Wazaaaa!:) So the Primitive Knife I'm using is a really special one! Self-forged from a piece of scrap steel found at the riverside, with just stone tools. Check out the Primitive Forging video together with craftsman Felix Immler here >>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3qcZ4ODYp2ol6M

Im loving the solo videos a lot more than I expected. Plus you keep cracking me up with your clumsiness please keep showing it in the videos :D. Keep up the great videos and 'taking care about nature' as you put it, good to inform the people watching about the big ''no noes'' of survival. Groetjes van een mede Hollander.

I think that camp was designed for people to come in with a tarp

it definitely lookslike a perimeter wall of a tarp setup
@jesse7300
@jesse7300 3 жыл бұрын
And yet it is not. For many of us Fins tarp is just waste of space/something extra to carry. It's useful ofc, but you can build "Laavu" = 'lean-to shelter'. You can just use branches or moss, grass or hay etc. to make it good enough. Tarp would be ideal to make it waterproof fast but far from needed
@jesse7300
@jesse7300 3 жыл бұрын
Tarp was designed for that lean-to shelter to make it waterproof faster, tarp is not needed for that shelter and imho useless. I'm from Finland and summer nights can go below zero celsius and winters around -40C and F. Have been out there in both conditions, also in warm summer nights, best is lean-to 'laavu in fin' shelter.

In the rain as long as you already have fire, it's smart. Keeps the wet from the ground from soaking you that would be sapping your body heat, as well as providing a basic insulation layer. You get as much cold off the ground as the air around you

16:06 they dont kill birch. That brown is a inner bark of birch, Phloem is just a innermost layer of bark. White part of birchbark is just for protection from sunrays in early spring. Birch cant warm so fast, fluids dont move from roots, and during cold night they dont freez. And under that white birch bark is another layer of standart bark.
@ReasonAboveEverything
@ReasonAboveEverything 4 жыл бұрын
You can actually take birch bark from a living tree as long as you do not damage the layer under it by cutting through all the way down to the wood.

Whenever I settle for a lean to type shelter I like to bring along something for a counter slope if the rain is coming in the opposite direction. A narrow strip that can be affixed to the top as an awning when sitting, or halfway down the back slope and draped over the body when laying down. I realize most of your videos are based upon the premise of not planning for anything more than a hike in the woods (this no food, fire starting materials except maybe a ferorod, and no shelter material ) but even a rain poncho can be used as a counter slope

Not really ... imagine a tree trunk is like your arm, except 95% of the mass is your bone and all your bloods supply is right under the first few layers of your skin. Cut too deeply (and that’s measured in millimeters) and all the way around and everything from that point to your hand eventually will die. My dad keep an apple tree alive and fruiting for 20years with only a hand-width of love bark still attached to the roots. In the end the entire trunk was rotted away and turned into a ants nest and only a single branch bore fruit every other year, but those were the most perfect and sweet apples I had every had

@@SmoothGefixt Here in Sweden there are no problem finding camping sites where you will be alone for sure. It can even be scary lonley if you know you are the only human being in 10-50 miles radius. In some areas the bear density is up to 1 bear per 10 sqkm (that makes around 80 bears in an area with a 10 mile radius). I have never had any encounters with bears though (I would like to see a bear in nature sometime....but in distance...). It's a funny feeling though to know there are more bears nearby than humans.
