Ferfal now lives in Spain, but is very tuned in to what is going on in the States. His Sunday round-table talks with another author, Matt Bracken are highly informative. We all may need the skills shared in Ferfal's book, and the proper "machine gun" for what looks to be inevitable.

I think this is the most accurate book on how life could be. He does have a youtube channel called TheModernSurvivalist. In the beginning you said survivalist talk about machine guuns is silly, Some of the survivors of the Siege of Sarajevo used them for protection. Good review.

Thank you for watching! I meant that only concentrating on machine guns and the like is silly--thinking that an economic collapse is going to be like the frontlines of WW1 or a 24/7 gang war. I think guns are an essential part of the plan, but so often I see "top ten guns for the coming apocalypses" and "how to make your house bullet proof" nothing about "hey--maybe start learning how to keep a garden to counter food inflation costs." This was the first serious source I found that took guns seriously (and didn't see them as evil) but also talked about how to not become a target--jewelry to avoid, learn to not carry a purse, build a book and DVD collection so you aren't tempted to go out a lot at night for entertainment. Everyday practical things like that. But I agree that guns for protection is a vital part of any survival plan, I just think focusing on them to the exclusion of the less sexy everyday stuff is silly. Thanks again!

I probably won't read this but back in 2010 I read Emergency this book will save your life by Neil Strauss. It's a non fiction book about him becoming a survivalist due to fear of the world coming to an end. Plus me being young stupid and paranoid I had similar fears (the old 2012 Mayan calendar BS). Anyway that book helped me get over my fears.

Thank you for this review! I'm interested in reading the book. I've held off ordering it because of the situation and not wanting to spend money or tax the delivery system for any non essential item. I didn't know he had a You Tube channel and so that's wonderful I just found it and will see what he's done in video format! We've never experienced the lack of being able to buy canned goods and toilet paper before this Pandemic and it is quite sobering and eye opening the new level of preparation required. Our stores are so busy right at a time when it hardly makes sense to be out at all but I can see it's because if you can only buy 4 cans at a time of certain things (product limits) it appears people are going daily. Anyway, I really appreciate this review. Doing my best to improve our preparation (also live in hurricane zone) and not panic. I definitely want to read this book even as I hope that recovery will be strong from all of this in the USA and everywhere around the world.

I'm glad you found the video useful! I'm also in a hurricane zone and we've been hit pretty much every year for the past several years. Matthew turned my county into something you see on TV after a flash flood in some other country and some of the further-out areas were without power or emergency vehicle access for months. A lot of the stores simply couldn't get truck deliveries and supplies were hard to come by for several weeks, so in a way I'm glad we had that experience. It gave me a crash course in how to do the basics and where my weaknesses were. This pandemic has been easier in many ways--we have power, we can get things delivered even if it takes a month to get here, we do have internet and can get in touch with people. Hope you're able to get a copy of the book--it's a good read, and thanks for watching!

Excellent points. While some form of self defense in the form of firearms is a really good idea also because guns double up as a hunting and food harvesting tool you are correct in that the prepper community in many ways over-emphasizes having "the latest machine gun". I have friends who spent outrageous amount of time and money on the latest and greatest sniper rifle with all its accoutrements thinking that SHTF would be tantamount to war but the truth is that it's a mistake to confuse military maneuvers with survival. The two are at cross purposes with each other. The military's job is conquest and they can afford to get all tactical due to the training, physical conditioning and huge budget the government invests to allow soldiers to focus all their time and energy on killing people and breaking things that stand in their way. For the rest of us looking to survive you have to focus on "ordinary life" first and the goal is not conquest but rather survival. Just take a walk around the neighborhood in good times even if you are in good shape for even a short amount of time and see how you get thirsty, tired, hungry quickly. Imagine acting like you have to fight a war traipsing around the neighborhood in a ghillie suit or body armor and having to rely on your completely untrained neighbors supporting your "flanking" maneuvers. It's craziness! The truth is that, as you and the author state, 99% of staying alive and healthy is simply avoiding trouble by staying out of harm's way.

I agree whole-heartedly and have seen many of the same things with my friends. They'll have a budget for self defense and buy three different guns and 2 boxes of ammo for each. All mix-matched calibers, of course. So now they can't afford to properly break in the weapons or remain proficient in them. They'll purchase cartons of shelf stable foods and have maybe 5 gallons of water stored. I'm kind of hoping this whole pandemic thing helps to bridge the disconnect between the reality of what life post-SHTF will likely be like for the majority of us vs the special-ops fantasy version that a lot of people seem to have. If the lockdowns have taught my friends anything, it's that they need some way to spend their time in a way that is at least entertaining and at best productive when they are prevented from going about their normal routine. Many fell into unhealthy habits out of boredom. When Hurricane Michael blew up our county, we were lucky enough to avoid any major property damage, but we were out of power for over a week. I found myself learning how to wash cloth diapers for twins the old fashioned way with soapy boiling water in one bucket and rinse water in another. If any experience could drive home the appreciation I had for practical, down-to-earth advice on making do in unusual circumstances, it was that week. For my birthday that year I asked for a hand-crank mini "washing machine". Haven't had to use it and I hope I never will, but at least I know I can keep us in clean laundry next time the power is out for an extended time. :) Thanks for watching!

