I was thinking a cheap thing you could do is create a ground basin (lined and covered) with swales feeding it (use straw to filter the water going into the basin to keep most of the dirt out) - that water could be particle filtered and used for irrigation and even an outside shower. You could use 50-gallon barrels with holes drilled into them to support the cover. Then you could cover the roof with a light layer of sand.

Yeah we live off of 95% rain water and 5% river water at our homestead. I do not use rain water for any outdoor projects except the garden. Do the poly tanks get brittle in sunlight? I would think that a roof over them would give longer life and keep the water cooler. How deep is the groundwater table? If it is less than 25 feet, you could drive in a well point and put a pitcher pump on top of it. I put in several of those well points with pitcher pumps many years ago and they worked well. You can drive the point by building a tripod driver. When the well is done the tripod will be useful for lifting. Grade your land so that rain runs into a holding pool. Don't let any runoff in streams. You can use that water or just let it perc into the soil and build up the groundwater. Good Luck, Rick
@ourselfreliantlife4 жыл бұрын
Our water table is deep at least 300 feet but probably more. Poly tanks won't last forever. They'll break down eventually. The cistern we built should last darn near forever. 😁

AC problem there. Look for an Easy Start, Sure Start, Fast Start, Soft Start, for AC unit, which you can purchase for $250-300 which basically adds a large capacitor capability to existing AC unit, so it can charge first the capacitor, aka "slow start" the unit to get the compressor to kick on, before the AC then reverts to the lower continuous electricity used for it's normal cooling cycle.
@consciousmoviereviews97304 жыл бұрын
I'm new to your great channel and from Arizona. I have a suggestion for your indoor heat situation. There are solar fans that are less than $150 each you can use and a little kiddie pool full of water for your dog. Also, a dehumidifier can produce over a gallon of water per day, which you can hook up to a solar generator. The water would have to run through a simple filtration system to clean it out, just in case. As a side note, I read in "National Geographics" a while back that the Southwest will experience extreme dryness with less rain that can last for 60 years. That's longer than what the Native Americans had endured for centuries in the area. You might want to look that up for accuracy and see the regional forecasts for the next 10 years or more.
@ourselfreliantlife4 жыл бұрын
I think there's probably a lot of truth to the national geographic thing. There could be long droughts the Southwest will endure. Technically we're in one right now. That's why it's good to have redundancy and build for much more water than you think you'll need.
@honthirty_4 жыл бұрын
Southwest dry spells can last much longer. Look what happened to the Anasazi indians that lived in AZ, CO, UT from 6500 BC to 1200 AD. Entire culture wiped out by a 200 year dry spell.

@JoeZyzyx2 жыл бұрын
A/C problem there. This is 2 years ago, so you probably already realized you need a "slow start AC unit" since most AC units have to use a surge at the first to get the compressor running. I ran into this problem in Panama City Fl area, when for weeks after Hurricane MIchael in Oct 2019. The first generator was a 2200w, and the window unit was about 500w, but I learned it was NOT enough to kick the compressor on, just the fan. Part of reason is cheap window units don't normally come with some high power capacitors (more expense) in them to first store extra energy, so can discharge it for added kick to the compressor starting up. Yes, 500w AC unit is low enough draw on 2200w generator is enough to run it AFTER it's started, but sadly needs that higher electric power surge at the start to get compressor running. I had to return the rental generator for a 3300w version, which did work to get the AC running. It was weeks till new electric pole was installed, then hooked into the mobile home for use. Till then, used one 5K window unit, and an inductance cooker, but suprising the the 900w microwave also could be used on that 3300w generator.

So if I got this straight,, you started with ~5500 gallons and you ended with ~3000 gallons.. So you used less than half in a ~year.. No need to panic ,, yet.. *IF* you get any more rain this season you will potentially have 19000 gallons+ storage.. If you can't survive on that much it might be time to move to the rain forest in WA state.. You do have it correct in that you just need to be mindful of the water that you do use.. I went through ~2050 gallons in the last year and that was with 2 other temporary boarders and 2 dogs using it.. You got this.!!

They call it a desert for some reason! There are average rain figures, that's what you can expect. Other ways to catch rainwater are: planting trees or shrubs and dig the earth around, (this will take years) so when it rains the water will be absorbed into the ground. Build retaining "walls" (made of earth) horizontal on the ground, so less water will flow away downhill and stay to soak your terrain. Avoid plants that need lots of water, and do your plantation at the correct season, to take advantage of the expected limited rain water. Research what the old people did back when they had to make the best out of that land. I wish you all the best for your green dream, cheers!

We are in Australia.. in a rural area here we only have rain water tanks. Town water just isnt available. We have 2@22000 litres (5800 gals) and 3 @ 5500 litres (1300 gals) all connected to the house roof (colour bond metal sheets) and the shed with the same style roof. Then it goes through a double filtering system into the house. Hasnt killed us in 20 years 😂😂
