After battling the sea state in a previous episode and being stuck in Ramsgate due to bad weather, Henk-Jan sets sail for Blankenberge, Belgium. Though the sun shines brightly, the sea remains treacherous, causing intense heeling of the boat. However, the real nightmare begins suddenly after 11 hours at sea, leaving Henk-Jan stranded 12 nautical miles offshore.
With an estimated enormous cost for repairs, Henk-Jan faces a daunting challenge.
In this episode, witness Henk-Jan's expert navigation skills, his communication with other boats via VHF, and his strategic decision-making as he navigates rough waters and shallow grounds. Experience the thrill of sailing as the wind pushes Lady Liselot at an angle that makes Henk-Jan slide through the wheelhouse, and join him as he encounters unexpected obstacles, including a dangerous object.
Stay tuned for the next episode, where the story continues with an unexpected twist. Every contribution helps support his journey and the enormous costs he faces. Don't miss out on this exciting adventure with Lady Liselot!

This channel follows a format: "Join Henk-Jan, whilst he cruises with Lady Liselot".
That's it. This automatically means: no boat tour and no boat jobs. These subjects do not fit the format. So, I aim to give you a feel for what life's like aboard for me and hope you enjoy it, perhaps relate to it or maybe even learn something. But it's simply my story and the way I do things. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nederlands.
The RACE Against Time: Lady Liselot's Double Engine FAILURE Nightmare!"

Hank you are an inspiration Following your KZbin channel, I did a skipper's license a year ago I bought a boat in France and sailed with my wife and two children From the center of France through the Rhine River to Switzerland Germany we also entered the Neckar River to the city of Heidelberg And we continued our journey through the Rhine to Holland (Friesland) it was in 2022 This year we sailed for months across the length and breadth of the Netherlands, an amazing country and nice people Next year we are sailing from the Netherlands to Berlin It was really sad to see the last episode Of course, donating money is a great privilege to say thank you I hope all will be well and that Lady Liselot's will see more beautiful days

This video proves once again how quickly you can get into trouble with a boat and the dangers are seriously underestimated. I once got a piece of dyneema rope in my propeller. Propeller shaft broken and the boat sank due to water entering through the propeller shaft. I lost everything in no time. So be glad it's just your engines, it could be much worse.

I too have a trawler. In a different environment and with a different equiped boat. Yet, my boat is a 48' boat displacing 27 tons, has only one engine and I use it in the coast of Brasil. I have subscribed to learn from you. As I understand, you have passed the majority of your adult years in boats, or boating so, is good to know from you, a liveaboard. I have enjoyed all your episodes until now, the ones where everything went well, and the ones that not always things where good. Allow me however, to make a cobstructive critic: It does not matter that you have 2 engines, you should not use the throtles to continuously operate the vessel. The rudder does that. The throtles that you have are good to improve maneuverability in tight quarters. I have some milleage in open ocean myself and I have learned something. Simplicity of systems must rule in a recreational motor vessel intended to go offshore. The problems that you are having can be resolved and they will make you a better sailor. Don't quit!

Hi Hank-Jan, you ask why I watch your videos? Well, I enjoy watching you sail your lovely boat in the canals and rivers of Holland, I learn a lot about your operations of waterways but I have to admit, I enjoy listening to you.! You are a funny guy who makes what could be a slow boring video very interesting and funny. When you first started the channel, I was one of your subscribers asking for subtitles so I could understand the lock keepers on the vhf. This really improved the videos for us UK subscribers. I really appreciate the effort you put in to filming and editing your videos as it’s so time consuming! I enjoy the content of your videos too, they are informative, interesting, well put together and humorous. I thank you for your channel and your journey. Sorry things were not good with your engines but keep smiling! 😁 Safe passage Andy U.K. 👍🏻👏⛴🥇

I have started to watch your channel when going through a difficult time in my life. Similarly as you have put I have had hard time seeing positive things in life. I have an interest in boats and enjoy procedures, so watching you pass bridges and locks in the canals have given me some calm. I really like your commentaries and stories connected to the scenery, as well as the ambient music choice, which sometimes have reminded me of the original Transport Tycoon game from long time ago. I will check how I can contribute into the crowd fund scheme. My wish that you get back to the "sea" (whether it is the actual sea or canals) as soon as technically possible given the circumstances.

