4 door/wagon classics are becoming a popular car now because they are cheap and more often than not are better taken care of, One of the 20 something girls I work with just bought a 1980 Ford Fairmont Wagon because she has 2 young kids, and her ex is a complete dick and kept the car she had because it was in his name, She paid $800 for it, it runs and drives fairly well but the paint is toast. me and one of the other guys have pretty much spent the last 3 weekends with her, the first weekend we detailed the interior, and gave it a good bath, 2nd weekend we changed all the fluids and gaskets so she could atleast drive it. This past weekend we cleaned up the brakes and suspension and started on the body work getting it ready to paint, Currently it's light blue but were 2 toning it White and GM Medium Poly Green, I have a half gallon of the green and the other guy has about 1/3 of a gallon of white that were going to just donate to the cause. were just going to clean up the wheels, repaint them and throw some cheap aftermarket baby moons on it for her.

I loved my gold ‘69 4 door Dart with its slant 6 and Torqueflight. It still had points but I kept that engine so well tuned that as soon as any one of the six pistons hit TDC it was running, just set the choke and bump the key in the morning and you were on your way. In all the years I had it I never had a lick of trouble with it. I even drove it home from Vermont to NJ after spinning out on ice and slamming the right front fender into a guard rail three times. It spun around and hit the same place on the same fender three times but nothing else got touched other than the headlight bezel. I pulled the fender out of the tire, unplugged the flaming headlight and carried on. Found another fender in the junkyard when I got home and it was none the worse for wear. I think it was even the same gold color. Truly a magical car!

Oof! Very cool. I am always impressed with how nicely points vehicles start when they are dialed in like that. The only comparable thing I know of is the VE pump Cummins - they don’t seem to make half of a crank rotation before they fire when all is well.

Yes! That’s exactly how I feel about my Demon. It actually has a couple little rust spots I’m going to have to address sooner than later… but I will only be patching those and matching paint as best as possible. I refuse to paint the car or fix the little flaws.

Had a few 70’s darts way back. They were cheap and plentiful. The tow 2 doors I owned had the slant 6, and I had a 4 door with the 318. Would love to have a 2 door 318 Dart now, but good examples are bringing high dollar

I drove a 69 Valiant 4-door about 7 years. I've had several 2-door Darts but the 4-door Valiant was actually better for a daily driver. The shorter doors were better in tight parking lots and the door hinges lasted much longer. It was also nice not to have to get out to let people into the back seat.

The Australian 225 slant six is a real goer in this country,the Dodge Dart 69 model looks like our VE Valiants.Shame you guys never got a hold of the Hemi 245/265 six cylinders,some of the fastest production cars of their times with the E49 Valiant Chargers.I love your stuff Jamie,particulary your tech hints.Nothing sexier than a '69 Coronet RT.

I had the same model and color with power steering, power brakes, factory A/C and automatic . The car on a good day gave 12mpg (gas back then was 28 cents per gallon) and the 0 to 60 time was somewhere before noon. Ordered the car August 1969 received October 69 put 35000 miles in 4 years traded for an ordered 1973 Chevy Caprice with all the options. Good times!!!

I had a love/hate relationship with my 1971 Swinger. Factory FE5 Rallye Red car, Black vinyl top, black & white interior. Sounds good until I get to the Slant 6 engine. The first engine lasted only 2 weeks before it put the #2 rod through the block. Got me home on 5 cylinders and no oil pressure though. Bought a used Slant for $200 and had the car back in one piece in a weekend. I tried everything.... replaced the timing chain, converted to electronic ignition, even converted to a Super Six setup with two-barrel carb and custom-fabbed dual snorkel air cleaner. The car still travelled at the speed of smell. I live in a fairly mountainous area and I could use the temperature gauge as an altimeter. Anytime I wanted to go anywhere, it was like the Pike's Peak Hill Climb challenge. Except I was doing it at 35 mph the whole way. Stomping on it would surely incite passing gear, but all that would do is make noise and make the engine heat up faster. By the time I'd reach the summit, the gauge would be pegged on the H. I felt like Dennis Weaver in "Duel" anytime I took a trip. Let that one go, too. Bought for $400, got all the lights, gauges, etc working again. Put a stereo in it, did some dirty bodywork and backyard paintjob.... sold it for $1500. I might have kept it, but this was the early 2000's before any reproduction sheet metal existed for the A-body and the car needed everything: floors, quarters, trunk extensions, inner fenders.... you name it. I'm the king of kitty-hair fiberglass so I made it presentable but it never would've won any kind of OE Judging. And surely, nothing shy of a rare earth magnet would've stuck to it. Of course, to replace the car today would cost me $35,000 and one of my favorite body parts. Oh, and the grille is off a '71. '70 had silver vertical ribs on the grille, '71 had black. Also the Hood badge is missing.

