I had this huge feeling of vertigo and fear and I was in a state of confusion as I was slowly waking up but still seeing the airplane trying to go up when I heard my husband saying that an airplane had crashed in Madrid, I said:I know!! Thinking to myself God he has seen it too! That was scary! , then I asked him how did he know? I witnessed this crash in '08. I was 13 years old and sitting on my bicycle on a hill near the airport watching take-offs and landings (near the Pony Club in the suburb of La Moraleja). Minutes after the accident, helicopters flew low very near to me to scoop up water from the adjacent golf club's pond, and dumped it on the smoking wreckage. It was a typical dry and dusty August day, the hills around were golden and you could see the heat distortion on the runway. Will never forget it- may they rest in peace!

@cppguy167 жыл бұрын
There isn't. Air conditioning on jet airliners is powered by compressed air coming from the engines. And they don't turn on the engines until after pushback. So it can be very hot during boarding.

They have air condition, but it is reliant on bleed air from either the engines, APU or air from the gate. Also, engine bleed are usually turned off on hot days to make sure the engines have sufficient power in the heat.

Lemon Bleach What does a flap do?
@educatedredneck33427 жыл бұрын
Drama Sverige they produce more lift at slower speeds. If you use Too little flaps, on takeoff, you will need a higher speed to takeoff and a much longer Runway. Too much flaps during takeoff and you won't gain enough airspeed quick enough with that flap setting deployed to takeoff. This plane clearly took off, but it stalled soon after.

@wannamontana41306 жыл бұрын
Flaps change the shape of a wing to produce more lift at lower speeds (takeoff and landing). Once the plane is airborne and at higher speed, the wing can produce sufficient lift without the flaps, therefore they are "flattened." This flattened configuration is insufficient to produce lift during takeoff ... therefore the plane flailed.

@cppguy167 жыл бұрын
It was a bit more complicated. During their first takeoff attempt, there was an overheat warning, so they had to abort. Mechanics inspected the engine, and determined that it was due to a faulty sensor. Tragically, they fixed the problem by disabling the warning siren (!!), which also caused the flaps warning to be disabled as a side effect. Lesson learned: never ever fix a problem by disabling your warning siren!!!!! On any other day, the flaps warning would have sounded during takeoff, and the pilots would've aborted. On any other day, this accident couldn't have happened. It's really tragic, because pilots don't usually forget about extending the flaps, and they happened to make this mistake on the only day when the warning siren didn't work.

The good news is that - at least in the US - flying has become extremely safe. The woman killed recently on that Southwest flight when the engine "exploded" (for lack of a better term) was the first fatality in the US on a US carrier since 2009. Just one person since 2009. In that time, well over 300,000 people have died in their car. But I get it - it's something that is in our minds because it is so much out of our control. I'm always thinking about it when flying.

@petermuller58004 ай бұрын
They were dealing with a technical problem before takeoff (overheating engine sensor). They had pulled the circuit breaker of this component, and were discussing what effect this would have on autothrottle and engine power upon takeoff. That also explaines the copilot's first reaction: "Engine failure?" and the Captain's mind was on the autothrottle ("ignore the alarm, we already expected this anyways, fly the plane"). That also explains his last words: Fly the plane! Fly the plane! They were expecting false alarms caused by the pulled circuit breakers. Never fully understood what was happening.

_IceSkateXcaptain _ For most aircraft engines, even if you spool the engines when starting a takeoff roll, if you put in too much power it increases engine wear, so the engine will have a shorter lifetime. The solution is something called TO/GA thrust.
@cppguy167 жыл бұрын
If the flaps and slats are not properly extended, the wings simply cannot generate enough lift at normal takeoff speeds. There's no time to accelerate, you're doomed. You would have to fly significantly faster before flaps are no longer needed. I'm not a pilot, but typical takeoff speed is 130 knots, and you need some amount of flaps until 230 knots (approximately, depending on the airplane and the weight). You can't nearly double your speed in the 20 seconds that it takes to crash. I'm not sure if they could've recovered if they realized it immediately, because it still would've taken several seconds to extend the flaps. The pilots are supposed to check the flaps before takeoff, and if they overlook it, an automated warning is supposed to sound when the plane is still on the ground.

_IceSkateXcaptain _ bitch if you don't have the flaps deployed the flight will not be stable.

I've been watching these videos for about 14 hours and I'm wondering why so all the pilots look sweaty even before things go wrong lol
@hisugaff54675 жыл бұрын
You should read/ watch the full description of what happen about this accident. At that time they were going to take off, but cancel it because of some errors.. while waiting that things being repair on ground, the pilot shuts off the engine which cause no more air conditioning runs inside the plane, they delayed about more than hours, so you can imagine how hot inside that plane without air conditioning on for hours (the AC will on if the engine back to on). After a clearance, they going to take off again and ended up crashed.

I certainly love it when passengers are being interviewed. At least then I know that the plane crash was’t catastrophic. Ooof, never mind. That was very bad!! I’m curious about how many survived such a tragedy.🤭

@MeganThe_ Cat this is re-enactments the real life plane crash, not the real life footages inside the plane that crashed in real life. Smithsonian camera crew don’t exist. Lastly this TV series wasn’t belong to Smithsonian Channel.
