Surviving One of the Deadliest Routes to Europe: Refugees at Sea

Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats.
In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe.
On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe.
VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life.

It’s all I fucking want, I cry when I look at world news, where is the love? Maybe I am soft or something but I don’t care my heart is in the right place I’m conscious that these people are brothers, mothers, daughters fathers. Etc. So I hate it when I see pain and suffering I relate too close I know what it’s like and it sucks but as for change, I see none, I see no possibility for change the rich hold too much of what is ours and they don’t intend on loosing it they have more power than me and my plans after are non existent making the whole thing useless, idk what to do, all I know is that family is number one so love yours it’s all you can do that matters in this lifetime.

It’s unimaginable to come up with possibilities that could have caused these embarking. It’s devastating that people have to go through such a hardship. This is the result of Colonization, Westerner interference, lack of integrity and humanity within African leaders, etc. The people who saved these people in need are simply amazing! most of them are not real refugees and they all come to the rich parts of Europe (Western Europe). I am from Western Europe myself and Western Europe is completely destroyed by the fake refugees. because they do not get a residence permit and then start stealing and harassing our women and children. It is really terrible how things are going in Europe now. I have respect for the real refugees, but 90 percent are people who are just looking for a better life. and I understand that, but it cannot be the case that they come in hundreds of thousands at the same time. the nuisance caused by these people is really extreme.

@@Zone07376it’s not cruel!! What they’re doing is idiotic and they oftentimes have access to the same information on the internet as we do. They choose to ignore the warnings and embark on the journey anyway, acting like savages, entitled and disgraceful. Not all of them. But I genuinely don’t understand why they don’t seem to understand (I am more so speaking to the primarily Venezuelans here in the US that since word got back from the from the first batch that they were getting free 5 ⭐️ hotel rooms, and an ungodly amount of social services that even our own homeless and veterans not only DONT receive but are paying an immense amount of taxes to provide a cushy life style for economic migrants and escaped prisoners. And now of course 2 years later they are STILL arriving in droves and are somehow shocked that the US is not the paradise of freebies they thought it would be because a nations resources can only stretch SO FAR!!!! They choose to come anyway and it becomes a drain on everyone, but particularly those who are already suffering, making minimum wage working three jobs and trying to survive. It’s disgustingly selfish, dangerous and irresponsible 🤷🏽‍♀️

This video touched my heart. It makes one realize what we take for granted. I know poverty; my father came from humble beginnings. He was born and raised in the Philippines and joined the US Navy to come to the U.S. There is a lot of poverty in his country, but watching this video makes his country feel like it's paradise. They, too, long to come to the better places, with the U.S. being a on top of their list. Unfortunately, dad's country is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and I don't believe there's any way they'd succeed getting here via boat from there. I don't think rescue teams go that far, in the World's biggest body of water. Bless these people and, of course, the humanitarians who help them. I hope they achieve what they want and make the most of the outcome of their journey.

And compare that with salaries of high government officials about 5000 Ethiopian birr (500$) per month. With these facts, it's really hard to think of them as refugees especially having the fact that you can probably start your own business with 20,000-50,000 Ethiopian birr (1000-2500$). I can tell u first hand, as a young African, that it's the greener pastures/economic opportunities that is attracting them and it's really unfair on Europeans

This is the official YT account of MSF in the UK - we ran the search and rescue operation on-board the Bourbon Argos featured in this VICE documentary. It's interesting to read many of the comments about this film and how much hatred there is towards migrants and refugees making this perilous journey to Europe. Of course, as a medical humanitarian organisation we view the "migrant crisis" from a very different perspective to most of the people commenting here. We have witnessed the conflicts, oppression, and violence that many people are fleeing from, and hear first-hand the testimony of people who make this perilous journey. We produced this documentary hoping to give an insight into why people are fleeing to Europe and why we feel compelled, as a humanitarian organisation, not to let them drown in the sea. Perhaps it's not possible to convey all the complexities of this situation in a 30 minute documentary, but if people are interested in learning more about our work and why we think it's so important to help these people, head over to our channel where we have additional interviews with the MSF staff on-board the boat as well as with those people rescued.

