In this 6-day long survival challenge, we test our limits, skill, and ability to maintain our body weight and thrive only eating wild foods that we scavenge, forage, collect, trap, hunt and fish, in and around the off grid cabin in the woods simulating a global catastrophic event which shuts down modern life. My Gear (Shop and Support): thewoodedbeards...
FULL SEASON 6 PLAYLIST: • Season 6: The Wilderne...
Jeremy (One Wildcrafter): / @onewildcrafter
We collect wild or feral apples and also show you how to prepare black walnuts for eating as a wild edible. We finish the day off with wild apple cobbler made fresh with maple syrup and leached acorns. This entire season is about homesteading, but we are also looking at collecting as many wild foods as possible in order to send Jeremy home with some surplus foods for his "big wild year."
In Episode 1 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we settle into cabin life in the woods. First we wake up to a squirrel hunt, which was supposed to be an archery deer hunt, just without deer. We spot a turkey, but it won't come into our mouth calls. We give the raccoon call a try without much success either. Afterwards, we take a walk on our 40 acres to check our baited live traps set for raccoon.
In Episode 2 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we find that we have success with our live trap for raccoon. We harvest the nuisance raccoon for a meal later. We have had several farmers approach us for help reducing the raccoon numbers as they are devastating their crops.
In Episode 3 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we start off super early with a goose hunt over a cut corn field with a pile of goose decoys. Despite super high winds, we manage to get a whole pile of geese during a very eventful morning hunt. For lunch, we dive into a raccoon and wild rice feast topped with maple syrup. We end the day in search of whitetail deer and wild turkey. A warm meal of trout rounds out the day.
In Episode 4 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we are made lucky with a brazen raccoon that mistakenly travels through camp in broad daylight. The 22LR makes quick work, and we are on to a fantastic meal of fresh coon. In the early morning, we try for some more geese, seeing how well our first try turned out before. Thankfully, we still have left over wild goose from the day before. We grab some more rainbow trout from the pond and get a special visit from my wife and son who drop to see how we are doing.
In Episode 5 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we begin, like most of our days, bowhunting deer from a treestand. We process some more black walnuts, check our live traps, and do a few sets of raccoon and crow to try to get even more food on our survival challenge. The end is capped off with another deer hunt over freshly cut soybean field. We grind up our raccoon meat and fry it up combined with wild rice for a hearty meal.
In Episode 6 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we begin, like every other day, on an archery deer hunt. We follow this up by checking our live traps for raccoon and find some success. The day is topped off with some fresh made apple cobbler including acorn, and maple syrup. We do a deep clean of the cabin, and inventory all our extra wild foods which Jeremy will take home to use in his "big wild year." As an exit meal, Steve, mushroom expert, prepares wild mushrooms, and goose medallions cooked fresh inside the cabin. We weight ourselves to see if we've managed to balance our calories during the survival challenge.
We will pursue all kinds of wild animals including beaver, raccoon, skunk, whitetail deer, squirrel, possum, crow, grouse, duck, goose, pigeon, porcupine, bullfrog, fish, bear, apples, black walnuts, wild grapes, burdock roots and whatever else makes the mistake of crossing our path.
We will use a variety of tools including live traps, bows, crossbows, shotgun, and fishing rod.
Our ultimate goal of this survival challenge is to not only survive, but thrive. We aim not to lose any body weight, but instead look at this challenge as a long term situation where calories in need to match calories out, sustainability.
Season 6 of our Wilderness Living Challenge will take place out of our homestead, off grid cabin complete with solar power, and battery bank system in order to help us make more use of the foods and resources we are able to collect.

Also bringing the fam around and sharing with your kiddos is awesome. My kids were fascinated learning how to dress our chickens. As basic as it is, a skill probably 95% of our current generations have never done and have no idea how to. Keep passing it on!

Plant Jerusalem artichoke. It can be left in the ground until you are ready to eat it. Has similar nutrients to potatoes but they don't have to be removed from the ground to keep them from spoiling.

I'm a native Texan but lived in W.v. for five years. I used to keep my hunting clothes outside on a clothesline and would periodically beat them with spruce branches a few days before a hunt. I also used oversized cheap white Tyvek painters suits in the winter to blend in with the snow. I've had mule deer come within 5' of me on still hunts and tracked them to within 100' while following tracks. I only step when they do and try not to walk with a steady rhythm. They dont mind as much if you sweep your feet through snow as much as the sound of regularly stepping though the crunchy top layer of snow. I had a tom cat who helped me squirrel hunt and i could direct him to walk past a tree so a squirrel would run back to my side so i could get a shot. As a reward i would twist one of their heads off and he'd carry it around all day.

Hi/ great episode. You talked about starting to plant. I'm 50 ish and just learned how to make pizza dough/ then other doughs. 1 1/2 cups very warm water, salt, pack of yeast, sugar, dab of oil/ whisk. Add 3 1/2 cup ish of flour. Knead for few/ let rise. Easy shmeezy. Same with pancakes as you guys always make. Breads is key to win challenge. Learn how easy it is. Bushel of wheat is 1000 square feet aboutish. Don't know anything about milling or winnowing or threshing. I guess yeast can natural such as putting dough under certain trees or bushes. But never tried. Just figured you guys always score on proteins, breads would be a cartwheel over weight gain. Have a good one.

I don't know if it's a Canadian thing or if you guys just don't want to mess with it, but your stews will taste better if you pan sear the meat before you put it into the stock. I think pro cooks call it the Maillard effect or something along those lines, but the charring of the protein gives it a deeper flavor profile. Here in the US we mostly can't hunt crows because of a treaty agreement with Mexico. They don't kill Bald Eagles (our national bird) and we don't kill Ravens (their national bird) and crows are considered ravens for the intent of the treaty. I have eaten some barbecued crow breasts on a late Sunday afternoon and then went to my night shift job that evening. I was in a JLG bucket lift with a co-worker and good friend doing a job up high that night and squeaked out the quietest and most deadly fart I've ever passed in my life. I think we both considered jumping out of the bucket, it was so bad. I know that it had to be the crow that fueled the noxious fart and wonder if you guys have ever experienced the same with crow or any of the other wild and unorthodoxed meats that you've consumed in your many adventures with wild foods?

As a hunter myself, the one thing that drives me nuts is I have to wake up at 3 am, drive over an hour from my home, sit in a freezing tree stand, and remain perfectly quiet, making sure the deer can't hear or smell me... Meanwhile, while driving back with a buck in my trunk, I have to HONK at a local suburban deer to get the hell out of my way as they just stand there, causing traffic...

Deer must be different there cuz the absolute best time to hunt deer is in the rainy and cold!! They like to keep moving to stay warm.. in California deer season the only time I’ve ever shot deer is in the rain .. I seen over 400 deer in 3days in the rain and then not a single deer fir the rest of the season in the sun.. so I’ve learned to absolutely love the rain cuz that’s when you see deer here
