The active ingredient of the Betel nut is arecoline, a stimulant alkaloid (among others that are present) that stimulates the release of adrenaline, thus giving the numbing and euphoric sensation, and also gives a similar effect to nicotine due to its structure, hence the buzz feeling. I live in Hawaiʻi, where recent migrants from Micronesia chew betel nut in almost this exact same fashion (a lot of people even grow areca palms in their yard). Out of curiousity, I tried it once in my late teens when I was still too young to buy alcohol or tobacco, and it gave me mild lightheadedness in exchange for chewing one of the most bitter substances I’ve ever tasted. That being said, I can only imagine what it would be like to chew it after multiple days on an empty stomach.

I am so glad I came upon this this! Seriously I have a ton of those soup flavor packets I always keep them for this reason, and if case anyone has never done a fast exercise (meaning not eating for an extended period as part of a survival training or jungle training) those little packets with boiled water are pleasurable superfood on a whole new level of existence. When you have not eaten for a week and you get something like this oh man it's better than the best steak I have ever had. Of course that is based on the suffering and cramps that come before such a situation and is best done with a professional and doctor because that can be very dangerous so please don't do it just because I am saying it's good. It's good because I felt so bad. Thank you Les you are the person that taught me this.

I've watched EVERY single episode released, would love to see a new season. ALL of these new comers making shows don't compare, they make shows for views not to teach proper ways of survival.

Hi Les, thank you for sharing your survival experience in my country and other parts of the world too. Great content. I have subscribed and love watching all the episodes. In this episode, I love the part where you were chewing betel nut with lime and mustard leaves. I guess that was one heck of an experience you had. I believe you will never forget the experience. Thank you for coming to PNG, and sharing your experiences for others out there to see.

First of all thanks for shooting the video in PNG. Second of all this is not even the biggest forest of PNG you are in,I can see savannah it means it's the beginning of the forest. They didn't take you all the way in . And also as a Papua New Guinean I wish I was with you in the forest, we'll make a good survival and planty to eat .

When you opened up the can and got to the instructions on how to survive and sarcastically said “excellent” that was great. I immediately thought of your survival kit review video, and I must say I laughed so hard I almost needed instructions on how to breathe. 😂

Their giving you that beetle nut was the equivalent of a good friend sharing their "good stuff" with you; Quite an honor, if you think about it. Something you clearly reciprocated by honoring their tradition through your survival experience. Also - What an incredible honor to have been invited to, not only experience, but participate in and film their celebration.

Definitely the best survivalist on tv ever, he was so in touch with nature and doesn’t have a camera crew so truly alone this guy amazing, also remember watching survivorman on tv when I was growing up.