@@cynthiapayne9906 Ms Paine you sound like a very intelligent lady. As far as the guns thing I think I figured out that the goals of a SHTF/prepper/survivalist are drastically different than something military but the easiest thing is just focus on the common calibers in this order: 22lr, 12ga, 9mm, 556 and 308 in that order. 22lr is probably the best of all due to inexpensive nature and in the end it's quiet. You can get CCI quiets of which I have a few cases to harvest small game and their penetration is enough to (barely) qualify for FBI self protection at 12 inches unlike most 22 loads which fall shy of that. It's the low velocity that helps keep the bullet together and just go deeper! What no one talks about is keeping a low profile and the truth is that if you shoot anything bigger you will attract a lot of attention while a shot or two of CCI quiet in the head at whatever animal you wish to harvest will go unnoticed. The common calibers all used to be cheap and anyone with any kind of foresight would have accumulated them in a way that is appropriate with their lifestyle, location etc. Maybe if you live in the forest you can stop at 12ga. Urban settings in the vicinity of gangs might benefit from 9 or 556 and so forth. 556 is amazing because the same (formerly) inexpensive milsurp 55 grain plinking load also goes super fast and tends to blow up inside whatever you're shooting so your practice/fun/range load can also double as the self defense load. That is unique in the gun world as most calibers FMJ ammo is much cheaper but useless for hunting and HD/self defense. 308 is great for bigger creatures especially at range like you wanted to hunt deer at more than 50-100 yards like if you live in the midwest. 9 is great for handgun loads and in a SHTF/WROL useful for carry but don't underestimate pepper spray. If you just have unarmed but numerous aggressors bent on robbing or raping you a quick toot in the face will In the end the attack and allow you to get out of dodge. Pepper spray is SO cheap and I carry it daily despite being a larger man with some (not a lot, not weak not MMA champion, somewhere in between) fighting skill and strength. I give all my friends, male or female, pepper spray as a gift. Simplicity and keeping a low profile is best. The best of all is as you said, to incorporate hobbies, activities and "sustainable" ideas in your life like a victory garden or hunting for fun. Don't forget trapping. Honestly dollar for dollar, pound for pound buying a few havahart traps and 10lbs of rabbit feed might be dollar for dollar the easiest and cheapest way to get meat of all. Exploring your area in 4x seasons is amazing. With recent snowfall I couldn't believe the beast tracks I saw from very large dog (WOLF!) to plenty of deer, opossum, squirrel, fox, and plenty of bunny. Occasionally you see bear tracks as well. Cool stuff to enjoy with the family. Don't forget to try to get medicines especially antibiotics in bulk. This is not easy but it helps if you have friends who have a license to prescribe as just one little cut can turn into a life threatening infection if you're not able to access (or afford) care in a SHTF scenario. Other stuff like anti diarrheal, nausea meds, anti inflammatory or fever reducers will save your bacon. Don't forget steroid creams and anti fungals in the BIG jars. Chronic meds you take maybe even like thyroid or whatnot will be critical, get a few years supply, most of them like blood pressure or thyroid or antidepressants are SUPER cheap like the Walmart $10 for 90 day list. They come factory sealed and all these will last well past their expiration dates by decades. Bug spray and bug nets too are important as water purification. IT's going to get dirty and buggy fast! Remember most filters will quickly clog with dirt and sediment to buy hundreds if not a few thousand coffee filters for a "first pass" filtration so your expensive water filter(s) don't crap the bed the first week of survival. Buy a second or third bug filter. Also there are those plastic bathtub receptacles you can use to fill in the event of something bad going off for 50-60 gallons per bathtub of instant water. Again, super cheap and E-Z. Butane torches are far better than lighters or matches and more reliable. Get a nicer one or two like the Bernz-O-Matic with spare butane to refill but you can also buy the crappy little Chinese ones they aren't too bad. And lots of matches for backup. Make sure you have at least a few saws and axes. If you're not well schooled in chainsaws that can be very dangerous and as all machinery if you don't use them regularly they will perish so stick with the more analog hand tools as it's not that expensive to get a few. Also if you live in a cold climate make sure you have plenty of undergarments, long johns, extra winter socks, extra gloves and hats, a few extra sets of boots. Avoid cotton as when it gets wet is loses the insulation power as the water kills the air pockets needed to trap heat. This also doubles in helping you pass the time in the winter. I tell everyone there is no such thing as bad weather just insufficient clothing. It helps you get out there. All these things are not expensive and for the price of just one or two very expensive guns and a few boxes of their pricey ammo you can outfit yourself very lavishly. Indeed you are correct in needing to find activities. Boredom kills. Boredom makes you sit in front of a screen, drink eat and get fat. Boredom makes you out of shape. All this is bad for life in general even if things go well, it goes 50x for SHTF. So glad I was into the outdoors and in this stuff. When I first took up the lifestyle in 2008 everyone thought someone of the sort was sniffing glue and the tin foil hat type. You also want to keep this stuff a secret for other obvious reasons so I never talked about it except for slightly testing the waters usually using a key word or two you only see in blogs like yours sometimes in a slightly derogatory way as a smokescreen. Like gay people or others of less accepted lifestyles testing the waters, takes one to see one. But in the end we all watch the same videos, visit the same sites, belong to similar clubs, read the same newsletters, get the same emails. It doesn't take long that you hear someone speak that you figure out no matter how much they try to minimize it (and every prepper does) that they are preparing. The last 4-5 years way more people have taken this up. Your social network becomes VERY important. I don't have a bunker, but I have more than some skills, I would consider myself moderately to fairly decently but not amazingly prepared. Even I was caught off guard this year, thankfully I remained gainfully employed and took a chunk of the money I saved by not going on trips and doing stuff to save up or extinguish debt. Another chunk I used it to fortify my position so to speak but not just buying stuff but also books like the one you reviewed. Your greatest asset is your intellect and skillset. Thank you for your honest and heartfelt video. I really enjoyed it especially how it was free of commercial bias. Unfortunately like everywhere else the net isn't as free as you'd think and the overwhelming majority of "experts" really are just shills for products because the commercial end has all the money and that's what pushes and redirects net searches. There should be more people like you more visible but you aren't because you have nothing to sell, and therefore no "big money' pushing your viewpoint. Warmest regards, Merry Christmas and stay safe out there!

