Thanks for this video Susan. Im currently feeding my baby to sleep as it seems to be the only way to soothe him. The holding still for 5 min technique worked wonders! Put him on the bed, pat him on the bum, he stared at me with "what are you trying this time mum?" look and fell asleep. Thanks again for sharing!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU from mom to mom. Your video helped me so much with sleep training my 7 month old, I started from the first morning nap and then try the night. I followed your tips and it works like a charm ! She did skip first day first whole nap (not really skipped but cried it out) I kept her awake for half an hour and she went to sleep after. Also the first night was tough she would wake up every time she use to nurse, but I also followed your night time training tips and it was working. Next day and night was better and every next after that she would cry less and sleep longer. After 4-5 days she was sleeping perfectly all by herself all night long. And now (month later) she is doing great falling asleep all by her self, having couple good, long naps at day time and sleeping (without waking up) hole night. She is more rested and much happier and I feel like a new person, so rested and accomplished! Thank you and good luck to all mom's , trust me it is worth it (little "pain" for lot of gain for both you and the baby) !!!! :D

Hi Svetlana, oh my word... I see your post is 2 years ago, sorry but I have to ask, do you leave your baby to cry it out in the crib for the hour if she doesnt fall asleep ? or do you go in and soothe her every few minutes? and if she wakes after 10 minute nap as well...do you go in and try soothe or leave her ? If someone else maybe can respond as well .... in desperate need. many thnx

Thank you so much for an amazing video! My newborn baby wasn’t sleeping during the day - almost at all, or short 15 min naps. She was so fussy. I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized she wasn’t sleeping at all and she must have been overtired. I watched your video and I had to train her as if she was 4 months old. It worked like charm. First few weeks she only managed to sleep for an hour. Then it increased to 1.5h and now I have to wake her up after 2h nap. I had to come back on here and share my experience for new moms!

I think the biggest wrench into a consistent schedule is the baby refusing to go down when it’s time to.

yes! I always laugh when I see a 'sleep schedule'. When your baby doesn't go down for one of the planned naps, your 'schedule' goes down the drain. And you can be sure he won't go down for at least one nap. And even if so: they sure will wake too early for at least one of them.
@Momo-fx7tb

@@ellenmaes2480 that happens but the key is to be consistent and try to stick to the schedule as much as possible. Rose M Please don’t do that to you vulnerable baby. Babies are too young and don’t have the psychological faculties to develop self soothing skills so young. If you notice this video is all about forcing your baby to do this and that. Very unnatural. Emotionally developed cultures don’t subscribe to these shenanigans ... trying to turn babies into independent adults before they can even walk or talk right. Only in north America

As a preschool teacher I loved this video! Its all about having a schedule and helping children learn to self soothe. A little off topic but I have seen many older children start preschool having never been allowed to cry or tantrum or more then a few minutes before the parent gives in or tries to distract. These kids have the hardest time adjusting to school life as they lack the skills to deal with the negative emotions from change , sharing and not always being able to have your way.

He's 8 months old and he had bronchitis and the only way to get him to sleep was to hold and fees him. He is far too dependent on it. My son has been a horrible napper since he was 3 months old. He takes extremely short naps. What I'm doing that seems to be working is depending on how he's acting, try and let him continue his nap by crying it out a little, but if it doesn't work, get him up to play for a little bit and then start all over.

Yes!!! We have a saying in my country, and that is that you can't spoil a baby. When the child is 6 months to a year is when parents usually start finding a routine that fits with them and their schedule. I use the sleep train method... When you see signs of tiredness, help your baby find sleep. If you miss that train, you will have an overtired baby, that just won't sleep for a while...

Man I have to say that for naps, we had to take a more gentle approach. Because we'd get in a vicious cycle where if he didn't take good naps during the day, it'd mess up his night sleep cuz he was overtired. So we had to do a gentle approach for nap training where we would try different strategies to help him fall asleep in the crib for his nap (we had to work on switching him from swing to crib). So we would try to lay him in his crib and if it didn't work, we'd go back to the swing. Sometimes it'd work, sometimes it wouldn't. But eventually it took. Then we would work on putting him in his crib drowsy but awake, but if he didn't fall asleep within 5-10min, we'd cuddle him to sleep. Eventually he'd fall asleep in his crib. It took a long time (several months) but it worked! Now he's 11 months and falls asleep easily in his crib by himself and takes great naps!

I'm going through the same thing right now and I'm at a loss. I used to be able to breast feed my baby to sleep for nap time, but for whatever reason that doesn't work anymore and he only falls asleep in the sling. How long did you usually wait after trying to get your baby to sleep in the crib did you switch him to the sling? And at about how long did it take till he would at least sometimes sleep in his cot? Also, did you have a (loose) nap schedule? I'm at a bit of a loss here.

11JadeStone11 hi. Mine is 4 months now and finally started falling asleep for her naps and night sleep alone. It took me 2 months of gentle training to avoid any cry it out. I guess the key is to set a rouitine both for naps and sleep. I would put her in her swaddle me size M or L, then darken the room, walk with her and sing, put white noise or birds noise and put her down and give her her tou she associated witj sleep. Always works. First she would cry and fuss, If the cry is gentle I let her cry for 1-5 min. But if she cries a lot I take her and rock her a bit and put her down again. If doesn’t work I put her in her rocking chair. Took her 2 months to learn it (yes I had to nurse her sometimes too if she kept crying hahahah)

This video has so many contradictory statements. "Pay attention to your intuition", "let them cry for at least an hour until they try to sooth themselves to sleep" (I don't think that's intuitive for any mom), "go with the flow", "force them to stay awake for at least 30 minutes", etc. Also, I've read babies need to know the difference between day and night, why making the room completely dark for a nap during the day? If you go out and the baby has to take a nap at a restaurant for example, how are you going to make everything go dark? Last thing, I really felt this was the wrong thing for me when she said "the baby is gonna think: oh finally I can go to sleep, I'm in mama's arms"... as if it's a bad thing. This is what precisely shows these methods are not compatible with the baby's natural needs and biological stages.

