I don't think they use their engine to heat themselves up. They probably have a diesel heater that has another exhaust pipe or an electric heater.

Snow is an excellent thermal insulator. One of the warmest, quietest nights I ever spent in a tent it snowed about a foot. Covered everything. I had to make sure the tent remained vented, but even with a bit of fresh cold air coming in, the interior of the tent warmed to 50 or 55F,, and quiet,, utter silence. Didn't even go out the next morning, took the day off and read. Let the sun burn most of it off. Second night just as warm, packed up the next day.

That is a lot of snow. I grew up at Lake Tahoe, one winter we were out of school for ten days, we loved it, but we had no power. It was January 1964 near Echo Summit. My mom was going crazy having all of us cooped up in the house, we couldn't see out the windows.

Smart idea by not going through that snow. I could tell how exhausting it was to walk through it just by looking at it. Imagine getting stranded outside in THAT!

I got stuck in Tahoe Donner a few years back ... more than 6 feet of snow in a weekend just before Christmas. When we shoveled the driveway, we were tossing it out well over our heads. A canyon of snow. Higher than the roof of a Chevy suburban. Snow nearly covered the tops of street signs. Snow covered the windows in the house... a house that was already 3 feet or more off the ground. Beautiful to look at. But an enormous amount of work to shovel. Took more than a day for the plows to show up on our street.

@@TravelersTale A big tip.... Your exhaust - at some point make a removable extension that goes up the side of the van above the roof line and the end facing down wards(stops snow blocking it) that way if you leave the van on you don't get carbon monoxide poisoning from gas building up under the van....... And simple to remove use magnet fishing magnet to hold it in place with a bit of wire or chain wrapped around it... ps put a piece of cloth between the magnet and van it stops damaging the paint.

Were I live we get quite a lot of snow back in 1978 we got a blizzard ended up making tunnels in the snow to get back and forth from garage and barn an house . We couldn’t get out for almost 2 weeks . This year 2024 had a little snow and was melted the next day been getting a lot of rain possibly maybe snow today on Thanksgiving Day at night. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your girlfriend love the videos . Be safe always keep phone charged and emergency kit near the door and a flare gun to let the road crew blow the road.

Nice adventure! I live in Canada, and have had to deal with lots of snow, sometimes as much as you just did. Everytime I see some youtuber make list the things you need to keep for an emergency in winter, they all for get a good snow shovel! They all have those "tactical" shovels and tretching tools...but they suck for snow. As you show, that snow shovel is worth its weight in gold in getting out of being stuck in snow. Also, one warning about using that sudden stop technique for cleaning your roof...it can also damage or destroy your wipers and/or the armatures for the wipers...so be careful doing that! We have tools for cleaning snow off the roof of taller vehicles, and as we may have to do it all season, it is worth keeping in your vehicle.

Love your videos! spent a lot of time traveling the country with a Silver Streak, never in this kind of snow. Grew up in Bend/Corvallis, so have been over the Cascades many times when the snow was 30 feet high (I assume you are from WA). That said, my concern watching your post was carbon monoxide, were your exhaust vents covered? Be careful. What about all the electricity you were using, solar panels would be useless, and any engine or generator exhaust vents would be covered, batteries would be easily depleted. I had 12 batteries at one time. I commend you for your tenacity and vitality, wow! Wonder if you scratched the paint on your van when shoveling? Camping next to a plowed road is wise, as a lot of instances where people thought they would be fine, and froze to death in the Sierras and the Cascades. Be careful! By the way I love Yosemite and Lassen etc., but not in winter, LOL! Best!

In this kind of weather it's best to keep the vehicle your staying in dug out frequently. Don't let it get to deep. It will make it much easier to clear a path when it's time to leave. 10 feet feom the plowed road is alot of work to say the least.
