My husband and I renovated our 1916-year-old home 20 years after we moved in and paid it off. We did all the work ourselves, inside and out. We were in our late 40's. There is no way at 67 that I have the desire or ambition to do that again. My husband would size down to a one floor plan and renovate an entire house all over again in a heartbeat and do the work himself. We have lived here for 40+ years. In between he single handedly has again remodeled some of the rooms since. It is great to have a handy man who can do anything. He's been a blessing and has saved us so much money by doing the work himself. You are so right Beth, late 40's into mid 60's made a huge difference for me! Your stress is normal. I have heard from so many who have built a home how stressful it is. The after will be your reward. God bless.

A renovation is very stressful! Our coping reserves diminish as we get older. It takes tremendous energy to live among chaos for weeks/months. Be kind and gentle with yourself, and maybe vent to a girlfriend. Plus, get away from the house and take a break occasionally to restore! Hugs, Beth.

Thank you so much Jean! Yes, it is getting much further along. The bathroom is pretty much drywall and Thursday. The wood floor person starts bringing in the wood floors. That will take a week to two weeks and then we have 2 to 3 weeks of painting, the walls and the trim then the tile, then the carpet then we’re done! At least with the first floor. Yay!

I don’t know about the flower boxes and front door being black with the brown brick…not on the same color scheme. I like the bronze better. I would do real flowers too. I know some people are doing faux flowers but I think it takes away from the flower boxes. I would do away with the ceiling fans especially in a newly renovated home. I didn’t want them in our house but my husband did so we did a compromise and put in a fandelier. So much prettier and was a great compromise for us. Maybe you should look into going with a different decorator. Some of this is outdated but it is your house and you have to live there happily.

So fjun seeing this remodel in progress. If it were my kitchen, I'd do away with the funky angle of the kitchen sink island, and make it come out straight from the wall into the kitchen. That way it won't feel so crowded coming into the kitchen from the great room, and will look more modern.

Omg NOOO, that raised counter keeps the sink and faucet concealed from the relaxing room. Why destroy that????😢
@ericksonsails3 ай бұрын
I agree. Seems like there is pressure to take it out and go to one level. I am looking at new countertops and this decision has me frozen. I once knocked a china cup off a counter in a vacation rental without the back behind the counter. Maybe that if where my fear comes from.
@cathykin5143 ай бұрын
I believe she just wanted it to look more open and it does. I couldn't decide what I wanted. In the end I chose the shelved effect (to conceal) but, it definitely does close off the room. I was okay with that - but if I wanted it more open like Beth I understand taking it out
@susanbaker27963 ай бұрын
I agree with you, @suzihazlove4979. For me, I cannot relax and/or entertain when the kitchen is a distraction and disaster. The raised counter hides pots and pans in the sink and plates cleared from the dining room table waiting to be placed in the dishwasher, etc. I specifically had the raised countertop added to keep this sort of thing out of view. Even though it does cut the room off a bit, it gives me the freedom to hang with my guests and then clean up after they leave.
@suzihazlove49792 ай бұрын
@@susanbaker2796 mabe cuz this little lady is petite age needed to remove any obstructions. But now the pressure to keep the sunk area clean, ALL THE TIME? no way possible. I'd hate to look at all that . Just make me think of cleaning.
