SUSHI Serving TRAY / How to / Woodworking

In this video I'll show how I made a Serving Tray from Reclaimed Wood from old pine shelves. I used sliding dovetails for the base. I choose one of my prefered finishes: Shou-Sugi-Ban (焼杉板) also known as Yakisugi which adds really deep texture on soft woods as pine or cedar, besides an awesome protection for wood.

Que maravilla. De una simple tabla de pino consigues sacarle la belleza mas profunda que naturalmente tiene. Las veces que he quemado madera de pino (y no lo he hecho con tanta intensidad) se me ha agrietado al acercarle el soplete, y es madera seca, me he fijado y prácticamente a ti no te ha ocurrido. Dan ganas de poner en práctica este tratamiento. Magnífico trabajo.

Imagino que hay varios factores a tener en cuenta. Para empezar hay centenares de especies de pino. Este que utilizé tiene por lo menos 40-50 años. No tenía precisamente muy buena calidad ya que algunas piezas albergaban nudos o bolsas de resina. Imagino que la pieza también aguanta mejor estructuralmente gracias a las patas en cola de milano que transcurren en perpendicular de la dirección de la veta. A parte, esas uniones iban muy ajustadas precisamente para minimizar deformidades debidas al calor. Aún así algunas de las piezas se han deformado sensiblemente aunque en la dirección adecuada, consiguiendo una leve concavidad muy adecuada para una bandeja. Indeed. That piece of pine was really dry. Not shown on video but I applied 3 coats of my own blend wax buffing between coats. Regards.
