Thank you very much Susie for explaining this interesting topic to us! Would you mind having another video talking about another related topic, Downton Abbey the British TV drama? I'm curious how British people think about this drama as it seems quite popular. Does it reflect a certain kind of mixed feeling of curiosity and admiration from the audience?

Yes, in Downton Abbey it seems to me that class division in Britain is very serious, you have the noble that doesn't need to work the land and people who worked for the nobles, but at the end of the series, we are seeing how society is changing since the First World War.

I think we can’t categorise people base on their wealth, but conduct ,behaviour and attitude of a person would determine with his or her quality. People as like yourself has an excellent quality and very graceful attitude. I am impressed
It's a very nice piece. Feeling so much consonant here. I have struggled a couple times to explain to some of my Chinese new immigrant friends (usually didn't go well) how the system is working here, why they don't have to so obsessively pursue a higher social economical status or classes, don't necessarily squeeze out every single pocket coin sending the kids to private schools... Behind these bunch of behaviors actually there are something even bigger in the mindsets, like stereotyping people by their ID of class, race, ethnicity, panicking to living in a sunburb seeing more poor people or lower class/race moving in, politically tend to conservative which is totally fine, but more like a remnant in the mind of believing in absolute power other than democracy. I v been diving into such an ideological world and trying to understand its bottom logic. Simply people have their mindsets established from their life or survival experience. They believe in power in a whole, not necessarily distinguish power, money or class as they treat them the same thing which can guarantee them safe, extra resources, and supremacy to others. All these are deeply rooted to a society with a highly unificated power - totalitarianism. No strange a highly hierarchy society in history usually was also a monarchy country. Modern societies have evolved with a more diversified value system which allows people can live their lives with a more individual and personal way. It's the base of the freedom and thriving.

I was wondering if the background is CG then I saw the sun ray changed and realized Susie is in that house. It is interesting to me because most of the time I saw British flats are small, people living in such a big house must be extrordinary wealthy. Then Susie said it is not her house...

It is human nature to seek status, power, recognition and money. Lots of my friends around me are striving for them, some are British, and some are non-British. E.g., one is my PostDoc Supervisor who is British, is now CBE, FRS, FMedSci, Non-executive director of companies and Professor at a top UK University. Essentially, they just want to feel good about themselves. ❤
Have you read "Watching the English" by Oxford anthropologist Kate Fox? It could give you interesting topics to talk about. Of course, I enjoy your discussions too.
In general, the class system is easily to be branded in our preception. Sometimes, people are hardly patient to fit in with other people interacting, thus the people are distinguished by those stereotype. Social type is always not related with me, but I still want to participate to the community. Because of the lack of success what drive me to complete more achievement in my life. I still want to fit in the good class.

The Brits might be very subtle to talk about class, but it does exist. Just check out Central, West and East London, and you can easily experience the distinctive gap.

Very interesting discussion and part of it amusing.😊It seems rather anachronistic that there are still people out there these days who are still concerned about their social status without realizing that even noble birth is totally meaningless. After all, you can't choose your birth but what really matters is what you do. You would never see the real super rich brag because they don't need to do. If they are decent, they devote their energy on a cause rather on vanity.

It's really interesting to learn about the stereotypes regarding social classes in the UK! I find it particularly convincing when these perspectives come from a native in England. I'd like to discuss the quote you mentioned: "There are fun people and arsehole people scattered throughout the income and class sections of society." However, I believe that things are quite different in Asia or Hong Kong. I admit that this is a sensitive topic, but based on my observations, individuals from the middle-class or upper-class (I am referring only to income here) are more likely to be open-minded or "fun" in nature. This is because they often have greater opportunities to pursue higher education, study abroad, or travel, which contribute significantly to their knowledge, experiences, and personalities. While it is still possible for individuals from lower-income families to be "fun," it is generally more challenging in Hong Kong or Asia, at least in my opinion. Thanks for sharing, Susie!

I don't think you need to be educated and experienced to be a kind person. And on the contrary, I have been seeing a lot of kind people who are so willing to give, but just because they are so willing to give their resources away, they don't have enough savings to enjoy themselves.

Thanks for sharing Susie! My result is Elite, but I think it's mostly due to how much money/ asset I have. The US, with its comparatively lower taxes, might be a tad easier to build wealth in than the UK. Choosing where to live can reshape one's life, and often, it's a choice many don’t even realize they're making. I once took a leap from Beijing to West Africa in pursuit of opportunities, and that journey led to a scholarship at University of Notre Dame (US), and eventually I decided to live in the US. I built my financial freedom over the course of seven years, and now I no longer work for money. Today, after teaching at Arizona State and launching my own businesses, I'm crafting videos to champion financial literacy and inspire others. I always wonder: if not for that first leap, where would I be? 🌍📚🎥🌱

Well, what I feel here is that quite a few guys in both working class and upper class don't wanna stay inside their own class that much, since working class guys have to face their inflating consumer prices, food prices, utility bills and transport spends, and even struggling to rent their own home if they live in south England, meanwhile upper class guys have to face their 40% or even 45% tax let alone other taxes like VAT. One of my ex-girlfriend 15 years ago she stayed and studied in UCL for 8 years, I have no idea about her class should be counted in London according to that. But my favors and tastes are quite old-school and kind of "jazz-classical era" should I call, a little bit "regular" things in literate styling. I'm not sure how to tell.
