well most of the castles are Norman because after 1066 they built all the castles , i am an Anglo / Australian from Worthing Sussex , if you want to see an Anglo Saxon church over 1000 years old there is one at Sompting , north Worthing , you will see their arches are like Roman arches , the Norman arches go to a point at the top.

Richard, I have just watched this for the second time, as living in Small Dole I am like a sponge with local history, I want to give you another thumbs up but can't as it takes another thumbs up away, it's March 2021 and I and going on a quest to find this Edburton Castle, on Friday. We are now getting very near the end of our 3rd lock down. I think it's nearly coffee on a bench time.

Love it! Another great walk & talk. Thanks for the history! Interesting it was only 4 miles from Bramber Castle. Strange they would have them so close, but guess they wanted to drive a point home to those Saxons!

I think because this was an important route they erected the tower. Probably to extract taxes.

Fantastic! I'd forgotten that I'd watched this one - although as I had 'liked' it, I evidently had. Two-and-a-half years later, it stands up well with your current Quest for England walks.

Fabulous walk - I can tell it must have been freezing. I can imagine that the castle would have been seen for miles and would intimidate the locals.

Yes - I reckon these castles would have easily brought the Saxons to their knees

Interesting! I took my drone out for a look at this motte-and-bailey, but I did it from the outskirts of Edburton village right off the road. That was last year (2018). Flying up the escarpment was not as exhausting as walking up it!

Forcing the locals to build that would have left them exhausted. Good rebellion prevention.

That was indeed a very interesting walk you did today even though I was expecting to see a castle and I was a little disappointed I did not see a castle. Still I am sure that we will see another castle shortly in one of your walks.

There are many castle sites in England, though many have gone. But it is interesting to see where there once were. I will visit more extant castles probably next year.

What is the meaning of the word :'downs":?
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 5 жыл бұрын
The south downs or north for that matter are a range of chalk hills. Shortened from Downland I believe.

From Old English "dun" - a rounded height, hill, moor," from Proto-Germanic dunaz , itself possibly a loan-word from "Celtic languages" before the traditional Anglo-Saxon migrations into Britain (note: it's now argued that there may have been a kind of proto-english spoken in S/E England in pre-Roman times). The general meaning "elevated rolling grassland; high, rolling region not covered by forest" is from c. 1400. Specifically the man-made pastureland areas of south and southeast England (the Downs) by mid-15c.
