On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Pheonix AZ on 1-24-24.
We're looking at a 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT in Burgundy Paint. The car comes with the 390 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Randy Honkala. Randy’s had this car since 2023. Randy shares as a 9-year-old he saw a comic book with a 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone on the cover. He always wanted one after seeing that. After years of searching, he found one for sale, bought it, and now he has the car on the comic book.
ENJOY!

Absolutely beautiful !!!!! I bought a 66 cyclone in 1975 from my neighbor for $500.00 when I returned home to DC from the Navy. To this day wish I still had it. 390 with 4 speed. L-60's in the back with a 411 rear, posi, elderbrock hi rise, hooker headers double pumpin Holley; used to write my name across the intersections leaving the red lights lol. Love you care bro. Well worth the wait

So nice of Randy letting you drive his incredible Mercury Comet Cyclone. I think a lot of people back in the day were a little puzzled. Mercury is a Roman god who was the swift-footed messenger of the gods. But, that wasn’t quite fast enough. I guess the suits added comet 💫which travels through space at about 35,000mph. But that wasn’t quite enough. “Hey! How about Cyclone!?”Anyhow, Mercury was kicking some ass and taking names in the 1960’s. Especially the Mercury Marauders.😠👍 Very nice and thanks Lou!

Thanks Much Lou! It was a very long wait for the right car but so worth it! The proper '66 Cyclone GT unrestored was really hard to find. Years ago I had a Red with white interior white pinstripe Cyclone exactly like the brochure & ads but it was only a Base Cyclone with a 289 and was less engine. I built a 700hp BBF for it but then moved and had to sell it after owning it for 16 yrs. One of my first cars oh so many years ago was a 1967 Mercury Capri 425hp 427 4spd car one of only 6 built. Since then I have owned 2 other 427 Comets and 3 427 Fairlanes but this '66 GT was the dream for so long. Today I will drive the Cyclone 65 miles each way across town so the wife can get her dream car! Hint: It's a Lincoln. I drive the Cyclone very often and as a matter of fact took it to lunch just yesterday. I prefer to drive it over my '23 F150 STX. Pure bliss driving it although with temps warming up and well up into the 80's I need to get the AC working again. Montgomery Wards AC was added in August of 1972 at 40k miles so very few miles on it. It was disconnected by prior owner when the new water pump was installed. Again, Thanks much Lou and was great to meet you!

I still remember vividly going with my parents when they bought their first new car in 1966. I was 9 years old. My dad was a Ford/Mercury buyer. There was a dealership in the next town. One of the cars they test drove was a white Comet Capri 2 door hardtop. My dad wanted that car in the worst way, but my mother couldn’t get past the sticker price. I remember that it was $3,006.05. Now an option package costs more than that.

I see this Cyclone was built at "Lorain Assembly" in Lorain,Ohio...My father worked at Lorain Assembly. In 1966 he was a repairman and could have possibly repaired something on this Cyclone if anything needed "fixed" after it went down the line...Lorain Assembly was the Ford plant to work at if you loved mid sized Ford and Merc supercars....Lorain built all kinds of rare muscle cars. Some that were never supposed to have been built and some that the so-called "Ford Experts" say never were built.Lorain Assembly was only a 3 hour drive from Detroit and if a Ford bigwig wanted a car built with whatever options on it or whatever drivetrain in it,it was infact built. It's good to see this Cyclone is still around and being cherished.👍

Fantastic Car. My dad had a 66 Comet, not a Cyclone, though. His was from the other end of the model line. I took driver's training when he owned that car and spent a lot of time driving it while I had my learner's permit. The Comet was a great handling and fun to drive car. It I were a collector, a couple of them would be in my collection. A Caliente Convertible and a Cyclone GT. I'm glad you posted this video. I enjoyed it.

Hello Lou! That's a nice car that owner has! And it's rare - you see more Fairlane GT's of that year than Mercury Cyclones. A Cyclone convertible was the pace car at the '66 Indianapolis 500. One thing I thought about those wheel covers. I actually thought those were rims, but they're WHEEL COVERS! They first appeared on (I think) the '64 models, when the Comet was still a Ford Falcon with an extended wheelbase. Amazing how much it transformed in two short years, and by 1970-71, the Cyclone would become a serious performance car, competitive with the Chevelle SS and the Plymouth Road Runner! Thanks again, Lou, for another wonderful video. I made my comment a tad shorter this time around. Hope you enjoyed it, though! And as always, I will be watching!