I don't believe in having a schedule for my son, I let him decide when he wants to nap and sleep and he created his own routine. I've let him cry up yo 30 mim and he doesn't go back to sleep.A few times he has done 2 2 hr naps and 1 30 min which is the goal, but for the last couple weeks I can't get him to consistently do the desired schedule. I've tried so many things. I started sleep training around 1.5 months and in a few days he had it down and was sleeping through the night. I already keep him up for 2 hours and sometimes more to b sure he's tired, his room is dark, we have a sound machine, the temperature is regulated. I'm open to ANY suggestions.

My LO is 4.5 months. She wakes around 7:30-8 then change eats plays and down around 10-11 ish. She is just now showing patterns for naps. I slacked with the schedule until now. And I definitely agree with sleeping until 4:30. Sometimes it’s really hard to get her to take good naps because she is teething a ton. Hopefully we get better

For one hour you should not pick your baby up from the crib, then keep her awake for at least 30min after you do (or longer if baby is not tired) and then do it all over again for a second nap.

As a first time father, I am eager to get started on this training, but I noticed your's and others recommendation saying 4-6 months being the time when babies can start. Is near 4 months okay? Like 3 1/2? Also, how did your husband eventually convince you this was the right thing to do? My wife has done a lot of research as well and she is set in her ways. She disagrees with a few of your suggestions, for example white noise machine and awake during feeding, by saying they don't work.

I starter to sleep staining my 4 months old as he would not sleep anywhere else just while breastfeeding (feeling my boobies) even at night . Couldn’t take it any longer. Now after a week or so he knows when is a bed time and he doesn’t really cry that much 2 minutes the. Is just talking to himself and falling asleep. The best thing I ever did for him and myself. He is more happy now as he is getting better rest at nights . Thank you for your videos !!!

Nap time question. After crying for about 15 minutes, baby falls asleep for 20 minutes and then she wakes up crying. She can cry 45 minutes to one and a half hours, what do I do then? During this time, we go in her room every 10 to 15 minutes and say we love you but it's naptime but she continues to cry.

What do you at night when your baby wakes at almost 6 months? Do you leave him until he cries? What if he's awake because he's wet? My boy doesn't cry when he's wet or poopy, he just lays there awake. How long would you leave awake and quiet at night? I know how important sleep is and I can't sleep knowing he's awake (subconscious problem of mine). Everyone says he should be sleeping around 10-12 hours a night but what if he's in his crib for that long but has only slept 7 or 8? That will effect his napping during the day because he'll get over tired faster, right?

Thanks for the video. Question: So I put my four and half months baby down for her scheduled naptime. She is sleepy level 5 (as you say in the video), when I put her in her crib. After this she takes approx 10 mins to fall asleep. Should I wake her up at the scheduled wake time, or push wake time by 10 mins? Or should I put her down in her crib 10 mins earlier so she falls asleep at the right time?

I started to nap training after watching this video and just have few questions. My baby can fall asleep independently for naps with little to no fuss, however, he does not usually nap for longer than 30 minutes. He will put himself back to sleep after 15-30 minutes of fussing and will sleep for an hour. Is that consider a good nap? When he wakes up after an hour should I let him try to go back to sleep? Most of the information suggests that baby should nap at least 2 hour per cycle. I keep his room dark, sleep sack, have white noise, small nap routine and put him down at the same time.

Naps are bad for kids. I have twins. They never would nap because one would wake the other up. We saw parents rush home or stop what they were doing to go home. It’s a bad habit. It’s better for your kids to be cranky and just pass out tired at the end of the day. We trained our kids to just take a quick nap in the car or if we were at a party etc on the floor. Our friends 5 year old just stopped taking naps. He has major withdrawals from it and it causes problems. When my kids were babies we never let them yell or scream in public places. If we were at a restaurant I would take them outside. They stopped shortly after that. It’s all about training your kids..

Don’t leave a baby to cry for an hour for God’s sake! :( Babies can fight naps but soothe them with some gentle rocking and sshing and put them down sleepy but awake to settle. My baby loves a little piece of muslin to hold as she settles. If baby starts crying wait for a minute or two and if it doesn’t stop soothe again. I do this for 20 mins and if no joy we then go downstairs and try again later. Baby is quite good at going down for naps now. Even cry it out only leaves babies crying from 5 mins. An hour is so stressful, if your baby goes asleep after 40 mins it’s probably from exhaustion of the stress. Most I’ve left babs is 5 minutes proper crying just because she’s having a bad day and I need to calm down to deal with her.

I started sleep training my baby last night using the same program (Natalie Willes, BST) I most probably am going to nap train as well as the books says. I just have question/concern, if my baby's on a strict nap/sleep schedule and I am not allowed to put my baby in a car seat or stroller since this is considered sleep assistance. How exactly am I suppose to ever run errands with my baby or bring my baby to the mall during the day or weekends? She's going to eventually join my husband and I during the weekend or family events, I don't think I'll ever be able to prevent her from sleeping in either the car seat or her stroller, so how do I go about this? Thanks,