Owning a boat, i also have an understanding of (unexpected) costs of maintaining a boat that are sometimes astronomical. So of course i donated a small amount of money to you and i hope that a lot of people will contribute to keep you and this amazing channel afloat (literally!). Good luck with the rebuild of your engines! And please make sure you eliminate the reason of failure going forward! Also please use your experience in the rebuild and everything around that as content for your channel. It will be very informative to fellow boaters.

Gr

I shall sign up! I have thoroughly enjoyed your Vlogs since the start and find your explanations and travels very enjoyable. It is the boat activity and explanations that I enjoy the most. Could your engine problems be caused by sea water siphoning in to the engines from the exhausts when you were rolling so much? If the goosenecks are not high enough I understand that can be the problem? I share your disappointment that Lady Liselot might not be the boat to take down to the Med save through the canals and air draft might be the problem I guess - or by road on a low loader? Don't despair. I, and thousands more, are willing you on.

@herman7661

I agree. He does not need two 185 hp engines either. He uses the ship purely as a water displacement vessel and usually cruises at no more than 7 knots, very often using only a single engine. LadyLiselot displaces about 35 tons. She would be quite adequately powered by two 90-100 horsepower engines. I fully agree that he should not have the current engines rebuilt. The engines are about 40 years old, I believe, and they have been rebuilt once before, 25 years ago. One of the engines has now had sea water inside, which is really, really bad. The Perkins engines are also expensive units, with expensive spare parts. I agree with you: remove the current units and fit two new, 200 hp engines. My suggestion would by 6 cylinder, 5 litre Mitsibushis. These things can be had from various vendors here in Holland, at reasonable prices.

I ended up on your channel via the following destination and that's how I started following you too. Yes, the white smoke instead of blue smoke coming out from the exhaust does indeed indicate water in the engine in the wrong place.

Henk-Jan, notwithstanding the potential cost of repair, consider that if you wish to continue with single-handed sailing you need to address the operating cost. One engine is cheaper to run than two. Wind power is cheaper than diesel fuel. Smaller and technically simpler boats are cheaper to run. Your chosen area of travel might keep you to enclosed waters (near and within the Netherlands or the canals and inland waterways of Europe and Scandinavia). I don't know your maintenance system but breakdown-maintenance is not a good way forward. I regret to say that there is a lot to be said for asking "why is it still working and what's it look like when I pull it apart" hence all the parts of the boat get serviced including major routine overalls. I think you are very knowledgable and clever in what you have done but, I suggest you might need to look at your boat as a business operating cost with a realistic understanding of the cost of ownership. Sadly I can't slip you $40K but I can offer you moral support and encouragement, you might need to consider an annual operating budget minimum of (say) $40K PA to support you in a boat (15 metre), one engine, a cutter rig sail and an enclosed deckhouse? Yes, you should keep the AIS and other navigation aides if you can? I watch your program because like you I miss life at sea and I too would like to live in a boat; sadly that's not practical in Australia. Prost??

I probably came across you because I follow 'Enjoy Life' and 'the Vlogging Destination' and some other international boat vlogs. But what made it so interesting is that you sail alone. I always thought it would be impossible. And because you are Dutch. I have donated some money and hope to see you soon.

Why is watch your videos...? I like the slow pace, I like seeing how someone else manages situations on the water, I like seeing the Dutch landscape slide by (and the North Sea also), I like seeing how it is to live on a boat. Guess that all still keeps me watching :)

Oh man! Gestrand in Volendam.

I had been out for the weekend diving offshore wrecks and about a mile off Bridlington Harbour my home port, my wife rang and said "What time will you be home", "I said I am a mile off, I will have to tie up and the lads unload their dive gear so a couple of hours" Bang! The engine went bang and we had no power, luckily The fishing fleet was coming back and I got a tow into the Harbour, My couple of hours tuned into the wee small hours getting home, Bugger!.

