Food shopping is very different in remote Indonesia than the western world... How do we get our food??? www.sailingnandji.com
In this episode, we take you for a ride along as we try to find food. Provisioning for trips away is a difficult task when your departure port is already a long way "away". There are no super markets around, no western products, out of date "long life" foods and a market where its first in best dressed. We head into a village to try and load up Nandji for 2 weeks away.

Ooooh, I remember snake fruit as "salak", I used to love that when I was a kid. You have to be very careful in Indonesia (or anywhere else in South East Asia) with vegetables, though. Wash them, and wash them again, thoroughly! I presume you kow that already, but really, it's worth being conscious of. Farmers in Indonesia, Malaysia etc are very cavalier about their use of pesticides! Meaning that they really don't take much notice of "recommended dosages". More often than not they don't have the gear to spray properly and I have seen them simply upending whole buckets and just pouring the stuff all over the plants. Plus they often still use pesticides that have long been banned in other countries.

The fruit looks yummy. I go to an Amish grocery store and buy slightly out of date cereal and stuff like that and save a lot of money. The one thing that they are not allowed to sell expired is baby food.
@stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 2 жыл бұрын
With usual Food, the manufacturer builds in a kind of safety net. The product is edible even after the printed expiry date but beware, you have no idea what they gave themselves as a buffer. Baby food is different as the risk of a child being sick is too much to gamble on.

A trip to the grocery store is not a trip - it is an expedition! "Yeah Yoshi, let's get in the dinghy and go on a day-long expedition to the main drag's food market. But we have to get back before the tsunami rolls in. - Bonita". I wonder how you two will handle the simplicity of life in Australia? Will you two need some counseling from us? Best, :¬) Webhead USA

Great answer and smart explain Bonita. why you have to check the product before sale if you buy some product from a part of island, as you know Indonesian has so many island, and that make the distribution of product can effect to condition and price the product. so be careful before buy a product, especially for your baby, and your food/drink. I loved to see you to buy so many fresh food, that's good for your baby and you guys.. Take care, good bless you.. I wanna ask, who looking after Tallula Mae while you guys were shopping??

I was under the impression that you were trying to get home to Australia and get Marley home from New Zealand! You appear to be taking your sweet time doing this?
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 2 жыл бұрын
The Marley video was filmed in real time because people were asking for a Marley update, this was filmed before it. Also.. You make it seem so easy Stephen.. to just up and fly home from a remote part of a developing country, leaving your sailboat and everything you own at anchor somewhere exposed to the elements and the people there. Its not as simple as, I want to leave. There’s a lot to sort out and organise and it’s one of the reasons many sailors don’t return home for years at a time. Add in covid restrictions, It’s not an easy task or a matter of simply getting on a plane.
@stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 2 жыл бұрын
I realise that you can never sail to a schedule. I do not own a yacht yet, but hopefully can find a decent vessel when I fly to the States next! YOU are the ones who make sailing look easy. I have known the heartache of having to leave your home (for you Nandji) and this is never easy. We had to flee Zimbabwe when Mugabe took power, but in S.A. we have done fairly well. I have my own flat, not far from Richards Bay where I want to store my yacht at the yacht club. I used to have a loving Yorkie and she would have sailed with me except a swarm of angry bees took her out, and because I am deathly allergic to bees as well, hospitalised me.
@stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 2 жыл бұрын
@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji I don't think that I ever mentioned berthing Nandji and flying home. I know that for you it is imperative that you sail your home back and not abandon it. What I was trying to ask is why after many months, you are still in Thailand and not way closer to your home country. I do not yet own a yacht but would like you, not like to moor it unattended in a foreign country. In SA that would be inviting theft, not just of equipment but of the entire boat. Thank you for letting the world know what you doing and I hope that your mission to get back to Australia is successful in the not too long term. I know you intended to sail to SA as part of your journey and whilst I live near Richards Bay I can say that it is a great place to live and I always want it to be where I hang my hat!

You guys must stand out as such obvious Aussies without having to open your mouth. So funny. Love the personal attention in the shop. How 'organic' is organic? Do they regulate pesticides there? Do they know what there are using? Bit of DDT, 2,4D? Thats my food paranoia coming through? How 'good' is the water you mixing that baby formular in? OK that's my water paranoid coming through...everything is risk management on a boat in foreign waters... Did Yosh say ar-pikch-al-ay-gawww?