Wow. There are good slants… and there are sure not good slants. Yours was definitely the latter. You’re the only person to answer with both incorrect details. Nice! I loved my ‘70 Swinger, but it was largely a platform for learning. Four small block engines, five transmissions. A four speed conversion. The first engine I built (wrong-ly.) The second engine I built (much better, but only after two sets of heads.) Testing different four barrels, intakes, and ignition systems. Bucket seat conversion (poorly.) My first big adventure into bodywork - and how I learned I don’t have the patience for bodywork. All of these lessons and more. I wish I could have that back - but I’ll find a suitable replacement some day.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I loved my Swinger, but if I ever find another one, it'll be a small block. After driving AMC Six-cylinder cars for years - they are like night and day. Torquey, lively, love to rev and infinitely more power than a slant. My Gremlin is a racecar in comparison to my Swinger. I also had a Valiant Brougham hardtop. Mom bought it new, I inherited it at 82,000 miles. 318, discs, 727, 3.21 sure grip.... that's another one I foolishly sold. To have that car today, nobody would believe the options it had. It was a two-fender-tag A-body!

I don’t think anyone really saw it coming. These were “parts cars” or winter beaters to hardcore Mopar enthusiasts for so long. Although I usually tried to avoid it, I personally cut up at least one that had been a really good car and didn’t need much. To see any old iron still living on the road now is just so special. It’s rolling American history, really.

I'm sure you would be shocked if I didn't have a 1970 Dart story. In 1994 I bought a one owner '70 Dart Swinger. I didn't meet the owner, because she had passed away. She did however leave clues that she was a whole lotta Rosie. The driver's side of the bench seat was permanently crushed, and I found a business card in the glove box from a clothing boutique for large women. Anyway, it was that factory Damn Green inside and out, like the Dart in this video. It had a 318/904 combo and was completely rust-free. I daily drove it for 10 years, and even delivered pizzas with it! I installed 360 heads, a four barrel carb, dual exhaust, and a performance cam. People got their pizzas real fast!

I had almost this exact car... '70 Dart... lime green... but mine had the 318 in it. Power steering but not power brakes... no A/C... pretty basic. It was my great grandmother's... I kinda got it when she stopped driving in her mid 80s. SUPER light power steering and super heavy (non-power) brakes. It was a hoot to drive.

Nice old Dart! It very much reminds me of the 67 Coronet 4dr I once had. It was about the most bare-bones Coronet you could buy, slant 6, rubber floor mats, dog dish caps, and very little chrome trim. It did have an automatic though, so I guess that was a step up from a 3 speed manual. I bought it in 1987 so it was 20 years old at the time, but it was very clean. An elderly couple had it and had passed on and their family sold it to me. The ash trays had never even been used. I gave it a good cleaning and a wax job and it looked almost new. It had 3.91:1 gears so it didn't get the best mileage on the highway, but damn I loved that thing. Then I sold it to a friend, who later sold it to someone else, and the rest of the story is too depressing so let's just say I wish I had never sold it.

Wow. That’s awesome - until the story got sad anyway. I wonder if it was a base model Coronet Deluxe. It’s so funny that the basic low end models were always called things like “custom” and “deluxe.” You really don’t see many of those. They are almost always the 440 model like our wagon. I actually owned a ‘67 Coronet 440 sedan myself for a while. I never really got to drive it, and I eventually traded it for a boat. It somehow ended up in the Rocket parts car collection, so now I see it every single day I’m there… also sad. It was a pretty decent car.

My grandmother had a 1968 Dodge Dart. No power steering, no power brakes, slant six. It was just about bullet proof. But it felt like driving a car built in 1948. It wandered, the brakes were marginal and it was about 3 1/2 turns from lock to lock.

Nice old Dart. That is a concern, all that extra metal, where there should normally be holes surrounded by a brown/orange crusty substance. Down here in Oz, 69 was the last year of left hand threads on wheel studs. In 70, they went to all R/H thread, the same time the (marketing exercise) "Hemi" 6 replaced the slant 6, so a one year only with all R/H studs and 4" PCD wheels. 71 saw the 4.5" become standard. We didn't get the Dart/Valiant twins, just the Valiant, 62-66 on 106", 67-70 on the 108" wheelbase. But our 69/70 Valiant 2 door hardtop was built using a lot of 67-69 Dart sheet metal and the 111" wheelbase.

Had that same car, color and all. I put a hitch, and the bbd carb on it to pull my fishing boat. In 2000, I let my boy drive it, and fixed it after he hit a nice doe. I ran out of steam after he hit a 12pt buck, 2 months later. Darn kids. Love the slants. My daily is an 82 miser shortbed.

Wrong body and wrong year but it takes me back to my interim car, a '73 Swinger, in that green or very close, with green interior, /6 and 904 transmission. It was overall in really nice shape when I bought it but when I moved and had to leave cars behind, my uncle could only store one of them; '71 Challenger (first car!) or '73 Swinger (bought when the Challenger rusted out too many freeze plugs). Challenger won, Swinger got sold cheap to a coworker... sigh. Wish I had it and every other Mopar our family owned still. But there was just no way to do that. I like 4 doors just as much as 2 doors. And Wagons more than two doors. Hardtops over sedans. But I would happily keep a car like this, green and all.