The Comet had a fiberglass hood to save a little on weight something you could not get on the Fairlane 390 car I liked his better naturally cause it was a stick shift which is right up a 16-year-old boys alley beautiful car the gentleman very fortunate

Unusual shift quadrants for a '66. Officially didn't come out until '67. In 1967, there was a 427 V8 option. There was even a drop-in 427 crate engine which the dealer would swap. No A/C compressor? Then pull the under dash unit.

@automatedelectronics6062 I have owned 3 of those Rare 1967 R Code Comets 425hp/427. A capri, a cyclone and a caliente. The 3rd owner removed the A/C compressor when he replaced the water pump and never put it back on. Very soon will get the AC working again. I do have a mint in dash factory AC setup also along with full 4 piston disc brakes from a 427 Comet. Also have a NOS 427 only Power Brake booster. Debating if I should change the brakes. The power drums work fine for general driving but in heavy traffic the disc would be nice. So busy with projects. Bit shy of 10 months now and just have not found the time to work on it. Do not want down time.

@@randysrestoration Disc brakes are considered a safety improvement, so do not downgrade judging of a classic restored car, especially if they were optional. I've seen plenty of award-winning Mustangs with added stock disc brakes, even on the early cars. Disc brakes are fade-resistant and better stopping. But they do require extra application effort. The best thing I did to my mother's '68 VW Bug was to add front disc brakes. The calipers turned out to be the ones used on the Type III so they were a bit larger than on a Ghia. Downtime should be as short as possibly. I used to do my big projects on Thanksgiving weekend, when I was still working full-time as an auto-tech.
@randysrestoration

@@automatedelectronics6062 I have not downgraded anyone's car because they added disc brakes. And this car disc brakes were NOT an option. You must have not read what I wrote. For what I want to do to car it would take a good month to do. Currently have 10 multi thousand hour restorations to attend to any 90% or more of the time work alone.

WOW, what a beauty. This Cyclone in Burgandy looks great! A plain jane Comet of this vintage is quite ordinary. A Cyclone GT will definitely get attention! Don't believ me...just turn the key and listen! Great vid, Lou. I'm curious, if anyone can answer this: This is a Mercury Comet Cyclone GT. Was there a non GT verion of the Cyclone? Thanks.

@@loucostabile Actually, I looked it up. There were Cyclones that were not GT's. Loved reading the history of the Cyclone. Google and Wiki had a fantastic hisgtory. Thanks for sharing this car with us and getting me doing research!

Yes the base cyclone was avail it came with a 289. The GT hood was avail on the Cyclone as a option standard on the GT. There was also a 390 avail on base cyclone but the 335hp avail only on the GT as standard equipment. I do really like the Burgundy paint! It changes colors so much depending on lighting. It can go from dark almost black and in bright light it looks more like a shade of red.

@@randysrestoration Thanks for the additional info. Randy, I appreciate that. So many of us here are mere fans of autos and we don't know a lot of the facts, that's why I always appreciate it when one of you guys reply to my messages or comments. Enjoy your day!

That A/C unit clearly illustrates why they were called "knee knockers" 🙄🤣

I can see why they would be called that.

This was another nice video and I really like the car/what confused me, was the intermittent windshield wipers/I saw the main knob and it said to turn it to the right for low and high and then turn it to the left for the intermittent, but then it said something about another button and it was labeled “b” to adjust something else and I never could figure out why you would’ve needed that second knob when the first knob did everything?

Not sure if it was a 66 or 67 but in the late 60s early 70s my Father had a 390 4 speed Cyclone GT convertible, robin egg blue with white interior, its long gone he wore it out driving to school/work in the Pennsylvania winters......I always wondered how many were made like that one.

People ask me if I would ever own a electric car or a hybrid. "already have a hybrid" It burns both gas and rubber! As I pull up to the pump for some 100 octane.
