was an excellent teaching video which is what you wanted but please, when planning your next adventure always remember your life is not worth a video.

Wow, just now saw this video, but me and a friend had this conversation years ago. Like if you were just randomly stuck, you would have to try to something exactly like what you made. Lol glad to have watched this, gives one confidence and now the experience to try it for ones self.

i thought the same thing. an improvised rake would keep from getting too hot and then sweating.....often the start of death from hypothermia. plus you can go overboard in your pile of leaves.here is where the animal part of us is left behind by our supposed intelligence LOL. with our brains and opposable thumbs we can build rakes.