I may have said this before but when I came back from Iraq the 1st in 2004 my ex wife and I were looking for a car that just needed some TLC for a weekend fun car that we could take to cruise-ins and Cars and Coffee's with the kids plus I could use as driver when I had to go do Army things away from home. We found a 72 Dart 4 door, same color as this one but mine had a dark green vinyl top and a 318, it also had the original AM Radio, which didn't last long, a couple months after getting it and doing in depth tune-up including tires, fluids and gaskets I drove it from Central Missouri to San Antonio Texas, that's when the AM went bye bye, a 14 hour drive with little to no entertainment is not fun, I was there for 2 weeks teaching a class and one day 1 I went to Wal-mart and picked up a cheap $30 stereo and put that in so I would have some tunes on the way home. I drove it until 2016 when I moved out here to Northwestern Arizona and gave it to my niece for her first car. All in all it's one of my top 3 cars I ever had, I absolutely loved that car, I'd love to find another one.

@@AtZero138 Thank you but don't thank me, Mine had a 318 and was 100% stock except for the hubcaps, It only had 3 on it I bought it do I just cleaned the wheels up repainted them Black and then threw a cheap set of Baby Moons on it, I wasn't about to spend a ton of money on it because like I said it was just a weekend fun car for the family and something I could hop in and take on military trips when I had to go to Texas, Nebraska or New Mexico when I had a class in San Antonio or was teaching a class in either Nebraska or New Mexico, I even drove it out to Fort Irwin in Barstow once with my Commander when we were overseeing some training out there, I just loved driving it, Like I said it one of my top 3 cars I ever had, there wasn't anything special about it but it was just a blast to drive.

In my home town, a cab companies fleet was made up of Darts and Swingers.They still had many of them on the road in the mid 90’s when they retired the last of them. The last 2 had more than 200,000 miles on them.

Original is way cool! I never knew there should be a small piece of felt on the trunk bracket for the jack until I got my 71 Swinger with 30k miles, white top, green car, multi-green interior, slant, great driver.

4 doors were great party cars, you didn`t have to lean forward to let your buddies out to piss. And that green color was common enough to not draw the attention from the law. And the slant six was cheap on gas and super reliable. Don`t ask me how I know that, I heard it from a friend.

I had a slew of these A bodies back in the 70s and 80s. 225ci to 360ci and everything in between. There is something charming about a Dart with a Slant Six. But not the electrical system. Voltage regulators and ignition resisters are my bane!

WHAT'S the 5:40 difference anyone? My 1970 knowledge starts and ends with the Valiant, also my daily driver since fresh outta high school in 2000. Slant Six car as well. Got her garaged for the first time ever over the winter to do a full seal set and some MUCH needed TLC

Two people have alluded to what it is… basically, the 1970 and 1971 grilles are the same, but also not the same. The hood emblem is also different - this car doesn’t have one at all currently.

When I was sanding down my 1972 Charger, the driver's side sail paint just went "poof" into dust and I didn't see a hint of primer. The car had been repainted once, and they seemed to just scuff the factory paint a bit before priming and painting. Only spot on the car that did that.

Add a 2&1/4 diameter exhaust pipe and gain 5+, h.p. & lbs. of torque. Which will improve mileage also and reduce exhaust manifold cracking. Convert it to hydraulic lifters, save 13 lbs. and eliminate need to adjust every 20k miles.

first car i drove was a k car reliant. My friend had a slant six dart four door that dart was superior in everyway except ac it was much faster which that's not a high bar more comfortable and I'm sure it's driving by every day where that reliant died to this day.

forgot about the left-threaded lug nuts on the left side... learned that one the hard way whilst taking off the snow tires... after I snapped off 2 or 3 lugnuts, my dad yelled at me... "you see that L on the end of the stud... that means they're left-hand threaded STUPID!" I was a 16 year old kid... what did I know...

​@DeadDodgeGarage Oh, there are multiple reasons. My grandfather had a 75 4 door Dart in black as one of his last cars, and it's the memories of him I cherish most. He won the money for it at the track. Lol. But, I have always been a fan of Chrysler greens, and he was a gas company driver who drove green Dodges for work. All the ones around here turned to dust.

I would restore this car to (mostly) showroom condition, along with: Full carpeting in the cabin and trunk to hide the DynaMat insulation. A Year One stereo unit in the dash. A Mopar Super Commando 360 Crate Engine, backed by a SERIOUSLY beefed-up Torque-Flite automatic with Gear Vendors 30-percent overdrive, and a 3.55-geared 'Dana 60 held down by Competition Engineering traction bars out back. Wilwood disc brakes would be behind Mopar Rallye wheels at all four corners. I'd finish it off with a full set of 90/10 shocks, also from Competition Engineering. The result? It would all add up to a GREAT sleeper that might not exactly scare away any 'Hemi Mopars, but it sure would stun some Japanese tuner cars every now and again at a red light.
