David and I attempted to summit this mountain last March 20, 2022 and we failed. It took us almost 2 years before we set to try once again for a winter ascent this past weekend (January 27-28, 2024). Instead of one day, we split it into 2 days and stayed at High Creek (9,300 ft) for one night and summiting the following day. It was forecasted to have windstorm this weekend and also a bit warmer. At camp we experienced gusty wind of about 50-60 mph. It was not so cold despite the wind but it kept us from a continuous sleep which we needed for the climb the following day. The morning of Sunday was still windy at camp but we decided to give it a try. Slowly we made progress until we hit 11,000 ft. At this elevation you would think that mountaineering is required but we managed to summit with just micro spikes and trekking poles. In fact, all summiteers had the same traction devices and poles that day. I would recommend for those who will try to summit to bring their crampons and ice axe just in case you will be needing them.

Make sure to prepare for winter mountaineering if you’re planning on going, atmospheric river is in the horizon.

@20robertang ... not sure, just when I think I'm going on a trip, the weatherman is wrong again... or it rains a little, and I still work in it.

Great video Robert! The wind on Sunday morning was so demoralizing I thought there was no way we were going to summit, but we persevered and did it! Tagay!

Thanks, David. Yeah, there’s no harm in trying. But you’re right, I was feeling disappointed already thinking that we will head back down after breakfast. Till the next one, tagay!

Very cool! Thanks for taking us along on that one. That trek out of high creek straight up to the ridge must have been tough. I’ve only taken the switchbacks. Loved this one but I am biased towards the SGW. Take care, Robert

Hahaha! I know how you love this part of SoCal, if I live closer probably I’ll be up there somewhere every weekend. To me the toughest part is hiking down around 11,000 ft where the steep icy section was. It scared me to death at one point. Thanks, Matt and you take care as well. Tagay!

I remember a couple of treks in particular on that trail. One was us hiking past high camp and hearing my name called, then a guy introducing himself from hike likers and giving me his # to hike with him in 3 weeks. You see, he was doing Whittney the following weekend, then I was doing it the week after. Turned out that was his final hike, he fell off the trail on the way down and died. Another was going up with Martin and Martin laying down in the trail to catch his breath. I went here and there filming and returned to see a woman nudging Martin with her foot, asking him, "are you alive" He fell asleep. that day as well a marine and his 7-year-old boy, made it. Many good memories on that trail, with Luis, Monica, Martin, you, Derrik and many others. A few solo where I was the only one on the mountain, it's always a treat to experience this. The entire range has been my stomping grounds for damn near my entire life, 42 of my 58 years! It is impossible to remember every step but believe it or not, I damn near do! I remember one time in dobbs in particular on that seg of the range, a guy named Chriss and I were up there, man, ask me about it some time Robert, I near pissed my pants I was laughing so hard that weekend!

That mountain cannot be treated lightly, it’s mysterious in some way. I love to hear that story when you we’re with Chris, should be fun to hear around the fire one day. I remember when we stayed overnight at summit with Monica and others, on the way down we passed them at Saxton and then they were already at Momeyer parking when we were still on trail coming down. I thought for a moment.. is this twilight zone! Great times.

Thanks, Edward. Sometimes we should move out of our comfort zone and try to live once in awhile to achieve the adventure we wanted. But doing it in a safe side though. The REI Flash Air 1 is tested so many times and it didn’t disappoint me most times. I even used it in Trail Camp during one of my Whitney trips. Now, it’s tested in wild wind and held up good. Reason why I chose it over freestanding tent is because it’s so light at 1 lb 4 oz. Although I don’t have the Nemo Hornet, I’ve used some other freestanding tents as well and they’re bombproof shelters. It’s just heavier.

What hard shell is that, last year you were using a Black Diamond hard shell if I recall correctly, the red one.

This one is The Northface. I’m alternately using them depending on the weather.

@@20robertang if I may ask, what weather conditions do you choose one over the other? Thanks.
@20robertang

@@Smashycrashy I prefer the Black Diamond when it’s colder and chilly like when we did Baldy in white out condition and Mt Shasta. The Northface is great for trip like this one or cold desert days.
