Love your content! I live in the US and I can totally relate to what you're saying, since people here are saying a lot of things similarly. To me it's all about the context. Chinese language can be like that as well. Words can carry different meanings in varying occasions. One thing about English or Irish people though: what they are saying can be brutal and brutally funny at the same time!

I also saw this article on the internet before! Thanks for this explanatory video and the algorithm of KZbin, it is helpful for a prospective foreign student who is gonna study in Glasgow in 3 months from now. Look forward to knowing British more from this channel, which must be able to raise my survival chance over there hahaha
Thank you for being the bridge between different cultures, which is really lacking in the mainstream media...

Thank you so much. I moved to the UK for 6 years and lived in an English family. I am still sometimes confused about the cultural related issues. Your videos are very helpful for me to understand the English culture better. 🌺
I believe that TONALITY determines the true meaning of what people really want to convey, either in a positive or negative way. We generally consider British as cold, indirect and distant but Susie might be an exception.

Thank you for your programs. I really enjoy them. I think most of these are rooted in being polite, well-mannered, and respectful. It is all about not putting others in a difficult position or embarrassing others. I think those are rather civilized way to interact with eachother in the global setting.

Interesting. It's like 好 in 國語. or 賀 in 台語. It can mean a lot or nothing. It's just like "maybe yes, maybe no, maybe I don't know". Useful, in any culture.

Agree with you. When the time you are trying to understand someone else, you need to also pay attention to their tone when the time they are saying it. It is common to ALL languages and countries, not only limited to UK. I think the problem for new English users is that when the time they are communicate with English users, they are too nervous and only focus on the words but missed the tone.

Many thanks for your sharing 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤Really awesome unit.
Another example you raised regarding “accepting responsibility by saying it’s my fault” reflects one of many cultural differences between Chinese and English language. 說反話對大部份人來說是一種無法抗拒的智慧和能力。正所謂「聲東擊西」或「指桑罵槐」甚至「說出來不代表心裡想的」已經深深融入中文的博大精深之中。

People should throw away those stereotypes and let themselves live in the moment and sincerely interact with others, so that you can get the real connection and build a healthy and normal conversation. Language isn't like maths, every one can interpret a sentence in lots of different ways. It's always better just to get involved and figure out what they mean by yourself.

I like you keep normal speaking speed, really help to practice my listening skills.
I’ve always been interested in this topic. And sometimes I feel it’s a bit difficult to understand British humour Thanks in advance!

Can I ask you a question, 舒萱? I just heard my friend said yesterday that, his son told him when he said "I'm ok" to the receptionist if his dentist when she asked if he could accept Tuesday when he asked Monday first, she cut off his line, means that the receptionist took it that he didn't want the appointment. I personally think "I'm ok" can means different things in different scenarios, but my friend said his son who is an English teen-ager, it only means *I don't need it". Can you explain more please?

Many thanks for explaining these subtleties in English so clearly. From my experience, this knowledge could take a non-first language speaker many years living in English culture to grasp.
I like your accent and your video but there's one thing I want to say. It's just my own opinion, no offense, I don't know if any others are thinking in the same way. That is the subtitle. it's a kind of distraction. You have two subtitles simultaneously, and as a language learner, I want to see the English part. The Chinese part, it's only be needed when I don't understand the meaning. Farther more, adding the subtitle is also distracting to the listening as well. I have seen other KZbinrs separated the subtitle and video. The subtitle will only be shown when you press the button on the right-side down corner. Once again, It is just my personal opinion, no offense. Maybe you have a different concern. Thank you for reading and great video!
真是很好的解释!其实和英国人说话时还是不明白对方真实的意思。有没有可能英国人都比较随和,其实不用太在意他们怎么想?当他们说 that's interesting, 只是表明他在听你说。It's not bad 只是说他觉得可以,无所谓。It's my fault 就是说让它过去吧,怨就怨我吧。If you don't mind 就是说随便吧。

《論語》:視其所以,觀其所由,察其所安,人焉廋哉?人焉廋哉? 原文釋義 (了解一個人)看他言行的動機,觀察他整個行動的經過,考察他安於什麼,這樣一個人怎麼能隱藏得了呢?一個人怎麼能隱藏得了呢? 英文翻譯 《Confucian Analects》:See what a man does, observe the roads he has followed, examine in what things he rests, how can a man conceal his real self ? How can a man conceal his real self?

I agree with you 100%. So, I hopefully feedback something positive to you. This kind of irony happens to Chinese. e.g. Someone asks Peter's feeling about Helen. If Peter replies that she is a kind girl. Many Chinese speakers think this reply implies Helen is ugly, or financially poor. That's not true cause , to me, I mean Helen has truly kind personal traits. That's it.🙌🙌🙌
