It's very touching when hear you sharing about attitude against misunderstanding/ stereotypes. Cant agree more that "get to know the person individually" is the best solutions to stereotypes. we are all blessed to have some some proper friendships.
Finally everyone will find the group that you own. Enjoy that and happy to pass every day. Thanks for sharing.

Susie you are very serious answering some comments with discriminations and stereotype I think some of them could happen in Asia countries.... But still, thank you for your lessons and introductions about English & English cultures I like your videos!! Don't be frustrated, those are just hateful comments! You are the best teacher and friend at least for me :D Thank you again :D

my own observation on what’s unique about Britain is that it’s a country of understatement, overstatement is often just lighthearted humour or banter.

I’m so agree with the point, that you tried to leave away from your native friends, and to accept Chinese friends. But after that, felt so lonely. I also tried to do that when I came to uk and Japan. And at the end, I felt so lonely.😂

It feels so funny when you apology for others🥰. People shower or not mostly depend on their living conditions, low income communities may have a few more people not regularly taking shower, but definitely not the case for the whole society.
A very nice and informative video, really enjoy. In general, Asian is rather hard to make friend with British, however, it is easily to get strong bonding with other European. While I was a student in the UK in mid 90s, I felt British students did not tend to connect to any other overseas students. I guess it might not be the case now as people know each other country people more from the internet.

When I was in high school, my family hosted some Scottish high school students for home stay. I hanged out with them and got into a typical game center near my apartment. I told them even the game center is so close to where I live, I had never paid to play attractions there because I enjoyed my game console at home. One of the boys said I was natural. I supposed that he wanted to tease me about being not modernized :) but I did not have enough humor to banter. I wished I did.

imho, I feel that regardless of where we are from, there is bound to be some who do not represent us very well. I'm from Singapore and I've got my fair share of brushes with rude British expatriates who live and work here. Some are self-entitled and downright condescending when they interact with local Singaporeans, or towards someone they deem to be of lower socio-economic status or perhaps workplace subordinates. However, I'm sure there are plenty of warm and welcoming people in the UK, just that a small minority who reside overseas may misrepresent and paint a negative picture of themselves. I really like the way Susie speaks, which is clear and polite. I certainly hope to meet more UK friends like her :)

27 years in the UK for me. 3 years in a public school in Cambridge. 3 years in Stoke-on-Trent, 2 years in Bradford, and 19 years in Leeds. Well, 11 months in Denmark in between.
The problem with "Brits do not shower" may start from people in the UK mostly shower in the morning, and that's a pretty difference in the UK and Asian culture.

Hi Susie nice to meet you again! Your new video is interesting and especially I like the "rat experiment" part. However, an obvious objection to this theory (when applying to human beings) is that not only the English ancestors experienced trauma - for example, can you say the Chinese group didn't have trauma during WW2? At least, I don't think so. My negative impression of Brits is also that they seem distant to strangers. Like one Scottish friend of mine said: When told the social distance is 2m, the English keep it 5m. 🤫😆

I think the class system will continue to be there, but yes, definitely in a different way, like it is "evolving".
I like the mean and harsh conservation between the Crawley family, especially Violet's quotes in Downton Abbey. Is that British humour?
Thanks for the subs. Couple of thoughts. (a) I find that civic identity is a big reason why people are passionate about sports, but English soccer fans are in a class all its own. To me that is the one population where I find the level of anti-American hate is appalling. Other than that my experience with Brits has been extremely positive. Once I got the hang of their humor then things started clicking. (b) British humor has what we call a “long fuse” which takes some getting used to. If you’re not aware it could easily go over your head. It kinda lacks a level of spontaneity in American humor and I can see how it can be confused with a dig at times. But again, once you get to know people for who they are, all of that just becomes a part of their personhood.

I absolutely knew one of the most interesting thing is normally the brits including brummies are normally don’t share their own feelings directly no matter how things get worse. Once I arrived in Birmingham, I kinda feel like no one had played such irritating jokes just like in my previous home.
(反映=reflection;反應=response/reaction) the latter one be what you meant to write, I assume.

As an international student but Taiwanese, I would say it is important to respect diverse culture shock. I don't take it to heart when some people make a joke about me. Instead, I would try to understand what motivation behind this joke by hanging out more times with them. Most of the time, jokes they make are harmless and funny, to be honest. The stereotype is a barrier that impedes you from getting involved with a native speaker or native speaker to get to know about us. More communication, more understanding.
I think for the last one, I will say generally for people who are always nice could give people those feelings - creating distance. I mean at first when I think oh they are very polite and friendly, but when I try to do some friends activities with them, it just never happens. For example, many of the time when i asked some british friends out, they were like ''yeah defo up for it'', but when it came to actually plan the time or something, they were like sorry blah blah blah. So I kinda don't really ask my British friends out now unless they ask me first. I am just getting very skeptical haha

I think the keyword is baggage. If you look at the history of UK many generations have experienced perhaps the most significant ups and downs compared to many other countries, at least in the past several hundreds years. You can definitely put class system in this topic, but it's more so how this baggage is being carried down through generations. I have been to UK once in my teens and later met many British at work or other settings and they are all just ordinary people making their ways through their lives. At the end of the day, if you attempt to just know a person, you'll realize we as human share way more in common. Behind each stereotypes so much it's just human nature as a response to the circumstances. It's privilege for me to be able to travel and experience many different places at a young age and I did it with open mind. Over time I came to the conclusion that it takes effort and willingness to become an empathetic person. If more people put some more efforts into understanding each other, our society could've been so much more amicable. Perhaps a bit too much optimism in today's political climate. BTW Susie you've done a great job bridging cultures. Keep doing what you doing!
Apart from the word ‘Interesting’, I realise many British people will use rhetorical question at the end to show they are listening or paying attention.
Hi Susie, my friend told me that beckon the waitstaff in England is impolite and you can only through eye contact to call the waitstaff to serve you. Is that true? N why?

I don't know if this is a stereotype or simply a fact. The crime rate in England is just higher than normal. I'm talking about the crimes related to something like fatal stabbings by teenagers, vehicles or their parts being stolen, alcohol-related violence, hooligans and vandalism, etc. The court sentences are too lenient in general to deter the offenders. For example, in some murder cases committed by teenagers, the offenders are just sentenced to some ten years' imprisonment or so. The courts haven't reacted to the safety concern of the public.

Sorry for the part you’ve mentioned about being lonely in shanghai.
I think the title is a bit ambitious, at least to me. British people, in general, are polite, yet distant, don't express their feeling/opinions openly and directly, and keep the social boundary. It is more evident and pervasive in the UK. To put it simply, they have baggage and are in a 19th-century social system.
