Hi! I just wanted to add that you can say, "Itadakimasu (いただきます)," before you eat. It's translated to "I humbly receive," it's not a prayer, but it's to show respect to the life given so that you can eat and to acknowledge the work it took to get the food to your plate. Traditionally you put your two hands together while you say it, but nowadays people just say it quietly to themself and towards the food. If you're at someone's house and they cooked for you, definitely direct it at them. After the meal you can also say, "Gochisousama deshita (ごちそうさまでした)," which translates to "it was a feast" as a way to thank the sushi chef for the omakase. You can also put your hands together as well for this one, but nowadays people omit the action and just say the words.

May I ask u a question? Excuse my ignorance but why do we have to complicate our dining? We got such a complicated life and in general I wanna just pass by a restaurant, have my food and pay the bill! I don’t wanna jump from my pants caring about mental health of a chief who makes his job done which is cooking! We aren’t living somewhere like a hundred years ago to do whatever in order to be accepted by this or that group of society… Especially when the group of ppl are employees of a restaurant since a restaurant exists for consumers and not otherwise
@rebeccaedmonds61048 ай бұрын
@@jilinak I think that depends on circumstance better to know what to do if necessary. Than be ignorant. You don't have to do it all the time, but if put in a situation where you would be frowned at and not accepted better that at least we can pretent, we know as we have watched, the etiquette videos. It's up to u some people don't care and they don't want to change but just to be accepted. Sigh it gets complicated. Just do what you love 😍.
@Xantosdude8 ай бұрын
@@jilinak It's an interesting question. Why complicate something that should be so simple? The best answer is that society is complicated. You absolutely have to play by societies rules to be accepted, If you show up naked, the restaurant wouldn't even let you in, let alone serve you. Why wouldn't they serve you if you're a paying customer, albeit naked if a restaurant exists for consumers and not otherwise? The restaurant values customers as a whole and not the individual. Thus if you scare other customers away, they'll make less money and they'll deny you entry. Whether it's by screaming randomly, shooting guns into the air, or being a general disturbance by being naked.
@jilinak8 ай бұрын
@@Xantosdude having morals and caring of chief sensitivity souls aren’t something similar… My question was more about having and enjoying your food but not thinking about what I should avoid in order to “respect” a guy who cooked this food for me… It doesn’t mean I can come there and insult ppl but it shouldn’t be like oh if I use soya souse now or later just to keep the cook in a mental peace, u know what I mean?

With all due respect based on how I have been educated to use chopsticks it is not correct to hold the chopsticks with the two crossing one another in the X shape. They are supposed to parallel. Correct me if I’m wrong and Would really appreciate it if any Japanese viewers could help clarify please.

20:50 I'm not sure about this because when it comes to nigiri, especially salmon & tuna, the chef already put wasabi below the "blanket" aka between the salmon and the rice, right underneath. So I think directly put it on top is definitely not what the chef intended.

Jamila, thank you for this video. It is so informative. I do have a question: I have a very small mouth and also cannot swallow large amounts of food. Even a large vitamin supplement may cause choking. Eating an entire piece of sushi is just not possible for me. Is there anything I can do, like slicing the piece of sushi in half? This is what I do when eating sushi at home. 😊

Im not an expert on high class etiquette, so cant help you there, but at least in more informal setting nigiri sushi such as salmon (oval/rectangular piece of rice with a slice of salmon on top) is ok to eat in 2 or even 3 bites, since youre not messing anything up. Just remember to not place your half-eaten nigiri down on your plate. So, pick up a nigiri sushi with your chopsticks (dont place your chopsticks right in the middle, but a little bit to the side. Say, 1/3 of the sushi on the side where your hand is, chopsticks in the middle, and 2/3 of the sushi ”hanging” out on the other side. This way youll have room to take a bite without the chopsticks getting in the way.). Take a reasonable sized bite, but keep holding on to the sushi, dont set it down! Chew and swallow without hurry, and then finish the rest. Usually 2 bites should be enough, aka eating only half at a time, but if your mouth is very small and the piece is very big, 3 should be fine too. Nigiri is easy to break, it doesnt usually have nori (seaweed) for example, which is chewy and hard to break. In maki sushi (round rolls), dividing the sushi into more than one bite you are messing it up, since not every bite will have all the ingredients etc. Its also wrapped in nori, which is designed to keep ingredients in one compact bite. So breaking it apart is not only physically difficult, it is quite inelegant :(( So I rly cant help there, sorry :/. If you go to a fancy sushi place where having good etiquette actually matters, one would imagine them to also be proficient enough to make ”correct” aka small enough sushi pieces. Only places I’ve been to where maki sushi has been too large to eat in one bite have been western buffets, where having high class etiquette would actually probably be considered gaudy. Sushi should never stand around in a buffet anyway, so not a place to be bougie either. Hope this helped at least a bit

Just one suggestion: When you talked about japanese restaurants in other parts of the world, you only mentioned US and Europe, but there are 36 countries in the American continent alone, and they all have this kind of restaurants. I would appreciate a lot if you to say "American continent" whenever you refere to this part of the globe. But that´s just a tiny detail, I appreciate your videos a lot.

Interesting! I was taught to eat nigiri the following way: you separate the fish from the rice and dip it in soy sauce. Then you put a bit of Wasabi on top of the rice and place the fish above. I really love the taste of it and do it ever since. But now I wonder if it would be considered rude to do it at a fine dining or traditional restaurant. Because you said that you should not separate the ingredients from each other. But in this case you put them back together afterwards. What is your opinion about it? I would appreciate an answer, thank you. ❤️
@Xantosdude8 ай бұрын
Hello! In a traditional setting, Omakase (お任せ) means "I'll leave the details to you." If you request this and start slathering on more wasabi, it can be quite insulting to the chef after you've just requested his expertise. However, in a traditional setting, usually wasabi isn't given to you on the side to help yourself. The simple reason is that real wasabi is extremely expensive. 95% of restaurants use a mix of horseradish, mustard powder, and green food coloring. Real wasabi comes from the rhizome root and is one of the most difficult to commercially grow root out there. 1kg or ~2lbs of real Japanese wasabi can cost anywhere between $300-400USD. Also real wasabi must be ground fresh using a shark skin or stingray leather NOT metal (as the metal graters cannot be fine enough). That being said, in most other settings, it can be seen as playing with your food to deconstruct and reconstruct your nigiri. It's far easier to take some with your chopsticks and just put it on top of the fish.

You left out quite a few things. But protecting the delicate dining surface is very important because it is the most irreparable. If I were your chef, I would be very upset watching move your hand and wrist around with those rings, watch, and bracelet on and putting surface scratches all over the beautiful Cypress wood. Also, you forgot to mention: NEVER slide anything (like a cup or plate, essentially anything, like you did at 6:56 to 7:09) across the dining surface - it will damage the finish and wood. ALWAYS gently lift objects and even more gently place them back down. Eating at the Sushi bar is an elegant and graceful experience that is not to be taken lightly. It is NOT a social event, it is more a spiritual experience, but in a less religious sense.
