這類文化主題短片很酷,不僅是討論「英國文化」。蘇格蘭、威爾士、英格蘭、北愛爾蘭,甚至愛爾蘭在語言、民族、文化與社會感覺都有著截然不同的風貌,期待Susie繼續分享多元的主題!

I visited Edinburgh in June thisyear, Edinburgh has a rich history, most of building in Old Town have remained in their original from over the years. After that journey, I studied a lot of history between Scotland and England. Really respect to their culture. Love Scotland and will definitely go again 👍

1. The Scots dialect is actually a mix between Lowland Scots, Northumbrian Old English and modern English rather than Gaelic. The grammar and pronunciation of Lowland Scots are so close to modern English that you can almost read them directly. In contrast, Gaelic grammar and pronunciation are quite different from English. I would say Gaelic's grammatical rules are close to Russian. Robert Burns wrote many poems in Lowland Scots; you can read them if you want. Examples: 'Should auld acquaintance be forgot/We twa hae run about the braes' in Auld Lang Syne and 'Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware [...] if ye wish her gratefu' prayer Gie her a haggis!' in Address to a Haggis. 2. As a Scottish studies scholar, I can say that the kilt and tartan we see today did not exist in Scotland until the 16th century. Modern kilt and tartan were invented by the Highland romantic revival, inspired by James Macpherson's Ossian poems and the writings of Sir Walter Scott in the 19th century. The visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822 also brought a sudden demand for tartan cloth and made it the national dress of the whole of Scotland, rather than just the Highlands and Islands, with the invention of many new clan-specific tartans to suit.

Hi Andrew, thank you for all the useful info! It's very interesting and helpful to get a scholarly input. We are so lucky in Scotland to have the music and poetry that we do. I am a fan of "Ye Banks and Braes" by Robert Burns. It is a lovely one to part sing with friends.

苏格兰口音好听。爱丁堡和格拉斯哥都有很多漂亮的建筑,尤其是市中心。苏格兰风笛高亢嘹亮,很好听。苏格兰高地舞服装也很美。 格拉斯哥人好像不喜欢爱丁堡人。这一点很像苏格兰人不喜欢英格兰人。他们说,爱丁堡有一样好东西,那就是开往格拉斯哥的火车。

Nice Video! Pal, which is quite subtle。 Half the time it's meant genuinely. 这是本地人跟我说的:"If ''pal' is said with a strong inflection on the ‘P’, then you're in trouble". 爱丁堡口音可以看猜火车 Trainspotting.

Hi Tang, great to hear you live in Glasgow! I have lots of family there, I love the Kelvingrove art gallery. As much as I love a strong Scottish accent, I would agree that they can be very difficult for non scots and especially non native speakers to understand. The word "pal" is a good one and I would say that the equivalent in many parts of England is "mate." Like "pal" it can be used in a friendly or aggressive way.

The Scots would not like to hear that Scots is just a variation of English! Have ye no heard of the school of Scottish studies, Hamish Henderson, Hugh McDiarmid (Chris Grieve) et al? That " 'ch" sound would NOT come naturally for a LOT of Chinese people (whether you're speaking Cantonese or Mandarin and/or Taiwanese). I actually had to learn it from a combination of Polish, Russian, Arabic, and Hebrew before starting to get CLOSE to being able to pronounce that syllable. On the contrary though, there are also a LOT of Chinese syllables/sounds that doesn't exist naturally in many of the Roman/Latin-based languages neither. My wife and my tiny humans, sometimes, struggle with some of the pronounciation of Cantonese words that I grew up with, such as 莲蓉飽. Whenever I try to Romanise it, it just becomes a jumbled mess, so I've told both my wife and my tiny humans that it's just easier for them to learn it phonetically.
@xingyu1386

Ch is very natural for mandarin speakers. The mandarin 'h' is exactly pronounced as scottish CH. like 和, if you listen to how TV presenters from CCTV (the chinese central tv) pronounce 和, you will notice it is Ch rather than english h. But because chinese don't distinguish h, and many chinese dialects use the softer H, so lot of native speakers choose the 'lazy' h. Also, young people influenced by english tends to use h more than Ch. but people in my parents' generation almost always use CH. I live in scotland, when i first taught my scottish friend 和, they noticed the difference immediately from a cctv video clip. They actually pointed out that i've been using softer 'h', that's how i noticed CCTV presenters use ch while i've been 'wrong' the whole time.
@ewenchan1239
@ewenchan1239 2 жыл бұрын
@@xingyu1386 My apologies - by "ch" I mean more like the Arabic or Hebrew "kh". For example, the German last name, "Bach", -- the 'ch' in that is a guttural "kh". So instead of pronouncing "Bach" as "Back", the German pronounciation -- the "ch" in that is almost like the 'h' sound in "hua". (It's really hard to convey the pronounciation with the English alphabet.) The Hebrew ח (as in לחיים), is a voiceless uvular fricative. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_uvular_fricative) To pronouce the Hebrew לחיים (L'chaim) -- the 'ch' in that, as I understand it, is not "natural" to Chinese (or at least Cantonese. I don't know about Mandarin.) (cf. How to pronounce L'chaim? - kzbin.info/www/bejne/emmWf3uQhMiBaLc) Thanks.

sorry i thought you meant the scottish 'ch' as in loch, because the guest is from scotland. The scottish ch is Voiceless velar fricative at least as documented on wikipedia - i'm no expert in this field. she pronounced it with a little bit much trill though.
