@@busybee2033 Wow thanks for the kind words I don't believe my work is done yet either. I initially felt sick to my stomach just thinking about it, but its one of those shitty points in life you just got to get through. Wake up with water droplets all over the windows. Luckily our bodies are metabolic machines, which is what keeps us alive. I thought... if people can survive living OUTSIDE in these temps, then I sure can in a car.

They make sleeping bags rated down to -20F that don't require a heater or battery pack. I slept in my van off and on for year and spent plenty of nights below freezing, down to single digits with no issues. It has a section designed to cover your head, which is necessary when sleeping in such low temperatures. And regardless of how cold it was it was always toasty in my sleeping bag. Now, waking up in the morning and willing yourself out of the sleeping bag to get dressed is a whole different story. Going from a warm bed straight into below freezing is not a fun experience. 😅

@@yourneighborhoodxenos No, dystopian = Having the facilities to publish this advice on social media while also needing (or choosing) to sleep inside your vehicle, for an audience that may have internet access while being homeless. Regardless of his own situation, giving "survival info" that people can acess from the comfort of their own secure, heated home, is slightly distopian. We live in a society where people may be able to access the internet before they have access to a secure home. It's probably easier for a lot of people to ask their friend for their smartphone, or to go to a library, or to buy a burner phone, than it is for them to find a safe roof to live under. Hell, you could even buy a gym membership and have a locker and a shower well before you could afford rent.

I literally slept most nights with my shoes off with decent socks and two cotton blankets like a baby. The summers were the worst, and a thunderstorm was like a blessing from heaven for deep sleep. I put up a black curtain between the front & back seat, hanging above my hips when I sat or slept. I put thick foam down in the passenger floorboard, I perfectly reclined everso against the center seats, and with all my pillows it was a perfect place, bec I was so low that people didn't realize I was inside..day or night. My blanket was black, so my legs were hidden. I was able to park in any Rich neighborhood, so no nightly hunt for a place to park. I was never harassed again or constantly listen to every car that parked near by. ~Cooking and cleanup took 2hrs plus a Lots of space, so I did OMAD, a new restaurant everyday! ~Living in a Apt now has been nice but a huge part of me wants to travel...but with Solar/AC/Heat.

When I was homeless, I had to run my car for hours to fill the space with as much of the hottest air it could blow out, put on at least two pairs of everything, and then cocoon myself completely inside two thick blankets. It's all I had, and it wasn't enough. Barely slept an hour at a time. Good on ya for having better gear.

When I would go on trips I used to keep car running when slept, but that was when didn't have cold weather gear and sleep setup and had normal gas engine only. I use Prius now and have proper sleep setup, so when I was completely living in my car I could keep it off in 5F. I tried it on a few times but it's extremely annoying when engine turns on and off, even if uses less gas.

After 20yrs living as a vagabond in the states(40 of them) this is what i learned being under the stars, tent and vehicle: Emergency blankets under all blankets reflect the cold air away from you. In cold damp climates. Cut the blanket into strips. Put in pockets or under clothing or boot covers just ensure there is fabric between the material and skin. So theres no condensation. Line the inside of car doors by removing the paneling. Make sure to crack a window to allow air flow.

Was in the military freezing out in the field. Dudes told me to get naked, taking off the clothes made me warmer no kidding. I think it was a certain type of sleeping bag. I thought they was playing. But sure enough it allowed your body temperature to keep you warmer. Was super cold with clothes on too

That sleeping bag looks really nice. With the negative temperatures happening right now you should test it out in those conditions. I would do it say at home or at a motel just to be safe though. Considering we had one night go to -18°F here in Idaho. I think we lost power at least 3 times in below freezing conditions for hours! And being from Hawaii I just can't deal. So it would be a good investment for us. 😊

pain wrote, _"Link for this usb electric blanket?"_ A better link would be someplace you could learn about insulation, and how a well-insulated small interior holds heat extremely well. That way, instead of a baseless cynicism, you could become someone who's well-informed enough to form a legitimate opinion instead of just throwing shade on things you don't understand, and can't be bothered to learn about. It's not as easy as being a baseless cynic, but the benefits are much, much better over time. Learn to think. Don't be ignorant.

Here's a cheap way of doing this as well. When I was sleeping in my car and the temperature dropped to "Holy shit that's cold" levels I started using the l cheap emergency blankets, the shinny ones. I would basically put the blankets against all surface area of the inside of my car as like a barrier. Put a few of those up inside your vehicle. Just a heads up, of done correctly, it can raise the inside temperature of your car dramatically. They reflect body heat, so if you prevent the heat from leaving the car, it stays. Also, you might have to run your car and use the defrost to suck out possible condensation build up and you can run your heater for a minute to also build up the heat inside. Stay safe 👍

My time in the army when it was below freezing I slept on the cold forest floor with nothing but a single sleeping bag and the clothes I was already wearing for the past couple weeks to keep me warm while freezing rain poured all night so I had to be specifically positioned on an incline so I didn't accidentally drown while trying to sleep and cuddled my weapon to make sure it didn't get damaged or lost in the pitch black as I didn't have a light source.