Hi! So sad for your mishaps. But what happend is due to negligence from former owner and you. Enough with criticism, you have learned the lesson. As a former naval officer we had personnel for this occasions but as privateer you dont and it will take a bite in your wallet… But if I were in your situation I would not accept a proposal of 40.000€ or more for rebuilding your engines it’s redicules high. There is no time to go to the big shipyards or big marineshops. You have to find someone with the skills and a small shop. The rebuild kits for your engines is around 1500€ for each machine plus the coolers and of course some more but not that much so it could motivate the costs you are offered. Perkins engines are renowned for their robustness and reliability so I would definitely go for a rebuild. Your engine room is so big so based on my experience from the Navy I think you can do the rebuilding in place. And when while you are fixing the engines you should also take you the time and check proppellershaft sealings and all hull cutthroughs and hoses. At last, yes I would pay for your film on vimeo but not with a 24 hour limit. I use to see longer clips divided on maybe a couple of days and sometimes go back to them so for now I pass. Wy do I look on your videos? I miss the boatlife and you give me some of that in a fun format so I can dream on..

Henk, I enjoyed a lot of your videos. I made some videos myself (I'm also boating with a dutch steel boat in the baltic and north sea for more than 12 years) and I can estimate how much effort you put into it. Therefore, I'm glad I'm able to give something back by buying the Vimeo video and made a donation. As you said: That kind of failure (described in the paid Vimeo video) is very seldom. Two of them in 36 hours is unbelievable. I wondered what I would have been done when observing such symptoms on my DAF 825 engine... as you, I would not have been able to connect it with that broken device. Perhaps I would have stopped the engine to investigate further... but when at sea this might be difficult. Please keep your community updated what your experts tell you how this could happen, and what went wrong so that you didn't recognize any sign of this upcoming failure in the first place. Such experiences are very interesting for other boaters! Best of luck with fixing your engines and make your nice boat sail again! And keep smiling, regardless what lives throws at you.

Why I've subscribed? Because I love boats, sail boats and also motor boats (especialy trawlers). I sailed during my youth on my parent's sail boat, they lent me her, and I know a little bit about the subject. Seasickness: It happened to me, some time to time in certain circumstances, and my only method was to eat, having a well filled belly. It gives you psychological comfort, which is very important in the process of seasickness, and if it doesn't work, you're seasick, you have something to vomit at least.

IMO. Leuke videos, good luck.

Henk-Jen. You did a fine job on the video, especially considering the stress. I hope many more viewers lend their support. You know well the saying "boats are a hole in the water to pour money into." The time comes for old engines and equipment to fail. Sometimes even new parts fail. Especially since you want to go where the sun always shines, don't try to save money but go for the best new engines that will give you peace of mind unless you really believe the present engines can be capably rebuilt. Are you thinking of changing to another brand such as Yanmar? Whatever -- we want you to be able to look back on this in six months or so from a sunny place and know that it is in the past.

Very sorry to hear about your serious mishap. I don't know the hp of your perkins but I had a 100hp perkins with only 470 hrs drop the valves and completely destroy the engine. Rebuilding cost were quoted at 12 to 15k US. Too rich for my pocket book. Instead I ordered a chineese built under license german marine diesel for about 5500$ us incl freight and lots of spares. They have units up to a few hundred HP. Maybe an option if crowd funding is not sufficient.

I am not a subscriber and have only seen one episode, the previous one. Where I made a comment that didn't go down well. The reason I'm watching this is to find out if you mess it up again. It amazes me that you, as an old sailor, are unable to make basic preparations and checks before you set sail! If you had, you would have noticed the color of the exhaust. You have loose objects in the engine compartment, is that a good idea? Why don't you optimize the boat's position in high seas? It seems that you have to go straight to the target no matter the weather or the wind. Sailing, with the sea, in a bathtub, is much worse than getting the sea into the side as long as they are not significantly larger than what you have here. Remember that it is not a sin to turn around or seek an emergency port to find out what the problem is. It's not to be ugly, but more and more people are coming to sea in their own boats who have nothing to do there. I'm not saying you're in that category.