What you guys do matters so much, even if it's only a small band-aid on top of the gaping wound which is the situation in the middle east right now. I have so much respect for all of you. As an American, it's hard for me to contribute directly but I'm being dead serious when I say that if I lived closer to you I would volunteer in a heartbeat to join you on your mission and help out any way that I could. It disgusts me reading through most of these comments, knowing that most of the people posting are probably also American or European and have no clue what it's like to leave everything they know behind to embark on a journey which they don't know if they will survive. If they did, they would certainly not be saying such hateful rhetoric. I wish you all the best. Please stay safe and please don't succumb to the pressures of public scrutiny, because like I said they just don't have a clue. And please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I don't have any money to donate or I would. Just know that what you're doing absolutely matters, and don't ever give up.

@@dudeman5234 Actually no, they don't have to help. Those are people who believe in Humanity and want to help a perceived people in need. Those people who rescued them owe them nothing. Instead of blaming, why don't you become a Leader and create a wonderful life in your country where there is no/very low corruption and where your Standard of Life is high. Even when discussing this matter, you curse, stomp & pout like a teenager. Real men don't complain, they build, create, and make Life better for everyone not just themselves. They are honest and Kind and create Peace within their Communities, not just for a select 'Few'. I am telling you as a woman with the Wisdom of a Wise Grandmother: Stop it! And, grow up! Even when recent and illegal immigrants arrive in The West some bring their tribalist views and attitudes with them and have the nerve to call the host country people 'Lazy' or try to look down on some of the locals after getting a few dollars in their pockets, thinking they made it😄 What a joke! It's not about money per say, it's about making a positive impact on the people you come in contact with while keeping your integrity. Not by trying to trick, use, or taking from other people, scam marriages, fake University degrees, or classism. I am just amazed and very disappointed at 'Adults'.

I have no respect for them because of that. They "help" people who are about to destroy their country. Imagine going to USA without any id. Feels impossible huh? Only few percent of those people are actually escaping the war. The rest of them just wants that juicy social money. They are destroying our culture, economics, and even people by killing them.

I bet you'd be doing the same if you were in their shoes. You won't understand their plight being from a Developed country. Its human nature to look for greener pastures. I'm not saying Europeans must bear all the migrants, but there is nothing wrong in saving fellow humans from drowning in the sea when you are able to rescue them.

Please don’t say ‘Third world’ that’s what the West called it. An African should not call it that. Plus they call it ‘Developing world’ now but I still think it’s wrong to call the richest continent the ‘third world’ or ‘developing world’.

Sup neighbour! I'm a Zambian in Frankfurt tho and you're right, BW is very peaceful like most Southern African countries. It IS so sad Heart-breaking 💔 💔. 😢 😭 watching people scrambling to be rescued and listening to a Son, speaking about the mother he'd left behind. ANYONE (including my humble self), who'd ever had to LEAVE loved ones behind in their quest for a better life far away from home, NEVER KNOWING WHEN/IF he /she will ever live to see those left behind again or not, FEEL AND KNOW! I pray the young man will some day ,be happily re-united with his mother again (unfortunately, my 🙏mother RIP🙏 , was not destined to witness my return 😭😭😭)!

That face @ 4:56 that look js the face of a man who loves his Mom. Thought a happy thought of her, then a realization that he had to leave her behind in all of that mess, started hating himself for doing it then when the pain began to be too much to handle so he hangs his head, trying to hold back the tears while every possible terrible thought of what he had to do to survive ran through his mind. When he tries to gain composure he tries to stop crying... That is a man, very much like me, who misses his mom beyond incomprehension.... Unless you are an individual who has lost their Mom too