@@mikecoglione1308 Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well :) I feel ya on all that, but I've got to say I've never been able to feel confident in pepper spray. I was a Deputy Sheriff for six years and we were required to carry it as a Less Than Lethal option. I got sprayed and certified each year and I got to tell you--it sucks to get sprayed, but it never stopped me from being able to fight back to to achieve the course I needed to run in order to complete my certification. It just made the day miserable. And snotty. As far as being in the field, my fellow officers were just as likely to hit their backup (me) as the suspect, it was useless in confined spaces or anywhere indoors (everyone gets hit regardless of aim). It doesn't work on dogs beyond spooking them with the compressed air. I had so much more confidence and effectiveness with my expandable baton than I ever did with my spray, and it was also just a handy tool to have on hand when I needed extra leverage or a bit of extra reach. They're like $30 on the civilian market. I imagine pepper spray is still best for most because it requires no real training or experience to use, but personally I've never trusted it. It's way better than nothing, however. Someone will have to be pretty determined to hurt you to keep coming after being sprayed, and the vast majority of assailants are looking for an easy target. The bug thing is also a great point and you are completely right. I'm in the deep south. We may get down to freezing a handful of days a year, but we also have a 6-8 week span in the summer when it never gets below 85F and will hit 105-110F. It's Jan 2 now, 69F, and I'm in a tank top. Our area is an odd mix of flat broke and old, old money, so except for Orlando Fl, our county has the highest yearly budget for Mosquito Control in the entire country. If the economy does get real bad and that department gets cut or significantly reduced, we will be seeing Biblical level swarms along with all the disease (both human and animal) that they bring. Not a pretty thought.

@@cynthiapayne9906 I appreciate your insights into pepper spray as a true power user. I have had nothing but good experiences with it fending off one curious Coyote and more than a few unleashed dogs. As you can garner I am an avid outdoorsman and out there a lot. The last ~5 years has seen a huge negligence on the part of dog owners to the point where I am seeing unleashed and unattended canines with no owner outdoors or even in sight. I started carrying the "hot sauce" on a regular basis after a handful of very uncomfortable and terrifying run ins, sometimes with very large dogs considered vicious. One dog owner even came after me after spraying their dog, actually 4 loose pit bulls in a public trail in the woods, all of which were unleashed, took the wind right out of all their sails. It's like you kick them in the nuts, they want NOTHING to do with you and stumble away. Long story short I am on a 1st name basis with the local constabulary for all the calls on me and the calls I put in for incidents like this. I wish to stress I don't start anything with anyone, always seek to retreat or get away, never trespass on anyone's property and only spray if the dog won't leave me alone or acts aggressively barking, coming after me, snarling etc. I am always right because in the end all these owners are not in violation of the local leash laws that put them and their pets at risk and makes them liable. In this time when everyone is so fat and lazy until corona hit I think I was the only one out there so all these people get away with it. There are various opinions on pepper spray out there, Personal Defense Network here on youtube seems to love it and actively recommends it even for those who conceal carry a handgun. I agree though the splashback is NASTY. I have never been sprayed with it but every time I used it I got some back and didn't feel or breathe right for a day. Like COVID I couldn't smell or taste for several days after!
