Very well done Master. It’s relatively easy sailing a sail boat across as the rolling motion is controlled by the sails. Every one gets seasick even Lord Nelson suffered! Sorry that the weather has been a little “British” for you! John

Yep, I did some deliveries with X-yachts singlehanded from Blankenberge to Dover in the pre-KZbin time. For a sailor/sailboat those conditions are great. Also between 1996-1999 I did that trip 2x a year with my Ketch Cutter, but a trawler reacts a little different. I found out...

Welcome to the club, I've done the Ramsgate/Dover to Dunkirk/Oostende and Yarmouth to Zeebrugge many times. When the tide is from the N and the wind onshore it gets bumpy. Especially in a 10m wooden displacement boat built in 1930. But we made it and a beer or three ashore settled our nerves. Do visit the yacht club a short walk up the cliff, for a pint and great views of whence you came. As a member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships I've done the Ramsgate to Dunkirk twice and Dover to Dunkirk once after first being inspected by His Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, RIP. Kept my boat in the Netherlands for three years and met lots of wonderful boaters, used Yerseke as my over winter base. Sail safe and enjoy, thanks for posting.

I visited the club, and I have visited Dover with several sailboats (both singlehanded and grouped) before, and I am testing how 'seaworthy' Lady Liselot is. When sailing I am not so 'afraid' of the effects, but with a not-stabilized trawler this is 'a little' different.

Speeds between 20 and 25 knts? That’s impressive by itself and such a speed brings discomfort with choppy seas.

@@LadyLiselot...that is correct, very bumpy and in deed not comfortable, but boat is stable and if needed, you can adjust with flaps...by this way I avoid potential seasickness ..not to misunderstand, in flat sea I very often sail at around 8 kn..less expensive

All you have to do is pick your weather. When I see a "battle" that looks like a windy day on SF Bay... I get a real chuckle. But most motorboats are rolling tubs, that make rough going out of what is a piece of cake for any well handled sailboat or motorsailor.,

Henk-Jan do you ever do any fishing? I was looking at my chart of the journey you made across the southern North Sea and you passed numerous sand banks that were deep enough to not be a danger to your vessel, but shallow enough to easily fish. All you need is a rod and line, or even a hand line, plus a hook baited with a long sliver of mackerel and a weight heavy enough to keep your bait on the bottom. Every time you pass over a sandbank you have a good chance of catching a nice tasty bass or if you are very lucky a turbot. Ideally you need to travel at two knots or less, whilst you drag your weight across the sandbank. Incidentally the strong current outside Ramsgate you referred to is very dangerous. If you are not careful it will take you straight on to the Goodwin Sands, where somewhere in the order of 3,500 ships and boats have been wrecked over the centuries.

First time watching you, very addictive. Suggestion : get a cup holder on your helm and / or cut a hole for a recessed cup holder. Apologies for UK Dockmaster … even I, a Brit, had to listen twice to here ‘that’s it keep coming down’ in answer to your clear question regarding morning position… I would have responded with either ‘yes’ or ‘affirmative’ or ‘correct, yes, aft on the sailboat’ .. Question : 13min 30sec you show a message from UK Border, did you get that before or after mooring up in Ramesgate as that says you can take your Q flag down.
@LadyLiselot
@LadyLiselot Жыл бұрын
;-) No need to apologize the dockmaster. When you are on a spot a long time it’s become so clear that you forget how it can be for people who arrive at the first time, and if someone speaks your language, one could easily forget not every slang is understood. He did a good job. I have a bottle holder next to my cabinet to put a small bottle in. A cup will spoil everything on the floor becoming slippery and dangerous.

@LadyLiselot
@LadyLiselot Жыл бұрын
The distance is 125km, (I know I should talk in Nm’s, but these facts I know by heart…) so almost 2 tides and an average of 11/12 km/h. The moment you see land it takes hours before you are there. ;-) Steve Sheen, one of my subscribers went the other day to the Netherlands with a motoryacht, in weather conditions I would not dare. We must try to find out if and how he survived.

Hi Henk Jan, quite the voyage! What do you mean by saying you show the other ship you bow?
@LadyLiselot
@LadyLiselot Жыл бұрын
I believe it's a rule or at least a wise thing to do to show the Seagoing Vessel your intentions. Like "Tell me where you are going, without telling me where you are going." The Seagoing Vessel always has right, so he/she will continue it's course but the moment you cross it's course, panic will occur on the bridge. By altering your course so that the Seagoing Vessel sees your bow, the skipper will understand that you have seen him, and that you are pointing at him. So you then drive towards him and passes behind. Like I did in the video. Some will say that this is not necessary when the Vessel is further away then 0,5 Nm, but with my speed I will start sooner with this manoeuvre than too late.

@LadyLiselot

Mijn ervaring is: of zeilen of niets.

In the next episode you will see that I follow that prescription and I die not feel seasick at all. Would these help for you also? Question: which anodes does Lady Liselot currently have installed and do you change them between salt and fresh water travels?
@LadyLiselot
@LadyLiselot Жыл бұрын
The ones for Freshwater. Changing is not possible, but from what I know (do not believe me...) you can use both as long as it is not permanent. So I met some guys who have a berth on salt, but come to The Netherlands for a couple of weeks and then go back. And vice versa. In the Netherlands we have both salt and freshwater and people sail them al the time without changing, BUT, only for a couple of weeks and then go back to the original waters (for which you have the anodes) .

Iedereen mag daar mee varen dus.
@LadyLiselot
@LadyLiselot Жыл бұрын
