I find it very hypocritical of all of you coming on this channel to attack this lady for her experiment and also rosered's but you accept the other channel who tells you in several videos I have watched that this is not an approved method or you shouldn't can cured meats as she cans cured meat! All of you need to stop! If you dont like it then its pretty simple. DON'T DO IT! Before you even start I happen to like all three channels. But the snarky attitudes really are tiresome.

When I have used the Tattler gaskets on used lids, I tighten the lids down just like normal, ignoring how the Tattler instructions say to do, because of the sealer in the old lid. The gasket needs to sink into that a bit. Never a fail. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan

The controversy is all about money. Tattle wants you to buy the whole package. The goal is the jar seals and the food is preserved. Stop allowing YT personalities to influence your free thinking. If you want to try the method go for it. If the jar doesn't seal it's just like any other lid I've tried. Ball can fail and so can Tattler. You do what you have to do when times are desperate. Noooooooo. You cant! They won't seal long term! There is nothing on the metal lid to keep it on! Because of this B.S way of using them tattler has pulled the rings. So now those of us that actually use the tattler lids can't get our replacement! The original metal lids have the seal imbedded. Tattler rubber seals are NOT imbedded.

Good video presentation. I'm glad that you are covering alternatives as there are shortages out there, especially lids. These days folks need to be somewhat versatile and creative. Now here is some information that we have heard from a source that knows someone who works for the parent company that produces Ball, Kerr, Bernardin products. They will be concentrating production on jar cases and not much on lid packaging this year. How much truth there is in that is open to speculation but as I am not seeing much in the way of lids in the stores the statement seems to ring true. The upshot here is that you are giving folks different possibilities and that's a good thing.

Oregon BassBoss...It would not be unusual for a company like that to focus on the "complete package" of jars, lids and rings over the consumable lid or lid and ring combo....But I couldn't confirm or deny...I just keep hearing that there are still many in the US having trouble finding lids...and yes people need to find alternatives when their "preferred" is no longer an option.

I've seen others on youtube using tattlers tighten as usual then back off/loosen a little bit. In my experimenting I did like you (and the instructions!) and hold a finger on top while tightening. I got 50% seal rate. Now I get 100% by usual tightening and backing off. When they come out of the canner I tighten like I normally do, not overly crank them, that led to some failures for me. Hope this helps!!!!
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Andrea...I think that the instructions are what they are because most people do over tighten the lids at the best of times. Thanks, that info helps...I have developed my own feel for how "tight" (it's not quite "tighten as usual then back off/loosen a little bit" but close and will likely stick with that when I try using the tattlers as well...and I agree that when they come out of the canner "not overly cranking them" is the way to go...Thanks again!!!

Canning was not always regulated. During home economics college days canning instructions were standerized. There were many different types of jars and methods as well as recipes. As lids were made and time progress and the sealing compound has become thinner failure happens. You are testing like the USDA tests and this way may some day approve. Did you know the new Ball book of recipes are not approved! One wonders if women can think for themselves anymore like our mothers and grandmothers did in hard times.

Well I am a very frugal minded person. And also very concerned with having materials for the future. Which is why I got the harvest guard lids three years ago. The ultimate irony is this: After a long time in denial, Tattler is now MAKING, selling and recommending their gaskets be used with their new metal lids - just as this lady initially proposed. Only difference: she is re-using old metal lids. A seal is a seal. NIH seems to be the syndrome...Not Invented Here. But once they decided it was a good idea, they tooled up and joined the parade. I think the idea is genius! It is now my standard practice even with new lids. The gaskets give very good seals!

@Kimber1Day 2 жыл бұрын
@@HerHomesteadSkills Actually no, this isn't my opinion, it is fact. Using Tattler or any other type of gasket (not rubber bands) under previously used metal lids is not safe or approved. It has not been tested or approved by any scientific body, any US extension office, by the NCHFP, or Ball, or anyone else who might be considered a "trusted source." I'm not sure how there can be "so much wrong..." with my comment when I only said two things. 1) False seals are real and 2) using Tattler gaskets (not rubber bands) under a previously used metal lid is not safe. Like Empty Nester Homestead indicated below - Tattler has even come out publicly to say that this is not a safe or approved use of their product. What's funny is that your response to ENH is "do you really EXPECT them to?" It's funny because you follow Tattler's instructions in the video when you said "the tattlers recommend an inch headspace so I'm going to go with that." So basically you only follow instructions and guidelines sometimes. Good to know. You can share bad information - your channel, your rules - but you can't expect everyone to agree and not add correct information in the comments. Especially people who follow, advocate for, and teach safe canning. People put a lot of time, energy, and money into their canning, so bad info like this is hurtful to those families who do not know about safe canning recipes, methods, and processes. It not only costs them money when they lose their food but it could make them sick if they don't realize they had a false seal.

If I could not find lids, I might try this. I would be very careful and especially check seals regularly. But if canned for proper temp and time, if it seals, isn’t it safe?
@Kimber1Day
@Kimber1Day 2 жыл бұрын
@@JaniceCrowell Canning supplies are few and far between right now so I totally understand why people might be inclined to try this. However since it's not tested, we can't know that it's safe. One thing that comes to mind is that it wouldn't vent the same as either a metal lid on it's own or a gasket with it's proper lid. That means that your food may never get hot enough to make it safe. Tattler has made multiple statements about this and one of the things they have said is that it might seal but they wouldn't expect the seals to last more than 30 days, if that. If you are going to buy the gaskets go ahead and get the lids that go with them. The Tattler & Harvest Guard gaskets are made specifically to go with their lids which are much thicker and rigid than the metal lids. I've used Harvest Guard lids for years and have never had a failed seal for as long as I've had the jar. Here is a video of someone reading one of the letters from Tattler. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3yzY4KNrseri8U

Diana Orcutt...OF COURSE IT'S SAFE...I have shown that the jars I have canned using this method have held a strong seal for 100 days now...I can leave them for another 100 days if necessary! All you have in rebuttal is a statement with NOTHING to back it up except the words of those with a vested interest in making sure this method is NOT adopted. PROVE ME WRONG!!!!

As long as the food is processed completely, and the jar is still sealed… why wouldn’t it be safe?

Melissa Lewis...right, It's no less safe than any other "properly processed and sealed" home canned food...

Also Harvest guard and Tattler lids are also not USDA approved 🤷‍♀️ Tattler over reacted and was very u professional with their public statements this week.

Her homestead skills, All I am saying this is not an approved safe canning practice and you should not be telling others how safe it is. Not everyone has money to throw away if the jars break seal in storage and they have families to feed. There are a lot of people who are new to canning and are looking for people to show them how to do it correctly and safely.
