Dr Olivia Ahn discusses the current approach to sustainability that often forces consumers to compromise on product performance, cost or convenience. Corporates have found that with the growing market demand for sustainable alternatives, they are made to compromise on margins and product features.
How can we change our approach to sustainability to ensure that we provide consumers and corporations with sustainable alternatives that do not force us to a false choice? Olivia is the co-founder of Planera - a femcare start-up with the market’s first flushable sanitary pads. Having founded Planera in her final year of medical school, Olivia went full-time into business after completing her medical foundation training in 2019.
As a strong public speaker and passionate about the impact of sustainability on consumers and businesses, Olivia has spoken at the World Economic Forum, London’s City Hall as the Mayor’s Entrepreneur, taught business students and entrepreneurs at universities, as well as speaking about Planera to media and press. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Excellent presentation. It's a battle between convenience and responsibility and it will have to get even worse before responsibility is taken seriously.

Under our current economic systems in place “sustainability” is just a fallacy. We cannot hope to sustain our planet under the current global capitalist system. No amount of making consumers pay more will fix this. En masse corporations and the most wealthy individuals are the largest polluters. Sustainability should not be a “compromise” it should be a given if we hope to have any future in which our existence is not dystopian (a person can dream right 😅)

Dr. Ahn, how viable is pyrolysis as an answer to keeping plastic out of landfills?
@melusine826
@melusine826 3 жыл бұрын
Going off the zero waste heriarchy, "waste to energy" or pyrolysis is below recycling. And to invest in the infrastructure required make a viable W2E market often locks in a REQUIREMENT for a specific volume of waste.... which can create a conflict and perverse incentive to avoid total reduction of plastic waste in the future. It's a tricky one
@philandeswilliams1975
@philandeswilliams1975 3 жыл бұрын
@@melusine826 keeping it out of the ocean and landfills takes priority and the savings from the use of fuel produced in the process along with possible tax breaks might make it break even. If you could just break even, municipalities can pile on and help scale the industry to profitability.

Simple solution... I rather use cloth. More breathable, less irritable, more comfort, less resource consumption, less guilt. Ofcourse, susceptible to stains, but I dress appropriately, will have some practical problems too. But it's ok for the satisfaction you get for not feeling guilt. Cloth pads are more practical. Don't think that this is unhygienic. Afterall menstrual health is not related to menstrual hygiene. For more clarity on this watch the Ted Talk by Sinu Joseph

I truly believe it is! A small bottled water company made completely plant based water bottles, and their water was less costly than other bottled water. They were quickly bought out by Pepsi who added a small amount of the plant based material in their bottles for a short time, and quickly went back to petroleum based bottles! It can be done!

Lady, corporations decide what to produce, not the other way around. I believe that corporations should pay for any and all cleanup of the mess they created. Manufacturers should never be allowed to make anything that is not sustainable. There's even big business in their f-ups hence the dollar and discount stores. We knew there was a problem 30 years ago. These corporations were all allowed to make anything and everything they want to - junk that breaks the minute someone has it. Design ideas that would never be functional. It upsets me when I ever have to buy something again. Everything should ALWAYS be built to last! YES, Corporations own the MESS!!!! American machines, cars, appliances were secretly created $h;tty on purpose to give the repair guys jobs. What happened? Toyota EXPLODED when they came to America - these cars still outlast most others!

Many humans will push it to the limit and beyond limits while the rest will simply just follow them as such herds do. Remove the leaders who refuse to change for the better so that the better humans can lead and the rest of the herd will change for the better.

Not too keen on the posh accent and, unfortunately, I had to finally turn it off. I was interested in the subject matter and I love your race ‘s image but the Oxford voice is off putting. The problem lies with me and my negative experiences in state schools. Most of the pedagogues spoke similarly when shouting, slapping, and strapping me from the age of five to sixteen. I left their establishments unlettered and crushed with zero confidence in myself. Every time I hear an educated voice it evokes the memories of that period and I, though have moved on somewhat, sink a little and feel cheated and let down badly by the education system. They abused me and resent the fact they got off with it. Best wishes!
